To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIENRY Bnounuo, a
citizen of the United States, residing at tle Casings or Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertans to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in coverings or protectors for bottles and the like and the primary object thereof is to provide a metal covering which is constructed in such a manner as to cause it to absorb any shocks and jars and thereby guard the bottle against breakage.
A secondary object is to render the protector readily detachable for the purpose of cleaning the bottle.
A still further object is to provide means for securing the cork of the bottle in position, the fastening means for the cork being merely a continuation of the fastening means for retaining the protector of the bottle.
'With the above objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle showing the application of my invention: Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the opposite side of the bottle; Fig.3 is a side elevation taken at right angles to Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. at is an enlarged elevation of a portion of the covering; and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the protector.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my improved protector as applied to a bottle B, the latter having the usual cork C.
The precise configuration of the protector shown in the drawings need not be strictly followed since the shape of the protector will vary according to the shape of the bottle to which it is to be applied.
My improved protector comprises in general a wire mesh covering 1 which rises from a bottom 2 and is provided on one side with an upright slit 3 along the meeting edges of which are disposed a plurality of fastening elements 4, a similar element 5 being located on the opposite side of the covering at its top and a flexible fastening element or lace (3 being passed around said fastening elements 1 and 5 and over the cork C. r
The mesh covering 1 is preferably formed by a plurality of wires bent to alternately form a number of loops 7 and eyes 8, the eyes of one strand of the wire engaging the loops of the strand directly below it and the loops 9 on the meeting edges of the mesh carrying the fastening elements 1 which are here shown and are preferably in the form of hooks constructed of single pieces of wire bent substantially upon themselves to form the bills of the hooks, their free ends extending laterally and bent into eyes 10 which are passed around the wires forming the loops 9. y
In order to absorb any shocks or jars and prevent breakage of the bottle B, I provide a plurality of resilient coils 11 which are secured at their opposite ends to the meet ing edges of the mesh 1 and have their various convolutions within certain of the loops 7 and the eyes 8. As shown in the drawings, these coils 11 are preferably disposed as follows: One at the top of the covering 1 and surrounding the neck of the bottle B, one near the extreme lower end thereof, one at the point at which the neck of the bottle flares outwardly and is joined to the body thereof and two between said last mentioned coil and the lowermost coil. This positioning, I have found to be most advantageous.
The bottom 2 of the protector is formed of an annular series of wires bent into a plurality of convolutions and having their free ends 12 and 13 brought to a central point and united as shown at 14. It may here be stated that whenever one end 12 of a wire is brought inwardly toward the center another wire 13 is extended outwardly from said center and takes the place of said wire which has been brought in and united as clearly shown in Fig. 5. By bending the wires in this manner I form a continuous resilient cushion 15 which as shown rests beneath the bottom of the bottle and will absorb even more powerful shocks than the coils 11 since a greater number of strands of wire are used in forming the cushion 15 than in forming the coils 11.
The flexible fastening element 6 is secured at its lower end at the point of connection betweenthe ends 12 and 13, said element passing outwardly above the cushion l5 and being then passed around the bills of the hooks 4, over the cork C, around the fastening element 5 and thence back over said cork and is wound a number of times around the uppermost-hooks & as shown at 16.
By constructing the device as above described, it will be readily seen that breakage of the bottle to which it is applied will be rendered practically impossible and that the cork is securely retained in said bottle until the fastening element 6 is released. It will also be clear that the releasing of said element 6 will allow the meeting edges of the mesh 1 to be pulled apart whereupon the entire covering may be removed. This is an important feature since the bottles can be more successfully washed and cleansed when the protector or covering is removed.
It maybe well to here state that the slit 3 is not formed by cutting the strands of wire forming the protector but that said covering is woven in such a manner as to provide a space between its meeting edges which space I have herein termed a slit.
Although I have described my invention applied to a bottle, it will be readily understood that it need not be limited to this use since it is applicable to many forms of receptacles.
Various changes in form, proportion and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new 1s:
1. The combination with a bottle, of a protector comprising a metal. fabric covering provided with a bottom and'being slit from said bottom to its upper end, a plurality of fastening elements projecting from the meeting edges of said fabric covering, a flexible fastening element secured to said bottom and to the uppermost fastening element and having its intermediate portion passed through said fastening elements whereby the meeting edges of said covering are removably secured together around the bottle. The combination with a bottle, of a protector comprising a metal fabric cover- Gopies of this patent may be obtained forfive cents each, by addressing th ing provided with a bottom and being slit from said bottom to its upper end, a plurality of fastening elements projecting from the meeting edges of said fabric covering, a fastening element secured near the upper end of said covering opposite said slit, and a flexible fastening element secured to said bottom and engaged with the fastening elements on both sides of the covering, a portion of said element passing over the cork of said bottle, whereby the meeting edges of said covering and said cork are removably secured in position.
3. The combination with, a bottle, of a metal fabric covering having a bottom and being slit from said bottom to its top, a pluralityof alternately disposed hooks having their shanks secured to the meeting edges of said covering, a hook on the opposite side of said covering from its slit, said hook having its shank secured to said covering, afiexible fastening element secured to said bottom and passed around the bills of the hooks on each side of said covering, a portion of said element passing over the cork of said bottle, whereby said covering and said cork are secured in position.
1-.- A device of the character described, comprising an annular coil of twisted wires having their ends extending radially inward and united at a central point, a metal fabric covering risingfrom said coil and provided with an upright slit on one side, said cover ing beinginterwoven with said coil, a plurality of spaced coils extending around said covering, hooks on the meeting edges of said covering, a hook on the side of the latter opposite its slit and a flexible; fastening element secured at the center of said bottom and adapted to be passed around said hooks and over the cork of a bottle. v
5. A bottle protector comprising a covering formed of a plurality of circular sections designed to surround a bottle, and a plurality of annular coil'springs uniting the free edges of said sections.
