To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI L. FUNK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Forming-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for forming sheet metal articles, and relates particularly to a tool designed for forming copes used in dentistry to cover the roots of the teeth in inserting false teeth by means of pivots.
The object of the invention is to provide a tool by means of which sheet metal articles, as for example, dental copes and the like, may be made in the laboratory quickly and economically.
To this end, a-tool of my invention comprises the various features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, in which my invention is fully illustrated, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tool; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Figs. 3 and a are fragmentary views of my improved tool, illustrating the manner of using same for forming copes, the outer member of same being shown in longitudinal section and the inner member in side elevation; Fig. 5 is a plan view, on an enlarged scale, of a blank adapted for forming the cope; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of a finished article.
My improved tool consists of cooperating dies, comprising an inner male die 1 and an outer female die 2, said female die 2 being slotted at its end, and the male die 1 being pivoted in said slots, substantially in the manner of a pair of forceps or pliers. As the dies 1 and 2 are opened and closed, the end of the male die is adapted to pass through the slot in the female die 2, the end of said slot being closed, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the opening in said female die conforming to the shape of the end of the male die 1, and both conforming to the shape of the finished article, sufficient clearance being left between the sides of the male and female dies to receive the metal for forming said cope or other article. Formed in the side of the male die which is adjacent to the female die when said dies are in open position, is a slot 3 which is adapted to receive a sheet metal blank, as
the blank a (Fig. 5) for forming the cope 5 (Fig. 6), or other article, said slot 3 being formed at such an angle that when the front end of said slot is flush with the sides of the female die, the rear end of said slot will be slightly above and outside of said female die, thus progressively drawing the blank into desired form, so as to distribute the work of drawing said blank to form the finished article, and rendering the tool easy to operate. Preferably, also, the relation is such that when said dies are fully closed, the male die will have passed through the female die so that the slot 3 and the formed article held therein will be exposed at the rear side of the female die, thus providing for removing the finished article before retracting said male die.
The manner of operating my improved tool is as follows, particular reference being had to Figs. 3 to 6 of the drawing, in which I have shown the manner of using my improved tool for forming copes for dental use: The blank 4: is inserted into the slot 3 with the jaws substantially in the position shown in Fig. 3, so that it will project symmetrically at the sides of the male die 1. The male and the female dies are then closed, to bring the projecting portions of the blank into contact with the edges of the female die 2, further movement of said male die operating to bend the projecting edges of said die upwardly, as shown in Fig. 4. When said dies are in fully closed position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, the slot 3 and blank 4 are entirely beneath the female die 2, thus providing for removing the shaped blank from said slot before again opening said dies, the shape of said blank, when removed, being substantially as shown in' Fig. 6, in which the finished oops 5 is shown. It will be understood that this particular use of my improved forming tool is illustrative merely, as said tool is adapted for a wide range of application. Neither do I desire to limit myself to the particular construction shown.
With the tool as heretofore described, it is obvious that the side of the blank which is inserted into the slot 3 will be flat, and to provide for bending or drawing down the flat side of said article, in case it is desired to flange same on all sides, I provide a projection 6 at the extreme end of the back of the male die 1, the outer side of said projection being coincident with and conforming in shape to the end of said male die 1.
The cope or other article having been flanged on three sides by means of my improved tool, is removed therefrom, and is placed on the top of the projection 6 with its unfianged side projecting over the outer end thereof, the projecting edge thereof being hammered or pressed down by means of a suitable instrument, as a hammer. Also, if desired, my improved tool may be readily adapted for thus flanging the fiat edge of said cope or other article by merely providing a removable pivot pin for said male die, thus providing for readily detaching said male die and for reversing same to bring the projection 6 thereon into operative relation with the female die 2. Having thus reversed said male die, said cope or other article is placed on said projection 6 with its edge projecting as before, and is forced through the female die, thus Hanging the flat edge thereof in the manner desired. As shown in the drawings, means are provided for thus detaching and reversing said male die, said means consisting merely in providing a pivot pin 7 adapted to be secured in screw-threaded engagement with an opening in a side of the female die 2. To provide for conveniently screwing up and unscrewing said pivot pin, wings 8 are preferably provided on the head end thereof, thus providing for conveniently grasping said screw with the thumb and finger for the purpose of turning the same.

Dies for forming sheet metal articles, comprising a female die provided with a hole which extends through the same and a male die adapted to pass through the opening in said female die, said dies being provided with clearance between their cooperating surfaces, and said male die being provided with a slot adapted to receive and hold a sheet metal blank, substantially as described. 2.
