WATER-GRATE.
Application filed June 27, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIXFIELD G. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edwards, in the county of Benton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'ater-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to water grates specially adapted for attachment and use in steam boilers having a rectangular firebox or furnace.
The primary object of the invention is to increase the heating capacity of the furnace and thereby reduce the consumption of fuel.
Another object is to provide a series of water tubes arranged within a fire-box or furnace so as to provide a grate therefor, and having connections with the interior of the boiler at different vertical planes therein.
Another object to provide a water grate having connection with a boiler whereby the water in the latter is permitted to flow into the grate and to be quickly heated by the fire thereover and kept in constant circulation.
A further object is to provide a water grate having suitable devices for draining the grate of sediment accumulated therein.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view through an ordinary locomotive boiler showing my improved water grate attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents a transverse sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking downward.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 5 indicates the body of the boiler having the usual water chamber 6 and the depending portion 7 in which is located the fire-box 8 having the doors 9 and 10 therein. The fire-box 8 extends a distance upwardly within the horizontal portion of the boiler 6 and is disposed in spaced relation to the depending port on 7 thereof, thereby permitting water to occupy the space between the fire-box and boiler body on all sides.
The grate 11 consists of a series of hollow grate bars connected at the ends by suitable elbows so as to provide a continuous hollow connection, the free ends of which Specification of Letters Patent.

are. extended through sleeves 12 secured through the walls of the lire box 8 and depending portion of the boiler. The curved ends of the grate bars are supported within the fire-box on suitable ledges 13, and are here shown in the form of angle bars.
The end 14 of the water grate is provided a short distance outwardly of the wall of the depending portion 7 with an elbow and depending hollow connection 15 having at its lower end a, T-joint which is connected, on opposite sides of the pipe 15, with valves 16 and 17. The valve 16 when open, communicates the water grate 11 with the lower portion of the depending part of the boiler, while the other valve 17 is free. The other free end 18 of the water grate is extended upwardly outside of the body of the boiler to a point below the water level therein, thence forwardly to a point adjacent the forward end of the boiler. This end of the pipe is provided with a valve 11) and a nipple 90 which communicates it with the interior of the boiler 5. It will be found that the valve 19 is of the ordinary angle valve type and is provided with an air cock 21.
In ordinary operation, the valves 19 and 16 are open and the valve 17 is closed. thus permitting the water heated in the hollow grate 11 to circulate upwardly from the bottom of the depending portion 7 through the valve 16, pipe 15, grate 11 and pipe 18, thence through the open val e 19 into the forward end of the boiler. IVhen it is desired to drain the grates of all water and accumulations therein. the valves 19 and 16 are closed and the valve 17 opened. The piping being open below the level of the grate 11 and the air port in the valve 19 allows the water in the water grate 11 to quicklv drain.
\Vhile I have herein shown my invention attached to the ordinary locomotive boiler, I wish it to be understood that I may. by slight variations in the construction herein shown. accommodate my invention to various tvpes of boilers.
IVhat I claim is In a device of the character described, a boiler having a depending portion at one end. a fire-box interiorly seated in said depending portion and spaced from the walls thereof, a right-angled flange attached to the inner face of one wall of the fire-box and running the width thereof. a like flange attached to the opposite wall of the fire-box in alinement with the first mentioned flange, a pair of sleeves connecting the Wall of the fire-box and the Wall of the boiler, one sleeve being adjacent one end of the last mentioned flange and the other sleeve being adjacent the opposite end of the last mentioned flange, a hollow water-grate seated upon the upper faces of each of said flanges, one end of the Water-grate passing through the first mentioned sleeve and then depending and the opposite end passing through the second mentioned sleeve and elevating and communicating with the opposite end of the boiler, a cutoff valve having an air port communicating With the last mentioned end of the Water-grate adjacent its entrance to the opposite end of the boiler, a connection communicating with the depending end of the Water-grate and the extreme lower end of the depending portion of the boiler, a cut-oil" valve in said connection between the depending end of the water-grate and the boiler, and a second cut-off valve in said connection opposite said depending end of the Water-grate, said three cut-off valves operating to drain the water-grate or to allow Water to circulate from the depending portion of the boiler, through said Water grate, and back to the opposite end of the boiler, substantially as described.
