AUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK SOLEY, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MILLER LOCK C0., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18,1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK SOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in-Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in padlocks of the type in which a movable stump is used, which is arranged to aline with the slots in the tumblers.
In the previous construction of locks the stumps were carried by a lever pivoted on the same post as the tumblers and in this type of lock in the event of a wrong key being inserted therein the tumblers were liable to force the stump out of alinement, thus destroying the usefulness of the lock. By my present invention, however, the stump is mounted on an independent sliding plate supported by the casing so as to insure its resisting any pressure of the tumblers to force it out of alinement, the stump being actuated by a pivoted lever controlled by the key.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1, is an enlarged side view of a padlock illustrating my improvement; Fig. 2, is a sectional plan view on the line 0 0, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a sectional plan view on the line --b, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, is a perspective View of the stump carrier; Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the lever for actuating thestump carrier; Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the bolt; Fig. 7, is a perspective view of one of the tum-blers; and Fig. 8, is a perspective view of the locking dog which engages the shackle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is..the rear..
casing of the lock and 2 is the front casing secured together by rivets in the ordinary manner.
3 is the shackle pivoted at 4 and having a nose with a single notch 5 therein.
6 is the key post; the front section of the casing having a slot through which the key is passed.
7 is the locking dog mounted on a post and having a notched end 9 forming a hook 10 which enters the notch 5 in the end of the shackle 3. At the heel end of the shackle is a projection 11 which travels in close contact with the rear surface 12 of the locking dog; holding it in its open position. When the lock is closed, as in Fig. l, the end of the dog prevents the movement of the `.shackle so that the shackle is held at the geel, as well as at the nose, by the locking 13 is a spring mounted on the post 8 8 and bearing against the projection on the heel of the shackle and against 'the locking dog, acting as a spring to open the shackle, as well as to throw the dog.
14 is a slide carrying the stump 15, Fig. 4. This sliding carrier rests directly against the straight wall of the casing and is held therein by a post 16 and limited in its downward movement by a post 17. It is prevented from moving forward away from the surface of the casing at the lower end by the lever 18, Fig. 5, which is pivoted at 19, Fig. 3, to a post on a casing. This lever has a -projecting portion 20, which rests between the stump 15 and a lug 21 on the slide 14, so that upon the movement of this lever 18 the stump carrier will be positively moved in either direction. A spring 22 is secured to the heel of the lever 18 and rests against the projection onv the casing, tending to normally hold the' stump carrier against the stop 17 on the casing. The under side of the lever 18 is so formed that when the key is turned on its post 6, it will lift the lever 18 and the stump 15 the distance required.
Mounted in front of the lever 18 is a sliding bolt 23 carrying tumblers 30. The bolt and the tumblers are notched at the ends to receive the stump 15. There may be asmany notches as desired and these notches may be located at any point at the end of the bolt and tumblers. In the present instance the lock is designed as a master key..lock and there are two notches in each element.
The sliding bolt is shaped to be actuated by a key and is guided by projections on the casing of the lock so as to have a transverse sliding motion. A spring 24, mounted on a post 25, tends to hold the bolt in the retracted position. The bolt 23 is notched at 26 and 27 to aline with the stump 15, according to which of two keys is inserted in the lock, as the two keys may be cut differently and both used to open the lock. One may be used as a master key common to all of a series of locks, while the other may be used as an individual key. On the bolt is a pivot post 28 on which the tumblers 30 are pivotally mounted. There is also on the bolt a projection 29 against which rest the tumbler springs 31;.. .[`he. lowersurface of. each tumbler is shaped so .alinement with the stump according to the type of key used.
It will be seen by the above construction that while the stump is actuated by the key' so as to bring it in line with either the upper or the lower set of notches in the tumblers and in the bolt, it is not carried by the lever 18, but is merely actuated by it and can be made very heavy and is rigidly supported by Vthe casing of the lock. rIhis makes an exceedingly substantial lock and one not liable to suffer injury by the insertion of the wrong key therein. v While my invention is particularly adapted to a padlock using a sliding bolt and tumblers and a stump, it may be used in connection with other types of lock where the same combination is found without departing from the essential features of the invention.
lVhile I have shown the tumblers and the sliding bolt each having two notches, it will be understoo-d that the invention can be applied to a lock in which the bolt and the tumblers may each have a single notch or may have three or more notches, as desired, and, in so-me instances, the notch or'notches may be only in the tumblers. By shifting the stump and changing the location of the notches, numerous combinations can be made.
` I claim:
l. The combination in a lock, of a casing; a bolt and a tumbler, one of said elements having a notch; with an independent sliding stump carrier; and a lever pivoted to the casing and arranged to actuate the sliding stump carrier and to be actuated by the key.
2. The combination in a lock, of a casing;
a notched bolt and notched tumblers carriedby the bolt; with an independent stump carrier; and a lever pivoted .to the casing and arranged to actuate the stump carrier and to be actuated by the insertion of the proper key into the lock.
3. The combination in a padlock, of a casing; a pivoted shackle; a locking dog arranged to engage the shackle; a bolt arranged transversely in the casing; and a series of tumblers pivotally mounted on the bolt; said bolt and tumblers having notches; a stump carrier arranged to slide on the casing at the end of the bolt and tumblcrs, and arranged to be brought into alinement with the notches above mentioned; with a lever pivoted to the casing and having a projection engaging the stump carrier and arranged to be actuated by the key of the lock.
4. The combination in a lock, of a casing; a bolt arranged to slide transversely in the casing; tumblers carried by the bolt; the tumblers and bolt having notches at their ends; with an independent stump carrier adapted to slide at right angles to the movement of the bolt and against the casing and having a stump projecting toward the bolt and arranged to aline with the notches; with a spring-pressed lever pivoted to the casing and having a projecting end located between the stump and the lug on the sliding stump carrier so that on the movement of the lever by the key, the stump carrier will be shifted so as to be brought into alinement with the notches.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK SOLEY.
