Be itknown that I, JOHN W. Nns'roR, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Hooversville, in. the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new "and useful Improvements in Bench-Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in Vises and more particularly to a vise designed to be operated in connection with a work bench of the ordinary construction, and has for its object the provision of a vise which may be readily'attached' to work benches and which is permitted a wide range of adjustment so that its use for various purposes is readily per mitted.

An important object of my invention is to provide a vise of novel construction which maybe readily attached to a work bench and which is adapted for use in connection with various kinds of work.

Another. important object of my invention is to provide a novel form of slide for one of thejaws of the vise, said slide having its sides provided with a plurality of teeth ar ranged to coactwith teeth on. saidjaw to hold the jaw in adjusted position, said slide being fittedwithin a dove-tail recess in the work bench and havingits side edgesflush with the surface of the bench.

A still further important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described, which is simple as to construction, capable of being readily assembled and disassembled, reliable and eflicient in operation and cheap to manufacture.

The above and additional objects are'accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.

With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device with its parts in assembled position and attached to a work bench, Fig. 2 is a detail fragmentary plan view of the holder or slide for one of the jaws, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the holder or slide, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2,,

Fig.4 is a detail perspective of one of the jaws, and Fig. 5 i-sa perspective View of the other of the jaws showing it attached to the leg of a work bench. Referring to the drawings by characters ofreference the numeral 2 designates as an entirety, a work bench of the usual construction'provided with legs 3.

My improved device comprises avertical adjustable jaw designated 4 as an entirety. This jaw 4 is mounted upon an adjusting screw 5 that is mounted in one of the legs 3 of the bench 2 at a point adjacent to the upper ends of the legs and extends laterally therefrom. The adjusting screw '5 is provided at-its outer end with an enlarged apertured head 6 in which is mounted a handle 7. A wear plate 8 is mounted upon the outer face of the jaw 4 and is bifurcated to receive the screw 5, said head 6 act ing to engage 'thewear plate 8 when the jaw 4 is in the desired position. The adjusting screw 5 is inserted through the jaw 4 at apoint adjacent to the upper end of the jaw and as'means for preventing lateral movement of the j awI provide a guide pin 9 that is inserted through the lower end of the jaw 4 and is 1 loosely mounted within an aperture adj acent'to the lower end of the operate with the other jaw of the vice which will be later described in detail.

I provide an adjustable jaw 11 to cooperate with the jaw'4 that is formed in the nature of a rectangular block and has a flat jaw face 12 and a beveled or chamfered face '13 opposite to the face 12. This jaw 11 is adjustable in a slide designated 14 as'an entirety. The slide 14 consists of a rectangular body plate 15 having upstanding flanges or side walls 16 on its longitudinal edges. The flanges or side walls 16 are provided with inclined outer faces 17 that are designed to coiiperate with a dove-tail recess 18 formed transversely in the bench 2 adjacent to the end thereof which carries the jaw 4. The jaw 11 is fitted in adjusted position by simply sliding or pushing it downwardly in an angular plane toward the extended end of the slide 14. In this connection it will be noted that I- have provided a finger recess 21 in the bevel face 13 ofthe jaw 11. Formed in the side face of the jaw 11 that faces the length of the bench 2 is a longitudinal groove 22 which enables the operator to grip the jaw with his fingers in removing-or positioning it in adjusted position; The face 12 of the jaw is slightly inwardly inclined and provided adjacent to the lower edge with a chamfered or beveled face 23, this enables the use of the vise in connection with round and other work.

It Will be readily seen with reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that I have provided a bench vise which ispermitted to a wide range of adjustment and so constructed as to enable its use in 1 connection with various kinds of work. It will also be noted that my device may be readily attached to benches without requiring much time or laborin the attaching thereof and adjustment of the jaws is permitted in a most reliable and expeditious manner.

In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment is the'most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.

What is claimed is v l. The combination with a; work bench having a flat surface, of a vise attachment for said work bench comprising an adjustable jaw mounted upon the side of said work bench, a second adjustable jaw, a holder for said second adjustable jaw including a body plate having upstanding side walls along its longitudinal edges, teeth formed on the inner faces of said side walls, and. teeth formed on the opposite sides of said second adjustable jaw and suitably inclined whereby a force exerted in one direction against said second movable jaw tends to direct said jaw downwardly against said bodyplate.

2. The combination with, a work bench having a flat surface of ajaw adjustably mounted upon the side of said work bench, a second jaw adjustable with respect to the work bench, a holder for said second jaw mounted transversely of the work bench and comprising a rectangular base plate having upstanding sidewalls on its longitudinal edges, said workbench being provided with a transverse dovetail recess fromedge to edge adjacent to one end, said side walls" having inclined outer faces cooperating with the dovetail recess, said second jaw having teeth upon certain opposed side faces. thereof and disposed angularly with relation to the vertical axis of said jaw and teeth formed on the inner faces of said side walls arranged to cooperate withsaid teeth on the second jaw to hold said second'jawyin' ,ad justed position.
