To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FERNANDO BIANCHI Y Rnenn, a subject of the King of Spain, and a resident of Madrid, in the Province of Madrid, Spain, have invented an Improvement in OHice-Desks, ing is a specification.

My present invention relates to an oflice table or writing desk possessing two separate work-1eaves which are conveniently disposed one above the other and united between themselves in such a way, that on drawing forward the lower leaf, the upper one retrocedes, and the invention differs from the known types of tables of this class, because on pulling the lower leaf, thls latter occupies the. original position of the upper leaf, while the latter, on belng pushed toward the back of the table, is simultaneously lifted.

During the .raising and lowerlng movements the lower leaf preserves its horlzontal position, and thus there is no necessity to remove any objects which may have been placed upon either of the leaves, whose movement is perfectly parallel and always in a horizontal direction. This advantage is achieved by connecting the two leaves by means of bell-crank levers, which are placed in pairs one behind the other on the lateral Walls of the writing table andthus form parallel guides.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a writing desk constructed according to this invention, the V ew being lateral and partly in vertical section. Fig 2 represents a section of the upper part of the writing table with the workleaves lifted. Fig. 3 is a front view of the desk on a reduced scale.

The writing, desk, comprises a a frame which is fitted up as regards its lower portion in the ordinary manner with side drawers and possesses two leaves a and .7), which are disposed one above the other on the frame. /Vhen the desk is not in use, or when it is employed closed in the ordinary way, the lower leaf a rests upon the frame top 0 or upon strips put in its place, while the upper leaf rests upon the upper edges of the lateral walls (Z and upon that of the back wall 6 of the desk.

On the lower leaf a and at its rear portion, may be placed compartments or pigeon holes 7 in order to fill up the space between of which the follow- I both leaves. In the front part of the writing table there is a small closure strip 9 below the upper leaf Z), which serves to close the space which occurs in the front part of the table between the leaves a and b. This closure strip 9 which is hinged, can be closed by means of looks or catchesfixed to its upper edge.

In the lateral walls (Z of the writing table, two or more bell-crank levers are placed, being fulerumed by bolts on which they revolve. The short arms it of the bell-crank levers incline downwardly toward the lower leaf a to which they are pivotally connected when the table is closed, while the long arms 2' which in this position extend toward the front of the table, are connected by similar joints with the upper leaf 6.

When it is proposed to utilize both leaves a and b, the closure strip 9 is turned downward (Fig.2). Afterward the leaf a is drawn forward, and in consequence of the movement of the arms it of the bell-crank levers, the same becomes elevated without the necessity of any other operation. At the same time the leaf Z) is moved upwardly and rearwardly by the arms 2'. It is convenient to limit the movement of the leaves by means of stops 7', which arrest the movement of the leaf a. The arrangement of the said stops is suchthat the bell-crank levers can move a little beyond the vertical position, so that the leaves a and Z), without other movement, can be fixed in the position adjusted. By pushing the lower leaf backward, both leaves return to their initial position and since the upper leaf in union with the closure strip 9 closes the space which exists above the leaf a, it is unnecessary to remove papers or documents from the said leaf. One of the bell-crank levers is also provided with a third arm 7:, which has on its free end an adjustable weight L, by which weight the movements of the leaves a and b will be balanced. I

In its remainder the writing desk may be constructed in any form that may be desired. Also both leaves may be moved into the open position by exercising pressure in a backward direction on the upper leaf.

I claim:

In a desk of the character described, the combination of a frame having a rigid top and having its side and rear walls provided with extensions projecting upwardly beyond the stationary top, a lower leaf disposed in the space between the said side and rear Wall extensions and upon the stationary frame top, a closure strip hingedly connected at its lower edge to the front edge of the stationary frame top to swing upwardly and downwardly with respect to the same, said strip extending flush with the upper edges of the side and rear wall extensions in its upper position, an upper leaf adapted to normally rest upon the upper edges of the side and rear wall extensions and the said closure strip, bell-crank levers fulcrumed upon the inner surfaces ofthe side wall extensions and having relatively short depending arms pivotally united at their extremities to the sides of the'l'ower leaf and having elongated arms projecting forwardly and pivota lly united at their extremities to the lower surface of the upper leaf said levers maintaining both leaves in horizontal and parallel positions at all times all for the purpose described.
