FENCE POST. APPLICATION FILED Armas, 194,
Patented Dec. 22, 1914 Wm.. n/wflilll Y lli man seras earner nemen.
WAIJPMAR H. SPANIER, OF GRAND HARBOR, NORTH DAKOTA.
FENCE-POST.
,To all whom `it may concern Be it known that I, Varonnae ll. Sic-mina, a` Citizen of the United States, re siding at Grand Harbor, in the county of Ylitamsey and State ot' North Dakota, ha ve invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in `fence posts, and more particularly to metallie fence posts.
An object of this invention is the provision of a metallic tence post which com4 prises a rectangular plate o't' metal, the platel being bent to form a pair of wings, the, wings having improved integral auehoring and bracing means at their lower ends.
A further object of this invention the provision of a metallicl tenceip'ost. whieh is substantially V-shaped in erossA section, whereby to provide a pair ol wings. the post having a plurality ot' transverse slots ftn'med thereih at the juncture ol' the wings to re ceive the line wires of the fence.
lith these and other objects in \ii w. in v invention consists in the novel constrnetnm.y combination, and arrangement ot parts, to be hereinafter `more fully described, claimed. and illustrated in the accompanying dea ing, in which,
Figure. l iS a perspective view ot' my improved fence post, showing the same in a position for use; Fig. Q is a seitioinzl on the line -2 ot' Fig. l; Fig. f5 is an elevational view of the plate forming the l'enee post, before the same is bent into its ang'ular torni; Fig. l is an elevational vie-w ol the lower end ot' the plate. forming the modilied form of my post and showing the same. be't'ore it is bent; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section ot the form shown in Fig. 4 after the same has been bent.
Referring more particularly to the drawing. the numeral lY designates genra'ally the i'enee post which is bent at au angle to torni a pair ol oppositely extendingr wings 2, the fence post being` siibstantnillui7 V-shaped in cross-section. Formed in the post at the juncture ol. the wings. is a pluralitv ot spaced transversely extending-slots il, the slots receiving the line wires 4. and having inclined lower .walls as at 5. The line wires are normally maintained in the inner ends of the slots by reason of the inclination of the lower wa/l'ls, and to secure the line wires Specification of Letters Patent.
at ent ed Dee. 22. 1 914.
Application and April 25, 1914. serial in. 834,504.
in the slots. a locking rod o is moved downwardly within the angle of the post tor engagement with the line wires to maintain the same within the slots. .l substantially V- shaped recess is iormed in the lower end of each of the wings :2. thereby forming a tapered entering member T on the lower end o'l' cath wing, and a tapered angular entering member between the entering members i. 'l`he members T are otl'set to provide horixontally extending portions t), the entering members T being otlset outwardly so that the horizontal portions provide suitable braces to prevent the post from tilting in either direction with relation to the line wires. Mounted on the upper edges of the wings is a Veliaped rap 1U. the eap presenting an enlarged surl'aee to a hammer or other similar tool (not shown) l'or driving the post into the ground. the cap also preventing mutilation ol' the upper edgesv olf the wings by the tool.
ln setting up my improved post for use, a hole is made in the ground, preferably a foot in depth. and the lower end ot' the post is disposed in the hole and hammered downA u-.irdly so that the entering men'ihers 'i' and the angular entering member 8 are 'forced into the lground until the horizontally extending poi tions Sl are engaged with the b ottoni ol' the hole. lhe earth is then packed into the hole so that the horizontally ex-' tending portions il are engaged by the. earth on their upper and lower `t'ace's, and thus provide anchoring members which prevent o.-'eillation ot' the. post in either direetion of the line wires.
lt will be readily understood that a fence post of this construction may be readily used at a corner oll the tence by merely providing inwardly extending flanges (not shown) on the upper edges of the wings to receive the upper ends ol: a pair ot' eorner hraees (not shown). the` line wires engaging` against the outer faces ot' the wings to e \tend around two sides ot' the inclosure.
ln Figs'. Al and 5 of the drawing, I have illustratei'l a slightly modiiied form of the post. in uhh-h the post l at the juncture ot' its wings "l at the lower end of the post is eut away to provide a rounded extension ll on one ot the wings and a tapered ex tension or entering member l2 on the other wing. In this form; the post is inserted into a hole in the ground in the saine manner as the post illustrated in Fig. l, until the horizontally disposed extension l1 en;
gages the bottom* ofthe ho1e,"whereupon the earth is then packed into the hole so that the portion" 1l preyides an anchoring member which preventosciiiation of the ost. t Y Y P Having thus fully described my invention,l what l desire tokclaim and secure by Letters Patent is n A fence post comprising a strip bent at; an angle to form a pair" of oppositely extending wings, the vlower end of each wing 4having an anguiarreeess formed therein iih' rovide u ta )ered awful-ar enterinff meinber therebetween, the portions of the strip 1/5 outwardly of the recesses forming tapered entering members, the last mentioned enteringmembers having their'iower ends offset outwardly to provide horizontal iortions at the juncture of the members wththe body 20 of the strip.
in testimony whereof hereilto--aix my signature in the presence of twoyvitnesses. i
