tongue at the eXtreme front end of the latter and thereby prevent the. tongue f from projecting forwardly of the neck yoke and forming an. obstruction which is likely .to catch the lines.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the front portion of a vehicle tongue provided with a neckl yoke attacher and cap constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view vof the same.
For the purposes of this specification the front portion of a vehicle tongue is indicated at 1. In accordance with my invention I provide an iron or cap 2. which is fitted on the front end ofthe tongue and is secured thereto by means of rivets 3. In the lower side of the cap or iron, at the front end thereof, is formed a substantially V- shaped hook 4 which comprises a vertical front arm 5 and an inclined rear arm 6.1 The. vertical front arm is provided at its upper end with a forwardly projecting lip 7 This lip is at the lower side of the cap. The cap. is provided in its lower side with a longitudinal slot which extends through its front end and in the said slot is tted a longitudinally movable bolt 8. This bolt bears on the lower side of the cap or iron and is provided with slots 9 through which vthe rivets 3 extend, the said slots permitting longitudinal movement of the bolt as will be understood. At the front end of the bolt is a downwardly extending arm 10 atthe lower end of which is a rearwardly extending lip 11. When the bolt is drawn forwardly its arm 10 and lip l1 are spaced from the arm 5 and lip 7 of the hook thereby forming a tortuous space or passage between the front end of the bolt and the hook and which adapts a neckyoke ring placed around the tongue and its cap to be arranged with its lower side between the arms 5 and 6 of the hook. The bolt is then moved rearwardly, thereby closing the `arm 10 of the bolt against the arm 5 of the hook and arranging thev lip 11 under the lip 7 and hence securing the neck yoke ring against casual detachment from thecap or iron. To secure the bolt in closed position the same is provided near its rear end with an opening 12. I also provide a locking pin 13 which passes through and is longitudinally movable in an opening in the iron or cap and in the tongue and thispin4 is engaged with the said opening 12 and is heldin engaged position therewith by means of a spring 14. l
It will be understood from the foregoing that when the neck yoke has been thus attached to the pole it is arranged at the front end thereof so that the pole does not project beyond the neck yoke and hence does not form an obstruction at that point and cannot catch the lines. In order to release the neck yoke it is only necessary to rst withdraw the pin 15 against the tension of the spring 14, then draw the bolt 8 forwardly and then remove the neck yoke ring from the hook.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The herein described neck yoke attacher comprising a cap for application to the front end of a pole, and formed on its under side at its front end with a hook to engage and hold a neck yoke ring, said hook having an arm projecting from one side of said cap,`
a longitudinally movable bolt arranged in a slotin the lower side of the cap and having v an arm to close against saidv arm of the hook,
said bolt having longitudinal slots, and also `having an opening, rivets to secure the cap to the pole and arranged in the slots of the i said bolt and a spring pressed pin to engage the opening of the bolt and' lock the latter in closed position.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. BOWMAN.
