To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lnomn ALANCHIKOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following'is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a lock having a shackle pivoted and longitudinally movable in the lock casing for controlling the movement of a latch bolt.
Another object is the provision of a lock embodying means for locking the latch bolt against operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a sectional view through a lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a view similar to Fig. 1, partly broken away, showing the locking pawl withdrawn and the shackle released. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view similar to Fig. 1, showing the shackle in open position. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a lock casing of the usual or any preferred construction through the side walls of which is secured a pivot pin 6 nearly adjacent an opening formed in one corner thereof for the reception of the pivot end of the shackle The opposite end of the shackle 7 is formed with a notch 8 adapted to receive the tooth 9 of a latch bolt 10 to lock the shackle in closed position, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The pivoted end of the shackle 7 is formed with a longitudinally extending slot or opening 10 receiving the pin 6 and permitting pivotal and longitudinal sliding movement of said shackle on said pin. The latch bolt 10 is formed in one side face with a longitudinally extending recess 11 receiving an integral stud or rib 13 formed on the inner face of one of the side walls of the casing 5 for guiding the movement of said latch bolt. The tooth 9 is normally retained within the recess 8 or in extended position by Specification of Letters Patent.

the tension of a spring 1 1-, having one end engaged within a recess 15 formed in the upper side of the latch bolt and the opposite end engaged against one of the end walls of the casing 5. The medial portion of the spring 14 contacts with a pin 16 secured between the side walls of the casing. The latch bolt 10 is formed centrally in one end with a recess 17 forming a pair of bifurcations in which is secured a pivot pin 18 working within a slot 19 formed longitudinally in one arm 20 of an angular lever, the other arm 21 of which is engaged against the inner end of the shackle 7. The lever is pivoted in the casing 5 on a pivotal pin 22. The pivoted end of the shackle 7 is formed with a laterally projecting arm 28 engaged with a spring 2 1 normally tending to move the notched end of the shackle from within the casing 5.
A partition 25 is provided within the casing 5 and is formed with a plurality of apertures slidably receiving the plungers 26 also movable through the bottom wall of the casing 5 and provided eXteriorly of the latter with heads 27. The plungers 26 are provided with collars 28 constituting an abutment for one end of the springs 29 engaged at their opposite ends against the partition 25 and normally retaining the plungers 26 in extended position. One of the plungers 26 is extended a distance inwardly within the casing 5 and pivotally connected at 80 with one end of a lever 31 pivoted at 32 in the casing and having pivotal connection at its opposite end with a locking pawl 33 slidable longitudinally within the guide 34 provided in the casing. The free end of the locking pawl 38 is adapted to seat within a recess formed in the under side of the latch bolt 10, and is normally retained seated in said recess by the tension of the spring 29.
- In use, the shackle 7 is normally retained in open position by the tension of the spring 2 1, and is locked in the usual manner by depressing or moving the notched end thereof inwardly, the latch bolt 10 automatically locking within the notch 8. To release or open the latch the long plunger 26 is moved inwardly by depressing its head 27, rocking the lever 31 and withdrawing the locking pawl 33 from the recess 35 in the latch bolt 10. The pivoted end of the shackle 7 is subsequently moved inwardly, rocking the arms 20 and 21 of the angular lever and withdrawing the latch bolt 10 and tooth 9 thereof from the notch 8 of the shank 7, permitting the latter to open under the influence of the sprin 24.
What I claim is:
1. A look comprising a casing, a shackle pivotally mounted in said casing, a latch bolt for locking the free end of said shackle, operating means for said latch bolt controlled by the pivoted end of said shackle, and means for locking said latch bolt against operation.
2. A lock comprising a casing, a shackle pivotally and longitudinally movable in said casing and having a notch in the free end thereof, a latch bolt in said casing adapted to be received within said notch, and operating means pivotally connected at one end With said latch bolt and removably engaged against the pivoted end of said shackle. I
3. A lock comprising a casing, a shackle pivotally and longitudinally movably secured in said casing, a latch bolt for locking the free end of said shackle, operating means pivotally connected at one end with the latch bolt and movably engaged at the opposite end with the pivoted end of said shackle, and means for locking said latch bolt against operation.
4:. A look comprising a casing, a shackle pivotally mounted in said casing, a latch bolt for locking the free end of said shackle, operating means pivotally connected at one end with said latch bolt and pivotally engaged at the opposite end with the pivoted end of said shackle, and means for locking said latch bolt member against operation including a spring actuated plunger extending exteriorly of said casing.
5. A lock comprising a casing, a shackle pivotally and longitudinally movable in said casing, a latch bolt for locking the free end of said shackle, and having a longitudi nal recess, a guide lug mounted upon the side Wall of said casing engaged within said recess, a latch bolt operating lever pivotally connected at one end With said latch bolt and engaged at the opposite end against the pivoted end of said shackle.
6. A lock comprising acasing, a shackle pivotally and longitudinally movable in said casing, a latch bolt for locking the free end of said shackle, an angular lever pivoted in said casing having pivotal connection at one end with said latch bolt and movably engaged at theopposite end with the pivoted end of said shackle, a seat in the under face of said latch bolt, a locking pawl, means for normally retaining said locking pawl in engagement-with said seat and operating means for said locking pawl extending exteriorly of said casing;
