GEORGE W. WEISS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DREss-EORM.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
Application led September 6, 1913. Serial No. 788,385.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, GEORGE W. WEISS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and State .of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Forms, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to dress-forms and 1G particularly to dress-forms of the type emfloor or other support may be regulated to meet the requirements of the user.
It has therefore been one of the objects of qmy present invention to provide a simple and conveniently operated means for fastening the form proper in vertically adjustable position on its supporting standard and for releasing the same whenever desired to permit of any required adjustment.
To such end my invention in one embodiment thereof, comprises the combination of a tubular supporting standard, a form having an attached tube slidably connected with said standard, a latching device mounted within the standard and operative to normally engage one of a vertically arranged series of locking detents in the form tube to fasten the form in adjustable connection with the standard, and controlling means for releasing said latching device to permit of vertical adjustment of the form, said controlling means preferably comprising a lever at the base of the supporting standard operatively connected with the latching device by connections extending through the tubular standard. `These several features of invention, as well as others not yet referred to, will be hereinafter described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating the same, in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of a dressform embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in elevation and section, illustrating the adjustable connection between the supporting standard and the form tube and the latching means therefor. Fig.
3 is an enlarged cross-section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail 1n perspective, illustrating a gage at the lower end of the form and its adjustable connection with the latter. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail illustrating a modied form of latching means between the supportingV standard and the form tube. Fig. 6 is an enlarged section of the upper end of the form tube at its point of connection with the form. Fig. 7 is a detail illustrating a latch-releasing means which embodies a hand-lever for operating the footactuated lever shown in Figs. l and 2.
Similar reference characters designate like parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The dress-form proper, indicated generally by the reference letter f, may be of any desired form or eonstructionthe same as here shown comprising an upper or waist portion 2, of papier-mch or like material, and a lower or skirt portion 3 of wire. This form is provided with a tube 4 extending about centrally therethrough and having a rigid connection therewith, the connection being effected as here shown by means of a fastening-nut 5 engaging a projecting threaded stem 6 of the tube at the top of the form and holding the upper end of the tube against a shoulder 7 within the form, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The form f by means of its connected tube t has a sliding connection with the vertical supporting standard 8 which latter is here shown as mounted on a wheeled base 9. As a means for holding the form in vertically adjusted position on the standard, a suitable latching device is provided which is shown in the present case as comprising a bellcrank l0 pivotally mounted at 1l within the tubular standard 8 and having a pin l2 on its vertical arm projecting laterally throughV Fig. 2.
As a means to release the locking'device, that is, move it to unlocking position, I have provided a controlling means comprising a foot-lever 15 pivoted to the base of the standard at 16 and operatively connected with the horizontal arm of the latching deuser will release the latching device byk merely pressing downward upon the footlever 15, as indicated bythe dotted lines in Fig. 2. In this way the operator may have the use of both hands for raising or .lowering the form if so desired, and When the form has been adjusted to the desired height, the foot-lever will be released and the latching device thereupon automatically returned to locking position under the action of a spring 18, which latter connects at one end with the rod 17 and atl its opposite end with a pin 19 in the standard, as shown in F ig. 5. In some instances it may bey desirable to release the locking device by hand power instead of by foot power, and I provide for this in the present case (see Fig. 7) by pivoting an elbow-lever to the standard base at 46 with one arm 45 suitably arranged l to serve as an operating handle and the other arm 47 arranged to engage the footlever 15, whereby, upon moving the arm 45 in the proper direction, it will cause the arm47 to depress said foot-lever and thereby release the lockingv device in the manner` hercinbefore described.
As a means for raising or lowering the forni when released by the locking device,
the form may be provided with a suitablyv attached handle so arranged as to be conveniently grasped by the operator. Such a handle is shown in F ig. 2, and comprises a U-shaped portion 40 having at one end a collar 41 for rigid attachment with the form-tube 4 and at its opposite end a suitable handle portion 42; the U-shape of the handle being provided to locate the operating or handle end 42 outside of a hanging skirt without interference with the latter.
In order to prevent turning of the form on its standard and so maintaining the locking detents in operative relation to the latching device, the form tube 4 is provided adjacent its lower end with a plate 20 having a straight side engagingone of the sides of the standard S as shown .in Fig. 3, the said standard as here shown being square or rectangularin cross-section.
In effecting the vertical adjustment .of the form on the standard, it may happen that the user will release. hold of the form either by accident or otherwise, in which event it is desirable that the form should be prevented from dropping with sudden impact against the base of the standard and so incurring liability of breakage or' other dam-v age resulting. 'Io prevent such dropping 'of ythe form, I have secured a collar 21 on the lower end of the form tube having a braking device 22 mounted therein which is normally held by a spring 23 in frictional or braking contact withone side of the'standard. 1With this braking device, any dropping or downward ino vement of the form 'on the standard will be so retarded as .to avoidl possibility of any damage resulting. As a further safeguard under thesame circumstances, I have locatedfa coiled spring 24 about the lower end of the` standard which will serve as a spring-buffer to rece/ ive the Contact ofthe form tube in the eventi of its dropping to such point.
It the lower end ofthe form and at the front and rear sides thereof I'have attached a skirt gage and distender comprising segmental or arc- shaped bands 25, 25, here.v
shown as having inserts 26 of cork or similar material to receive pins or like devicesfor fastening the skirt to the form. These gage members in accordance with my invention are each connectedwith the form in a manner to becapable of'both horizontal and vertical adjustment. Themeans for accomplishing this as here shown is' as follows: An arm 27 of each gage member has a horizontally' adjustable connection with the lower arm 28 of an L-shaped bracket on the formv by means of av suitable clamping' device 29 engaging the arm 28 through an elongated slot 30 therein, and the vertical arm 31 of said L-ShapedK bracket has a vertically adjustable connection with a plate-32 on `the form by means of suitable clamping devices 33 engagingl the arm 31 throughl upper end of the latter bymeansfoi the elements 5, 6 and 7. This connection may'in some instances bek sufficient, but in order to obtain a more rigid connection between said parts I preferably providea further, connection between the saine at the lower end of the bust or waist portion 2. This further.
"los
connection, ashere shown, comprises a 'col-1;
. lar 35 on the tube 4 engagingthe under side' of the waist portion 2` asy shown in'Fig. 1,V
the said collar being adjustableon'thetube lto accommodate differentlengthsjof forms*-` by means 4of a fastening screwr 36 carried'by' the collar and'engfagingthe tube within one l of a vertically ar'rangedserie's ofopenings.
