To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. DRESSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Signal -Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to improvements in signal lamps and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, eflicient and reliable lantern which may be readily adapted to employ either an incandescent electric lamp or an oil lamp as the illuminating agent.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide means for supporting an electric lamp and socket which may be easily inserted into the lantern and then securely fastened in position therein.

Further, said invention has for its object a to provide a signal lantern having a central draft tube with means arranged wholly outside of said tube for supporting an incandescent lamp and socket within the draft tube thereof so as to be entirely free from the walls or sides thereof.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide a signal lantern in which the means for supporting an electric lamp and socket is secured in position within the lantern by means of the cap generally used in lanterns of this type.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide means for securing an incandescent lamp support in position upon a lantern top and maintaining said incandescent lamp and its support duly in position within the draft tube of the lantern.

To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combina tion, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side View, partly broken away, showing one form of signal lantern constructed according to and embodying my said invention; Fig. 2 is a top view thereof with the hinged cap broken to disclose the incandescent lamp support arranged within the draft tube; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken 011 the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the lamp socket and the supporting means therefor.

In said drawings designates a cylindrical lantern casing having a conical top 11 provided with a series of apertures 12 in the side thereof, and a central opening 13 in its top.

14 denotes a conical draft tube provided upon its outer surface adjacent to its upper reduced end with oppositely disposed studs 15, 15 adapted to ride upon segmental inclined planes 16 16 secured upon the upper surface of the top 11 adjacent to the central opening 13 therein whereby the lower or enlarged end of said draft tube 14 will be brought into engagement, by a partial rotation thereof, with a central opening provided in a horizontal perforated plate 17 secured in the upper portion of the lantern casing 10.

Upon the top of the casing 10 is provided a hinged cap 19 having recesses 19 19 in its lower edge, and 20 denotes an incandescent lamp socket disposed centrally within said draft tube 14 adapted to receive an incandescent electric lamp 20 The said socket 20 is secured to the lower end of a tubular stem 21 having its upper end secured to a spider 22 comprising a centrally recessed head 23 having arms 23 23 extending downwardly and outwardly therefrom provided with horizontal portions 24 24 adapted to rest upon the top of said lantern casing 10, and be engaged by the recesses 19 19 provided in the lower edge of the cap 19, and the downwardly extending ends of said portions 24 24 engaging the outer surface of the conical top 11.

At one side of the recessed head 23 is provided a depressed or recessed portion 25 adapted to receive conductors 26, 26 and their inclosing tubular insulating section 27, and upon the side of said tubular stem 21 is secured ablock of insulating, material 28 having binding posts 29, 29 thereon to whichare secured the separated ends of one of said conductors 26 which are connected by a fusible section 29" secured upon the opposite side of said block 28 to the binding posts 29, 29 thereon.

The top 11 is provided at one side adjacent to its edge with upwardly projecting parallel lugs 30, 30 adapted to receive the horizontal end 24. of one of the arms 23 The recess 19 in cap 19 is adapted to receive the conductors 26, 26 and the insulating section 27 surrounding the same, and the recesses 19, 19 are adapted to receive and fit over the horizontal portions 2 1, 24 of the arms 23*, 23 and'hold the same duly in position upon said top 11 when the cap 19 is closed and the spring locking device 31 is engaged by the stud 32 on the outer side of the conical top 11 of the casing.

33 denotes an oil lamp disposed within the lantern casing intermediate suitable guides arranged upon the base thereof.

l V hen the lantern is to be used in connection with the oil lamp, it merely becomes necessary to open the hinged cap 19 and withdraw the electric lamp holder and its support, and then close the cap 19 again. When the lamp is to be illuminated by means of the electric lamp 2O the burner 3st of the oil lamp 33 is first removed therefrom; the cap 19 opened and the spider 22 carrying the socket 20, and lamp 20 then inserted in the draft tube 14: of the lantern, and the horizontal portions 245, 24: of the arms 23 23 permitted to rest upon the top of the lantern. To prevent any rotation of said lamp 20 and its supporting means one of said arms 23* has its horizontal portion 24; disposed intermediate the lugs 30, 30. Here upon the cap 19 is closed and locked, and the recesses 19, 19 thereof caused to fit over and inclose the horizontal portions 24, 2 1 of the arms 23 23*, and hold the same firmly in position upon the top of the casing, and the lamp 20* and its support 20 centrally in position within said draft tube l l and entirely free from the walls or sides thereof.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination of a lantern having a central draft tube in the top thereof and a hinged cap for inclosing the same, with an electric lamp holder arranged within said central draft tube and free therefrom, and a supporting spider secured to said lamp holder and supported upon the top of said lantern and adapted to be engaged by said hinged cap for securing said lamp holder in position, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of a lantern having a central draft tube inthe top thereof and a hinged cap for inclosing the same provided with recesses in its lower edge, with an electric lamp holder arranged within said central draft tube, comprising a stem, a socket secured to the lower end thereof and a plurality of radial arms extending from the upper end of said stem adapted to be supported upon the top of said lantern and engaged by the recesses in said hinged cap for securing said lamp holder in position within said draft tube, substantially as specified.

3. The combination of a lantern having a central draft tube in the top thereof, and a hinged cap for inclosing the same provided with recesses in its lower edge, with an electric lamp holder arranged in said draft tube and free therefrom, comprising a tubular stem, a lamp socket secured to the lower end thereof, and a recessed head secured to the upper end of said stem, and a plurality of arms extending downwardly and outwardly therefrom and adapted to rest upon the top of said lantern and be engaged by the recessed portions of said hinged cap for securing said lamp holder in position within said draft tube, and guides arranged upon the top of said lantern for certain of said arms, substantially as specified.

l. The combination of a lantern having a central draft tube in the top thereof, and a hinged cap for inclosing the same provided with recesses in its lower edge, with an electric lamp holder arranged in said draft tube and free therefrom, comprising a, tubular stem, a lamp socket secured to the lower end thereof, a recessed head secured to the upper head of said stem, a plurality of arms extending downwardly and outwardly therefrom and adapted to rest upon the top of said lantern and be engaged by the recessed portions of said hinged cap for securing said lamp holder in position upon said lantern top and within said draft tube, and means arranged upon said lantern top for holding said lamp holder against rotation upon said lantern top, substantially as specified.
