* TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADJUSTABLE WAGON-REACH.
Application filed April 24, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, CLARENCE P. CHIL- nnnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schuyler, 1n the county of Colfax and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Wagon-Reaches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of adjustable wagon reaches and more particular to that class of reaches which are provided with means for limiting the shortening of the reach so that it cannot be shortened beyond the length of the ordinary wagon.
An object of my invention is to provide a reach of the above character which can be easily adjusted, can be attached to or detached from a vehicle, one which is durable, yet constructed of but a few parts, and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a very small cost.
With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view thereof showing parts in detail. Fig. 3, is a detailed view. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of a locking pin which is used. Fig. 5, is a side elevation of an ordinary king bolt and Fig. 6, is another detailed view.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1, designates the body portion of my invention which is formed in sections as shown and which is tubular in cross section and provided with apertures 3, which when the ears are bent into the form as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are adapted to register so as to receive the king bolts 4, whereby the reach may be connected to the vehicle very easily.
One of the sections of the body portion is provided alternately with slots 6, and openings 7, which are adapted to receive locking pins and bolts respectively. The extension 5, extends into the other of the sec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tions, the slots (5, and openings 7, registering with cut-out portions 8, and apertures 9, which are formed in the same.
A locking band 10, 18 provided which is, as the rest of the device, preferably constructed of sheet metal and provided with the registering openings 11., as shown,whereby when the same is moved into register with one of the cut-out portions 8, and one of the slots 6, the square shank 12, of a lockingpin 13, can be inserted thereto as shown in Fig. 2. The locking pin is provided with an opening 14;, near its lower end for the reception of a cotter pin or the like (not shown). It is readily obvious that when the slidable section is moved upon the section it will abut the end 15, of the other section and lie flush with the outer surface thereof.
I desire to lay the greatest of stress upon the simplicity of my invention and it is thought that the novel features of the same will be appreciated from the foregoing disclosure.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoincd claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2-- 1. A reach for vehicles comprising telescoping seetions provided with longitudinally-extending rectangular slots and circular openings positioned between said slots, and a pin rectangular in cross section passing through a selected set of the slots in said sections, said circular openings being provided to permit a runninggear to be connected with the reach.
2. A reach for vehicles comprising telescoping sections provided with rectangular slots and circular openings positioned for alinement when said sections are longitudinally adjusted, and a pin rectangular in cross section passing through a selected set of said slots.
3. A reach for vehicles comprising a plurality of telescoping sections, one of said sections being provided with an enlarged portion to limit the longitudinal movement of the sections in one direction, the end portions of said sections being provided with tongues brought together and provided with registering openings, said sections being.
provided throughout their lengths with rectangular openings extending longitudinally of the sections and With circular openings positioned between said rectangular openings, the openings of one of said sections registering With the other of said sections When said sections are adjusted longitudinally, a collar surrounding the outer section and provided With rectangular openings registering with the rectangular open- 10 ings of said sections, and a pin having its shank rectangular 1n cross section and passmg through a reglsterlng set of rectangular Copies of this; patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
