This invention re1ates to a combined lock and alarm and is more particularly an improvement upon the structure disclosed in Patent No. 990,915,'issued to me on May 2, 1911. f
In my patented structure herein referred to, the steering wheel is mounted upon'a shaft or pillar adapted to be swung upwardly out of active position,'means being provided wherebythe' said pillar can be locked in elevated position. A. combination lock. is utilized and an alarm is provided whereby tampering with the lock by unauthorized persons will result in the sounding ofthe alarm.- I
One of the objects of the present invention is to. provide an improvement in the combination or permutation lockto be used in connection with the steering post whereby the structure is greatly simplified and can be more accurately brought to the graduations of the predetermined combination thanheretofore. p

Withtheforegoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made with- .in the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Each of the ears 10 and 11 has a rectangular socket 19 in its inner end which. is normally out of register with the opening 5 and sleeve 6 as clearly indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. When, however, the plate 12 and section 16 are swung outwardly these sockets will be moved into register with the open ng 5 so as to permit the sleeve 6 to be shifted longitudinally into either of the sockets and thus lock the plate 12 in raised position relatively to the plate 2. Th upward movement of plate 12 and section lfi canbe stopped as soon as the sockets are brought into register with openings 5, by
providing stop screws 20. These screws are arranged in the side wings 12 of plate 12 of the plate 2 and when the plate 12 is swung upwardly the heads of. screws 20 enter the grooves and come against the end walls of the grooves. The ears 10 and 11 are both provided with sockets 21 and 22, respectively, in their outer ends, the socket 21 being closed by means of a screw cap 23 while another screw cap 24: having a central opening 25 constitutes the closure for the socket 22.
Lugs 26 and 27 extend radially from the pivot pin or bolt 9 and are spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the lengthof sleeve 6. It will be apparent, therefore, that the bolt 9 is capable of a sliding movement in the direction of its length before one of the lugs is brought into contact with the sleeve. One end of the bolt 9 is reduced and A sleeve 30'is mounted for rotation in the.

The inner end of sleeve 30'is formed with an annular flange 35'having a peripheral notch 35 A disk 36 is secured'td'and rotates with bolt 9 close to the reduced portion 9 and arranged on one face of this disk is a flange 37 which extends around and lies flush with flange 35. This disk 36 and'fl'ang'e 37 has a notch 39 adapted to move into or out of register with notch "35. A p1ug38 of insulating material is extendedinto the socket 22 and is slightly narrower than the notches 35 and 39. Thus when sleeve 30 is rotated to a predetermined. -pos'ition the notches 35 and 39 willregister and can be slipped over the plug 38. A contact 40 isformed upon plug 38 and is connected to one wire of a circuit including analarm 41 and a source 41 of electricity. The other wire of the circuit is grounded to the machine.
In order that the bolt 9 can be rotated readily, a knob 42 is extended from the outer face of disk 28 and in order that the amount of movement of the bolt inwardly or outwardly relative to the closure 24 can be accurately determined, a graduated strip 43 is secured to the wheel'll and is extended outwardly along lines parallel with the path of movement of the bolt 9 and disk 28.
Undernormal conditions the parts are-p0- sitioned as indicated in the drawings. When theupper section 16 of the steering post is swung upwardly to the limit of its movement thesockets 1-9 are brought into register with the opening 5. Bolt 9 can then beshifted longitudinally by properly manipulating the disk 28 and sleeve 30, so as thus to bring sleeve 6 into one of the sockets 19, thereby locking the section 16 against return movement relative to section 1.. Inorder to shift the-bolt 9 into locking position, it is necessary to rotate sleeve 30 relative to the disk 28 until predetermined graduations 33- andv 34 are brought into register. This brings notch 35' which is forme'd in flange 35 into register with the notch 39 formed in the disk 36. With notch 35 an'd notch 39 thus registering, the 28 and sleeve 3e bearing against the disk and previded with are rotated together until a predetermined graduation is brought into line with the indicatin edge of the blade or strip 43. Thus it can 4 e determined when the notches 35 and 39 are in alinement with the plug 38. The'next adjustment is the inward shifting of the disk 28 and sleeve 30 until the inner face of flange 32 is brought opposite a predetermined graduation on the strip or plate 43. During this movement of the parts the flange 35v and disk 36 will be brought into inner position back of the plug 38 and the bolt 39 will be shifted so as to cause sleeve 6. to be seated within one of the notches 18.

3. The combination with a slidable and revoluble locking member having a reduced threaded end, of a disk fitted on said member close to the reduced end and revoluble with the member, said disk having a peripheral flange extending from one face thereof, there being a notch in the periphery of the disk an intersecting the flan e, a stem engaging the reduced end of 5m locking member and bearing against and revoluble with said disk, a knob at the outer end of the stem and having a graduated periphery, a sleeve revoluble on the stem and having a flange bearing against the disk and provided with a notch movable into register with the notch in the disk, agraduated flange on the sleeve and extending around and upon the knob, an insulation plug adapted to limit the sliding movement of the locking member until said notches in the disk and flange are brought into register and into alinement with the plug, a contact upon one face of the plug, and an alarm electrically connected to a source of energy and to the sleeve and contact.
