-AUTOMOBILE SIGNAL. APPLICATION FILED APRi'll, 1914.

EJ @Rew rea T EQ EDWARD J. BREWSTER, OF HOTISTON, TEXAS.
AUTOMOBILE-SIGNAL.
Application filed April 11, 1914; Serial No. 881,239.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD J. Bnnwsrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Signals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates. generally to signals, and more particularly to one adapted.
for use in connection with an automobile.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which shall be simple of construction, easy to apply to position, and which in operation will be thoroughly effective in notifying pedestrians and others when the chauffeur desires to stop the machine or to turn off from the street on which he is traveling into another street.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists, gen.- erally stated, in a signal comprising a casing designed to be secured to any portion of an automobile, referably tothe left foredoor of the mac ine. Arranged within the casing, which 'will preferably be opaque, is an indicator in the nature of a hand, which is arranged for limited sliding movement within the casin and to which is connected an actuating ro arranged adjacent to the chauffeur, whereby .when it is desired to project the index or indicator to notify pedestrians that the machine is going tostop or to turn off into another street, the index may be projected beyond the casing, and being ofa distinctive color will attract at tention, and thus secure the object for which the device is designed.
To enhance the value of the attachment, the casing may constitute a means for displaying on its front side the number of the machine, and its rear side may have depicted thereon any design that may be desired.
Further and more specific details of construction and features of novelty of the invention will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a.
part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference designate corres onding parts: Figure 1 is a view in side.
e ovation, partly in section, of an automobile signal constructed in accordance with the present invention, the index or signal being Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nee. 22. 1914.
projected; Fig. 2 is a similar view, the signal being retracted; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1..
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a casing, which Will preferably be of rectangular contour in cross section, and may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably of metal, and is provided at its rear end with two outstanding perforated ears 2 by which the casing may be securely bolted to any part of an automobile, proffer-ably to the left fore'door thereof. On one"-lhde of the casing, preferably the front side, may be displayed the-machine number, and on the rear side any design that may be desired. Arranged. Within the casing is an index embodying a hand-or pointer 3 which is connected with a carrier 4: provided at its inner endwith a head 5 designed to coact with stops or lugs ('3 arranged at the forward inner end of the casing, thus to limit the outward movement of the hand or pointer. The latter will preferably be of some distinctive color, such as red, to indicate danger, and may be made of any suitable material, such as metal or wood. As a means for reciprocating the index, which is composed of the head and hand or pointer, within the casing, so asto maintain it wholly concealed therein or projected therefrom, a
so I
of the machine, and provided with a handhold 10. It is to be understood, of course, that the rear end of the casing is open in order to permit of the index being inserted therein.
When the index is housed within the casing, the section 9 of the rod will hang down parallel with the part to which the casing is attached, and will thus prevent any acci dental projection of the hand or pointer, or when it is desired to exhibit the latter,,the section 9 will be raised to bring it in alinement with the section 8, this being effected by the hinge employed, and the push rod is then forced outwardly, thereby projecting the hand or pointer to the desired position, its outward movement being checked by coaction between the head 5 and stops ,6.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that While the device herein described is simple of construction, its parts are so constructed and assembled as'to insure the presentation of a thoroughly efiective device for the purpose for which it is dc signed, and one not liable to become deranged from long continued use.
having thus described my invention, what I claim is: r
In combination with a support, a signal comprising a casing provided at one end with means for attachment to the support and at its other end with internal stops, a carrier arranged Within the casing and provided witha head to coact with the stops,
support, the position of the joint in the rod being protruded beyond the support when the hand or pointer is in'retracted position. In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD J. BREWSTER.
