The operating lever 3 is fashioned with a handle12 at one end, and at its opposite end A complelever above its forked end, by the pivoted side links 15, and an integral arm 16 of the detent is pivoted at 17 to a slide strap 18 which has apair of sleeves l9 embracing the lever 3 so that the strap is free to slide on the lever. 1 p
The operation of the lifting jack will be apparent from an inspection of the drawand a brief descriptionv will suffice for a clear understanding of the manipulation of the device. The operating lever is manipulated in manner similar to a crow-bar resting on the bosses 9 as a fulcrum, andthe short end of the lever, or the bifurcated end which'straddles the ped- I when the handle end is turned down as in cap "piece;
Fig. 4. lVhen the handle end of the lever is lifted up the short arm of the lever is withdrawn from the studs, but the pivoted detent is, by the same motion, pushed in under. a pair of studs and caused to slide across the top of and in contact with the cap piece 6 of the pedestal. The continued up and down movement of the lever on its fulcrum will alternately lift and hold the post as will be readily seen, the operating lever being a rigid bar, and the pivoted detent being free to move in and out of position between the studs and the top of the When it is desired to lower the jack from raised position, the lever is turned down and at the same time slightly withdrawn in order'that the short arm of the lever mayescape the studs above it and also to permit the detent to be withdrawn from under the studs which are resting upon it. In this manner the post is lowered step by step and the detent acts as an escapement just as may be readily disassociated from the jack when not being used and may be snugly packed away for storage.
