ADJUSTABLE AUTOMOBILE-PEDAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1, 1914. Serial No. 842,216.
To all whom it may concern provision of an adjustable automobile pedal, of unique construction, whereby the pedal may be lengthened or shortened, to accommodatethe particular chauffeur or driver, and in order that the pedal may be conveniently and properly operated.
It. is also the object of the present invention, to provide an adjustable pedal comprising slidably or telescoping sections, in
combination with novel means tor holding or locking the sections at various adjustments relative to one another.
It is within the scope of the present invention also, to provide a device of the character indicated,jwhich will be comparatively simple, non-encumbering and inexpensive in construction, and which will be convenient, practical and efiicient in its use.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in: vention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 isa side elevation of the improved pedal. Fig. 2 is a fragmental side elevation of the device illustrating the latch released to enable the pedal to be adjusted. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a fragmental portionof the pedal, and illustrating the sections of the pedal locked or latched to prevent relative movement thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional detail taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.

In order to lock or hold the section 2 at various positions with respect to the section 6o upper or adjustable section 2 is equippedat l, a latch 5 is provided. This latch 5 is of peculiar construction, and embodies a the elongated side plates 6 having their upper edges connected by a yoke 7 at their forward o lower ends. The side plates 6 are also providedad acent their forward or lower ends with L-shaped or angular slots 8, certainof the armsof the slots 8 projectingupi wardly or toward the yoke 7, and the other arms of the slots projecting toward the fora ward or lower end of the side plates 6. The 2 side plates 6 of the latch 5 are disposed snugly against the sides of the guide t adjacent the upper or rear end of the guide,
and the yoke 7 passes over the top of the guide.
In order to mount the latch 5 upon the guide 4, headed studs or lugs 9 are attached to the sides of the guide 4 and are engaged through the slots 8 of the latch 5, in order that the free end of the latch 5 may be swung upwardly away from the rear or upper end of the guide 4:.
The free end of the latch 5 is provided with a transverse pin 10 terminally riveted through the free end portions of the side plates 6, and engageable in upwardly open-. mg notchesll provided. in the pedal section a erly adjusted, to bring one of the slots 11 adj accnt the upper or rear end of the guide 4:, the latch 5 may be manipulated to lock;
the section 2 against movement relative to the guide 4-. This is accomplished by first drawing the latch 5 so that the forwardly extending arms of the slots 8 are engaged with the studs or lugs 9 which will permit a the latch 5 to be swung downwardly so that the pin 10 enters the notch or slot 11. The section 2 is then slid downwardly or forwardly slightly, whereby the pin 10 will be moved into the notches or slots 12 of the guide l, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, and finally, the forward portion of the latch 5 is depressed whereby the upwardly projecting arms of the slots 8 will engage the lugs or studs 9. This is permitted due to the fact that the latch 5 being moved forwardly or downwardly with the section 2, as above indicated, to engage the pin 10 with the slots or notches 12, will move the upwardly eX- tending arms of the slots 8 into alinernent with the lugs or studs 9. The section 2 will then be locked against movement relative to the guide hinasmuch as the pin 10 of the latch 5 is engaged to one of the slots 11 to prevent the section 2 from moving relative to the latch, and the upwardly projecting or lateral arms of the slots 8 being engaged to the lugs or studs 9, will prevent the latch from moving relative to the guide 4. It is also to be observed that the pin 10 being engaged within the slots or notches 12, will prevent the free end of the latch5 from swinging upwardly. The latch 5 rests snugly against the sides and top of the guide a, to prevent any encumbering projection upon the pedal. To release the latch 5, the lower or forward end of the latch 5 must first be raised, to bring the forwardly eX- tending or longitudinal arms of the slots 8 in alinement with the lugs or studs 9, and then, the section 2 must be slid upwardly or rearwardly, to release the pin 10 from the slots or notches 12 of the guide. The latch 5 will then be moved upwardly or rearwardly with the section 2, the forwardly extending or longitudinal arms of the slots 8 being engaged over the lugsor studs 9, as seen in Fig. 2. The free end of the latch 5 may then be swung upwardly, to disengage the pin 10 from the corresponding slot 11, in which event thesection 2 may be readily adjusted or slid within the guide i. The section 2 may again be locked or latched, after it has been properly adjusted, in the manner above indicated.
With the peculiar structure described and illustrated, it is possible to lock the adjustable section 2 of the pedal securely in various positions, and without the liability of the latch 5 becoming accidentally released, as would be most undesirable. The other advantages and capabilities of the present invention will be obvious from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, without further comment being necessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An adjustable member embodying two sections having a sliding engagement, and a latch carried by one section and movable longitudinally thereof, the latch and other section having interengageable means, and the latch and first mentioned section having means adapted to interengage when the latch is moved longitudinally and to thereby prevent the disengagement-of the latch from the second mentioned section.
An adjustable member including a guide, a section slidable therethrough and having a series of notches, and a latch including side plates and a pin secured to certain ends thereof, the other ends of the side plates and sides of theguide having interengaging means to enable the latch to swing and slide longitudinally, the said pin being engageable in the said notches, and the guide having notches to receive the said pin when the latch is moved longitudinally.
3. An adjustable member comprising sections having a sliding engagement, and a latch carried by one section, said section and latch having interengaging means for permitting the longitudinal, lateral and swingin movement of the latch, the free end of the latch and other section having interengageable means, and the latch and the first mentioned section having means arrangedto interengage when the latch is moved longitudinally. a

An adjustable member comprising two sections having a sliding engagement, one section having a series of notches, a latch, the latch and other section having an interengaging L-shaped slot and stud to permit the latch. to move longitudinally and laterally, a pin carried by the free end of the latch. and engageable in the said notches, and the second mentioned section having a notch for receiving the said pin when the latch is moved longitudinally.
An adjustable member comprising a guide, a section slidable therethrough and having a series of notches, and a latch in cluding side plates disposed at the sides of the guide and a pin connecting certain ends of the side plates, the side plates having L- shaped slots and the sides of the guide having studs engaging through the said slots, the said pin being engageable with the said notches of the said section, and the guidefllc having notches at one end to receive the said pin when the latch is moved longitudinally.
