Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24,1914.
Application led February 2, 1912, Serial No. 675,055. Renewed July 28, 1913. Seriall No.. 781,666.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known' that 1'STANLEY T. E.` FLOWER, a`citizen of Canada, residing at Stewart, British Columbia, Canada, have inventedV certain new and useful Improvements in Can Perforators and Sealers, of
l which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to newl and useful improvements in a combined can perforator and sealer.
The objects offmy invention are to provide a can perfo-rator .and sealer, which is simple, economical and efficient, and of universal application to cans wherein .is kept liquids, such as milk and the like, for domestic consumption andy used directly out of the cans. And further objects are to provide a can perforator and sealer and handle combined, which will by hand 4Inanipulation punch openings in the top of a canV and the puncturing points remain in the openings, closing them to air and dirt, and when desired Vthe points may be raised permitting the flow'of liquid .from the can, thus providing a convenient and -sani try vessel for general household purposes. I accomplish these objects by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
in which, l
Figure 1 is a side vleW of the device,
' showing its attachment to a can. Fig. 2 is,
a sectional end view anda brokenaway portion of a can, showing the spurs penetrating a can top. Fig. 3`is a View looking down upon the device.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring specificallyl tothe drawings, l, isthe body portion, composed of a metallic strip'an'd of suitable dimensions to extend over an .ordinary small can, as at 2; The metallic strip 1, is formed with a compound curve, with an enlarged middle bend forming a bridge, 3, and one end, 4, anda'polnt, 5, on' a plane with the end 1. The end llex,- tends downwardly suiiiciently to be brazed to a transverse resilient circular strip of suitable size to clasp thelcircumference of the end of a can, as 7, which is provided to assist in retaining the device on the can in connection with the point 5, as hereinafter detailed.' At the opposite from end 4 on the body of the metallic strip l, is formed areetangularly projecting tongue, 3,1m which 1s provided a thumb screw opening, 9, which thumb screw 'is adapted to hold the device on the can'in coperation with; the strip 6.` The l rstrip 1 extends suficiently to form a curved handle, 10, the end of which rcst's 'on the can,
as at 11, thus acting as a brace and giving strength to the handle in the use of the de= vice on the cans. At the apex-of the enlarged central curve or "bridge in the metallic strip. 1, is provided an openin .12, through which lthe post may pass inthe as'- sembling'loftheiarts of the device, ashere'- inafter describe I A. cross bar, 13, lextends 'transversely 'to' thebody portion l, on each end of which is `provided a downwardly projecting spur, 14,.
bar 13, is'provided a rectangularly formed post, 15, of' suitable dimensions, the upper end terminatingfip a square shouldered head, '16 and an ovaltop 17. This post is adapted -to passV through the opening 12 in the body )ortion 1 in assembling the parts for' use.l spiral spring, 18is provided to surround the post 15, Ifor thel purpose of forcing-the cross bar 13 and the spurs 14 downward, retaining the latter in the punctures formed in the can by means ofthe pressure of the spurs, the-reby'closing and sealing these punotures and'preventing' the dirt or' dust from entering, and the contents of the can from spilling, should the saine be'upset. A lever, 19 resting on a convenient fulcrum 20 on the upper portion of body portion 1, is provided to withdraw the spurs 14 from Vthe puncturesv when desi-red This lever is provided with a slot, 2l, in one end, adapted to adjustment'on the post, 15, for the purpose of raising the same,l and the spiral spring, 18 forcing it back into position so thatthe spurs will again enter the openings in the can.
The operation is obviously as follows: After the device is adjusted onthe can, a push or light stroke on the oval 17 of the, head 16 ofr post l5 vwill force the spurs-14 through the top of the can, where they will remain closing the puncture's Ithus made, and when it is desired to use. the contents of the can. a pressure on the lever 1.8:w`illj raise the `post and the cross bar 13,l causing the spurs die lOyonepnncture will discharge the con- 1li to leave'- the punctures, leaving the pim@ tures clear, and bv tipping. the can by hanf.
tents, While the. other permits the air to enter, givingigl 'siif'cient ventilation topermit the-contentsto passent Without difculty. e
Upon jreleasingthe lever the spring 18 will force the crossv bai" 13 downward, causing the-spurs toa'gain ntiithepunctures closfon withan opening therein,
ing them asfbefore. `qhis operation can be repeated until the contents' ottheean is used,- When the` device may be Vremoved and placed4 'on another, thusiit may be need in-v. definitely.

'A device of the character. described, consisting 'of a metallic stripformed into a compound "curve With 'an 'enlarged central bend having an opening 'therein, fone end of Y said metallic strip having atransverse circniai strip bra-Zed tlfieaeto, the other end having. a rectangularlv o-rmedtongue thereon' With an opening therein, and extending into :i handle; a crossbar having a` spur at each end' thereof, 4and a.' rectangular post said'poet adapted to 'the opening' in the enlarged central loendot the.
