The stock or body 1 is provided with"a slot 2 extending therethrough from side to side. The lower end of the slot is preferably closed by the bridgeportipn 3', but I do not limit myself to the provision-of this bridge, as the underreamer will operate satisfactorily without such bridge.

The ribs are from one to three and one-half inches wide according to the, size of the underreamer.

The pin or bolt 14, in connection with. the eyes-18 and the abutments 4 and ends. 10, constitutes a pivotal or hinging connection/for the bits. The provision of the abutments 4 and ends 10 relieves the' pin 14 of a very large amount of shock and strainto which it would otherwise be subjected.
On their inner faces the Shanks 11 are pro vided with lugs 15 having concaved lower faces 16.
A pin or member 17 bridges the slot 2 and around this pin is coiled a spring 18 whose bent ends 19 engage the concaved surfaces 16, whereby the tension of the single spring is exerted on both of the lugs 15 and on both maintaining the abutments 8, 9, in contact with the abutments 6, 5, and the abutments 10 in contact with the abutments 4. The pin- 14 is then in the lower ends of the eyes 13.. The parts in their retracted condition above described, are adapted for underreaming.
Each of the bits is provided with a recess 2O for the reception of a hook, by which tle bits may be pulled down against the tenu'sion of the spring, when it is' desired to insert the tool in .the casing.
