ATTACHMENT OR FORCE-TUBE FOR DRAIN-VALVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Application filed January 5, 1914. Serial No. 810,411.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments or Force- Tubes for Drain-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
- My invention relates to means for rendering self-draining drain valves of the turning plug type self-draining when placed on a vertical pipe, as set forth in my Patent Ser. No. 965,129. As therein indicated, a round tube attached to the drain port is always effective in increasing the velocity of flow of water when the valve is placed on a horizontal pipe; a round force tube is not positive I in producing a flow of water from the valve when it is placed on a vertical pipe for the reason that, under varying pressures, the tube will become empty of water, in which condition the vertical distance between the air vent and drain port becomes zero and hence, the force tending to produce a flow of water also becomes zero, and the valve will not drain the pipes.
The device of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 shows the attachment, or force tube, on a self-draining drain valve, Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the above valve in a plane passing through the vertical axis and perpendicular to the plane of the paper, the attachment being separated somewhat from the valve casing for purposes of illustration, Fig. 3 shows the front face of the force tube, Fig. 4 shows the back face of the tube, Fig. 5 is thegasket between the two faces, and
Fig. 6 shows a modified structure of valve casing.
The drain valve herein referred to, and to which the force tube is specially applicable, consists of a valve casing having tubular eX- tensions for pipe connections; a conical stem, or plug, fitting the inner, smooth face of the casing water-tight; a rectangular or oblong opening 12 in the plug perm1tt1ng water to flow through the valve and con-' drain port 6, as shown; and the casing may also have an opening 180 from the two I the rectangular opening 12 in the plug.
Referring to the force tube attachment, its back face 3 (see Fig. 4) has two openings 5, 6 which register, respectively, with the openings 5, 6 in the valve casing; there are two additional openings 9, 10 in the back face of the tube, for the purpose of securing the parts of the tube together and the tube to the valve; the front face 2 of the tube (see Fig. 3) has an airvent 7 and drain port 8; and two additional openings 9, 10 which register, respectively, with the openings 9', 10 in the back face. These openings receive screws which bind the parts of the tube together and the tube to the valve. A gasket t (see Fig. 5) separates the two faces of the tube. The air vent 7 and drain port 8 have such relative positions that the former is always above the latter in a vertical or a horizontal operative position of the valve.
Instead of making the back plate 3 separate, it may be integral with the valve casing, as shown in Fig. 6. In this case the valve casing is provided with a smooth face 20 to which the gasket 4 and plate 2 are attached.
If desired, a second force tube 11 may be attached to the drain port of the tube, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 ;v a rod properly positioned near the drain port and bent downward'is also efiective, in increasing the velocity of flow of water during drainage.
The self-draining valve of the present invention is somewhat similar in construction and operation to that described and claimed in my application, Serial No. 730,281, filed November 8, 1913.
Having described my claim l. A. self draining valve comprising a valve casing of the turn-plug type provided with lateral drainage and air inlet vents, a draining attachment arranged to communicate with said drainage and air inlet vents, said attachment being further provided with invention I an air inlet vent and a drainage port so arranged that the air vent is above the drainage port in either a horizontal or vertical position of the valve.
2-. A self draining valve comprising a valve casing of the turn-plug type provided with lateral drainage and air inlet vents, and having a lateral face surrounding said vents, a draining attachment attached to said face and communicating with said vents, said attachment being further provided with an air inlet vent and a drainage port so arranged that the air vent is above the drainage port in either a horizontal or a vertical position of the valve.
3. A self draining valve comprising a valve casing of the turn-plug type provided with lateral drainage and air inlet vents, a drainage attachment communicating with said vents and comprising an outer platespaced apart from said vents and provided with outwardly opening air inlet vent and drainage port so arranged that the air inlet vent is above the drainage port in either a vertical or horizontal position of the valve.
4. A self-draining attachment for valves comprising an outer plate provided with an air inlet vent and drainage port so arranged that the air inlet vent is above the drainage port in either a vertical or a horizontal position of the attachment, means for spacing said plate from the side of a valve casing,
and means for fastening said plate to said casing.
5. A self-draining valve comprising a valve casing of the turn-plug type provided with lateral drainage and air inlet vents, a draining attachment arranged to communicate with said drainage and air inlet vents, said attachment being further provided with an air inlet vent and a drainage port so arranged that the air vent is above the drain age port in either a horizontal or vertical position of the valve, and means in said drainage port for promoting the outflow of liquid therethrough.
6. A. self draining valve comprising a valve casing of the turn-plug type provided with lateral drainage and air inlet vents, a draining attachment arranged to communicate with said drainage and air inlet vents, said attachment being further provided with an air inlet vent and a drainage port so ar- "anged that the air vent is above the drainage port when the turn-plug is in a horizontal position on a vertical pipe.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES WALKER.
