' exactdescription. yvill enable` others lo 1t appertalns to make and use it more particularly ielates to tence 'Wire 4and post conneetions. l
object of this inventioiil is to'provide an' improved form of metallic fence post having a plraiity of numbered or athen wise desi ated wire receivine notches and a quick detachable ivire clamping ciegas` Another object is to provide a pc this character which vis simple ci' construe; tion, and consequently comparatively ecc nomical of manufacture.
Another object is to provide "for quickly disconnecting the Wires from a'numher ci 25 the posts, and then pressing and holding said wires down suiciently near the ground to be driven over by an ordinary conveyence', f
l Othery objects and advantages may he re-v cited hereinafter and in the claim. 1
In the .accompanying drawings, which supplement this specification,
an elevationrview of the pest as viewed from a side of the fence,'the wires ot said -fence being locked in place. Fig. 2 is a View `'of the post in the longitudinal direction of the fence,'before the'wires are applied. Fig.y 3 is an enlarged fragmental perspective view of 'a slightly modified form of the in I 40 vention. Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal l -sectional view immediately above one ci the wires, and, Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the pointed lower end of the post,
Referring to the drawings, in which simi lar reference characters correspond to similar parts throughout the several views, the
' main body 6 is provided with pairs ci oppositely disposed angular Wings 7, each pair being at right 'angles to the other pair, so
that the vertical surfaces thereoconverge to ,mrd the point of the body 6 and have their apices united and extended. so as to form a sharp point 8. It Will be seen, therefore, that the post may 'easily be driven into the ground, and that the horizontal top sur- A faces 9 ofthe wings constitute anchoring Specification cf Letters Patent.

means ifoivpreventing easy removal of the post.
, A. securing-har i@ is formed, irony. reistively heavy sheet metal, into the shape ci? a channel-bar, or is ti-shaped in cross sec tion. Thedistance between the sides of the channel-bar or securing-bar i() is slightly greater than the thickness ofl the bodyl 6, so that the latter may he inserted between said sides. Formed on the lower end of the se curing-csr is a pair of il, which are peri-'crateri 'fer 'the reception of a pivot 12, which extends ti'irengh an aperture (not shcivn; in the post G. rihe pivot iii may he ci any suitable character, hut in the'present. instance comprises a spiit .rey er cotter. The medial and upper peet-ions et the har l() are prcvided with. aperti-tired ears i3 and it; respectively, Whilethe hody t5 is provided with apertures 'isdapted to register with thc apertures through the ears 13 and lli, for the reception of cctters i6 or other snitaiole means for securing the members ti and l0 in norniai position, wherein the wires 17' are tightly cismpcd between the members 6 and if); each wire being3 of the notches 18 and one of the corresponding notches i9, as shown in Figs. Li, 5 and | ihe notches 18 and 19 may he spaced apart any suitable distance, preferably one inch or iess, so that a lai-ge number of vvires, or a small number cr any intermediate number 'he held thereby, and may he spaced. apart tc 'a greater or less extent, to suit the requirement.
in order that the Wires may he quickly placed. in position Without danger oir mistake, in placing the Wires in the Wrong notches, may provide each post with a series of index characters of any proper kind, to distinguish. each notch i8 from the other notches, so that, after posts have been set, the; desired number oif wires may he stretched in lcontiguity therewith, having their ends secured by any usual menos; and then, the 'fence maker may quickly piace the Wires in their respective notches, using the index characters, as indicated by numerals 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 in Fig-- 3, odesignate the particular notch into which each Wire is to 1oe placed. Forexample, the tap wire would be placed in the .notches opposite the numeral 5, in ali of the posts.A While the next wire may he placed in the notch, opposite the numeral 9, and there't'ore, hy ffius placing each of the wires with proper relation to Patented Qian, Zigi@ eci seated Within one r 'tive places.
4or inclosure from some point other than the such purpose,
gate which is provided for especially in grazing districts, where large areas of land are inclosed 'by a fence, and heretofore this has been accomplished by drawing thesecurng staples from a number of the posts and then forcing'the wires down vto the ground and stapling them to adjacent posts, so that a vehicle may be driven over the wires between these adjacent posts.
Then, the wires are released from this lowered position and re-stapled in their respec- Under similar circumstances,
' when' myimproved fence posts are employed, it -is only necessary to remove the cottersl from a number of the posts, so that the wires v`may be raised over or beyond lthe top of the member 10, of two adjacent posts, and these wires are then forced down to the ground, whereupon the member 10 is lowered thereover, so as to constitute a lever for retaining thel wires inthei-r lowered position until the vehicle has passed thereover whereupon, the wires are again forced beyond the end of the members 10 and placed in their respective notches, and the securing-bar 10 is then raised and secured in position for clamping the wires, as previonsly described.
It will be seen that I have provided a fence post which is especially'convenient in the construction of fences, and in the subsequent manipulation thereof; and I have also fully capable of attaining the foregoing objects in a thoroughlypractical and etlicient manner.
I do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and described, but my invention may only be limited by a reasonable interpretation of the claim. 1 I claim: y A fence post comprising; a body member having a plurality of V-.shaped notches cutx into one face' and a lurality of apertures cut through the medial line of said body5. member and running parallel to sai l notches, indicating means upon a neighborlg;` ing face to the notched face, said indicating I means indicating a specic notch, a se-`l curing-bar of channeled formation, said securing bar having a plurality of V-shaped notches on the channel sides adapted to register with the notches in the body mem-v` ber and havingr a plurality of parallel spaced ears having apertures near the ends thereof adapted to register with the apertures in the body member in such manner as to register 70 the notches in the securing bar-with the notches in the body member, with the body of the securing-bar exterior thereto, andv means to pivot and lock said securing bar -to the body member sothat fence wire can be either clamped therebetween at an indicated point or retained temporarily below the securing-bar. y In testimony .whereof I have signed my' name to this specificationin the presence of So l two subscribing witnesses:
