DYEING-SPOOL.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed July 18, 1913. Serial No. 779,718.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jonr: G. MAssoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of \Voonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dyeing-Spools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spools for dyeing, and has for its spool with a tubular body and a series of deep grooves with walls of foraminous material between which the goods may be wound or laidin narrow rows or piles whereby the liquor may be either forced or drawn through said wallsand goods to act upon each row independently whereby the passage of the liquor through the goods is greatly facilitated and the dyeing effect ren' dered more uniform. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a jacket or casing of foraminous material adapted to be secured about the loaded spool and to inclose the whole in a suitable receptacle to which means are attached for circulating the liquor through the goods.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1- is a side elevation showing my improved spool mounted in position to have the liquor forced therethrough. Fig. 2 is a detail showing a side elevation of my improved spool. Fig. 3-- illustrates my improved spool in section with the material to be dyed wound into the grooves of the spool and the jacket or casing around the loaded spool. Fig. 4- is a perspective view illustrating the jacket or casing.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the body portion of my improved spool for dyeing textiles. This spool comprises a body portion having a series of deep grooves 11 preferably made in an annular form and the walls 12 of said grooves. are perforated, that is the material of which the body portion is constructed, may be of thin metal perforated or punched full of holes or, the same may be of wire netting or it may be constructed of any suitable foraminous material.
The grooves are preferably of a substanobject to provide such a narrow row of material tially V-shape in cross section, but may be straight if desired, whereby the yarn or other material desired to be dyed may be wound or laid therein between the walls in comparatively thin or narrow rows so that the liquor in being forced from the inner side of the tubular body outward will enter these rows from either side thereof and pass through the goods and dye them evenly.-
The body portion of the spool is provided with heads 13 and ll, either one or both of which may be provided with an outwardly projecting boss 16 each having a central hole therethrough into the interior of the spool which holes are adapted to register with the openings 17 one at the top and one at the bottom of the receptacle 18 so as to receive the liquor from the pump. when forced thereinto.
After the goods have been wound or deposited in the rooves on the spool they are inclosed by a acket, casin or envelop 18 which may also be forms of perforated sheet metal or other foraminous material and may be constructed in any suitable form to inclose the spool. I have shown herewith the same as being hinged at 19 and provided with suitable locking or retaining bolts 20 whereby it ma be readily secured about the loaded spool After the yarn or other goods have been wound upon the spool it is placed in a suitable receptacle 25 the boss 16 being centered in the opening 17 in the base of the receptacle and secured firmly in position by means of the binding screw 21 at the top. A suitable uantity of dyeing liquor is then placed in t e receptacle, the cover secured in position and then by rotating the pump 22 in one direction the liquor is drawn from the receptacle through the pipe 23 and forced back into the center of the spool through the pipe 24 whereby it is caused to pass outward through the perforated walls of the spool and independently, greatly facilitating the dyeing action of the liquor upon the goods as it is thereby permitted to get at and act upon all of the layers and fibers of the goods. \Vhen it is desired the action of this pump may be reversed and the liquor drawn through the center of the spool through the pipe 24 and forced back into the receptacle through the pipe 23, thereby insuring the action of the liquor on the outer layers of the material. The .jacket act upon both sides of each and claims is intended to cover any tubular body adapted to receive, carry and act upon goods in the manner designated.
luy improved apparatus may be used for dyeing, bleaching or any other purpose for which it may be adapted.
claim:
