'APPLIOATION FILED AUG. 8, 1913.

UNITED STATES HERBERT WILLIAM DEVALL, OEEXUm, BAHAMAISLAHDS.
TOY.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, HERBERT WILLIAM DEVALL, a citizen of Stafford, in England,
residing at Exuma, Nassau, Bahama Islands, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys,- of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys; and it has for its object the provision-of an interesting and amusing device of this character which may be made in the form of a grotesque figure wherein will be mounted to revolve differently colored disks or wheels, which may be arranged in the head of the figure and which while in movement, will serve to transmit movements to the eyes of the figure or to like elements or objects thereof wherek by to act in conjunction with the wheels and increase the attractiveness of the device.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 2, which may be highly colored or provided with any obvious ornamentation. The head 1 has journaled therein a shaft 3 whose ends are extended exteriorly of the sides of the head and provided with disks or wheels 4 having heavy rims 5 and substantiall sector body portions 6 which may be di erently colored whereby to present various attractive designs as the Wheels are revolved. An operating cord 7 is secured at one end to the shaft 3, and as illustrated the cord is wound around the shaft and then extended downwardly through the device and through an opening 8 in the mouth of the figure, the
free terminal of the cord having a manipulating-ring which may be grasped by the hand and pulled so as to impart rotary motions to the shaft. Incident to the fact that the wheels 4 are provided with rela-' tively heavy weight like rims 5, it is evident that under the momentum of the wheels, the shaft 3 will operate to rewind the cord when the latter is drawnto the full extent of its movement.
' Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 8, 1918i Serial No. 788,789.
The head 1 is provided with eye openings "9, behind which are arranged eyes 10 havingj'pupil representing portions 11 arranged at intervals relatively and adapted to be presented to the openings 9. The eyes are mounted on. shafts 12, as shown in Fig. 2,
thelatter finding bearings in the opposite sidewalls ofthe head. Said shaft is provided with a fixed friction disk 13, which is disposed in the path of'a co-acting friction surface 14. on a fixed arm which radiates from thesha'ft12. In this manner it is evident that as the shaft 3 is revolved to operate the colored wheel 4 the relativelyshort surface 14: of the arm 15 will be advanced against the co-acting friction surface of the disk 13 to cause th shaft 12 to be revolved. In view thereof the wink-like movements which are imparted to the eyes will combine with the purpose of the colored disks 6 and render the article extremely comical, amusing. and interesting. i
The hat 16 is provided with a crown 17 having a sound opening 18. Within the hat may be arranged arevolvinggshaftli) hav ing a bell 20 or like sounding objects there- Patented Dec. 8, 1914'.
on. A pulley 21 on the shaft 19 is connected 7 with a pulley 22 on the shaft 12 through the medium of an endless driving cord 23. T h1s arrangement is desired in that the sounding device operates in unison with the other movable elements of the device.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing's, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood w thout requiring a more extended explanatlon.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A toy comprising a grotesque head having movable eyes, a shaft supporting the eyes, a friction disk mounted-on the shaft, and a revolving operating device having a surface for co-acting engagement with the disk at intervals.
v2. A toy comprising a rotesque head having movable eyes, a soun in device, and a single operating means for e ectmg movements of the eyes and for actuating the sounding device.
3. A toy 7 comprising a grotesque head havin movableeyes, a soiindin' device, and a sing e operating means for e ectin movements of the eyes and. for actuatln' the sounding device and including a revo vin shaft, means for revolving the shaft, an
colored objects carried by: the shaft and located exteriorly of'the head.
4. A toy'comprising a otesqne head hav=-' ing movable eyes, a some ing device, a single operating means for eflecting movements of the eyes and for actuating the sounding device and including a revolving shaft, means for revolving the shaft, and colored objects carried by the shaft. and located exteriorly of the head and provided with weight portions.
5. A toy comprising a grote ue head having its mouth portion provi ed with an opening, a, revolving shaft, an, operating cord having one of its ends secured to the shaft and having its free end passin through the opening,-and weighted colore objects fixed to the shaft exteriorly of the head.
6. A toy comprising a grotesque head, a revolving shaft mounted therein,- movable eyes, va shaft supporting the eyes and provided with a friction disk, a revolving arm having an arcnate co-acting friotionsurface to. engage said friction disk to revolve the latterflt intervals when the arm is revolved, and means for operating the arm.
