SAFETY LOCKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, .ANDREW WILHELM Kosnr and Trroims CAsnY, citizens of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the a county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Safety Locking Devices, of which the following is a specifi cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
adapted for application to scarf pins and the like, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a safety locking de vice which is applied to a scarf pin, whereby to securely lock the pin to a garment after being once engaged therewith.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a safety device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, the figure represents a side elevation of a stick pin illustrating a safety locking device constructed in accordance with our invention, parts thereof being broken away and illustrated in cross section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the pin which is provided at one end with a point 2 and at its other end with an enlarged rounded head portion 3 having an'oifset forming a shoulder at, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. Pivotally mounted upon the head member 3, is a body member 5 which is preferably hollow in cross section and provided with an extension forming perforate ears 6 between which is pivotally mounted a catch member 7,the inner end of which is adapted to normally engage with a shoulder 4 to retain the body member 5 in its effective position. The catch member 7 is yieldably retained in anormally locked position byineans of. a spring member 8, one end of which is arranged within a recess 9 formed in the interior of the body 5, while the other end thereof is engaged with a recess formed in one face of the. catch member 7.
, The body 1 of the pin is provided with a transverse opening 10, .at a point removed from the head 3 in which the pointed end 11 of the arm 12 is adapted to be arranged. The end 11 of the arm 12 is preferably disposed at right angles to the arm and formed at the junction of the end 11 and the arm 12, is a gem-receiving pocket 13, whereby any character of gem may be set therein. The inner end of the arm 12 is integrally formed with the forward end of the body 5 and is adapted to move therewith. r
In the figure, we have illustrated the safety locking device in its efiective position, the catch member 7 being engaged with the shoulder at to prevent the body 5 from swinging outwardly and disengaging the end 11 of the arm 12 from the opening 10. It will be noted that in placing the pin in position, the body member 1 is first inserted within the material and the arm 12 is then swung inwardly toward the body 1, until the end 11 engages through the material and into the opening 10. It will be noted that by inward swinging movement of the arm 12, the catch member 7 will engage with the shoulder 1 and prevent inward movei'nent on the part of the arm with respect to the body of the pin, until the catch member is disengaged from the shoulder, against the tension of the spring. From this it will be apparent that we have provided a simple and durable safety device which is preferably adapted to be attached to scarf pins and prevent the same from be- 1 ing accidentally withdrawn from the mate rial with which it is engaged. The device itself, is extremely simple in its construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
l/Vhile we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying our invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what we claim is 1. A device of the class described including a pin member having an enlarged head portion, a body member pivotally mounted upon the head, an arm carried by the body member and projecting in parallel relation to the pin member, an angularly disposed engaging point carried by the arm and adapted for engagement with the pin 1nemher, a catch member carried by the body member adapted for engagement with the head of the pin, and a spring actuated member having one end secured to the head and the other end engaged with the catch member to normally retain said catch memher into engagement with the head of the pin, as and for the purpose set forth.

A device of the class described including a pin member having a transverse opening therein and further provided with an enlarged head at one end, a shoulder formed upon one side of the head portion, a body member pivotally mounted upon the head, an arm carried by the body and projecting in parallel relation with the pin member, an angularly disposed engaging point carried by the arm and adapted to be disposed within the transverse opening in the pin mem- Misfire;
ber, a catch-member carried by the body and adapted for engagement with the shoulder, and a spring actuated member interposed between portions of the body and the catch member whereby to normally retain said catch into engagement with the shoulder, and securely retain the engaging point within the transverse opening.
3. Adevice of the class described including a pin member having a transverse opening, a head portion formed integral with one end, a body member pivotally mounted upon the head, an arm projecting from the body in parallel relation with the pin member, an angular engaging point formed on the outer end of the arm and adapted to be normally disposed within the transverse opening, and spring actuated means carried by the body and having engagement with the head, whereby to normally retain the engaging pointwithin the opening.
