Description

Patented Sept.l 6, |898.
\ l Hinz IINTTED STATES- FATnNT Trier.
ELIJAI'I IV. I-IILL, OF COVINGTON, OHIO.`
LAND-ANCHOR Fon Pos-rs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,184, dated September 6, 1898.
Application filed .Tune 27, 1898. Serial No. 684,536. (No model.)
following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-` tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object toV provide a simple and effective land-anchor for fence and other posts adapted to be driven into the ground for attaching thereto suitable stays to hold the post in an upright position; and the invention consists in an anchor constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter` described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a portion of a wire-fence, showing the application of my improved lanchor thereto; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the anchor on an enlarged scale Fig. 8, a sectional view.. thereof 5 Fig. 4, a perspective view of the tool used to drive the anchor into the ground.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the usual fence-post, and B the parallel wires connected thereto in the usual manner.
The anchor C is preferably of conical shape, as shown in Figs. 2 and V3, the upper face of theI anchor being concave, as shown at a, to better resist the withdrawal of the same when embedded in the ground.
The anchor is cast with a central stem l), which extends some distance above the concaved or dished portion thereof, and has a hole c, which extends through it in a horizontal direction and joins vertical grooves cl in the stem, which grooves are diametrically opposite each other. At the base of the stem b is a circular mortise e to receive the slotted end of a hollow tool D, which is used to drive the anchor into the ground, the slot f in the tool enabling the same to be passed over the ywire stay E. Any suitable tool maybe used in place of that shown that will effectively serve the purpose. The wire stayE is passed through the hole c and twisted above the end of the stem, as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 2, the wire seating itself in the grooves d to hold the wire from sidewise displacement .and enable it to come flush with theperiphery of the stem, so that it will not interfere with the socketed or hollow end of the tool D, the central stem serving to hold the tool in engagement with the anchor during the'act of driving the anchor in the ground. Oross-ties g maybe used to brace the stays at or near the lower end thereof, as shown in Fig. l.
The anchor may be used in any place where it will be found useful in bracing and supporting any upright object, either with posts used in fencing or for other purposes, or for telegraph or other poles.,
I-Iaving now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A land-anchor provided with a central stem having a hole extending horizontally through it,- and grooves joining thesame to form seats'for the wire stay, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A land-anchor concave at its upper end and provided with a central stem with means for attaching the wire stay thereto, substantially as and forthe purpose described.
3. A land-anchor having a central stem with a mortise around the base thereof, said stem having means for attaching the stay-wire thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. 'A land-anchor having a concavity and a mortise at its upper end, and a central stem having a horizontal hole through it and up vright grooves joining the same, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
