POLISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed April 4, 1914. Serial No. 829,578.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRoN GOODWIN, a citizen of the VUnited States, residing at Berwick, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in polishers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a window, mirror or the like; and an object of the invention is to provide a. device of this general character having novel and 4improved means whereby it may be caused to be brought into engagement with substantially the entire surfaceof the article to be polished.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a polishing cloth may be detachably clamped in operative position so that the same may be removed or replaced as desired.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my irnproved polisher whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise inore convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein-w Figure 1 is a View in top plan and partly in section of a polishing device constructed i in accordance with an embodiment of.my inpane.
vention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the device as disclosed in Fig. 1, with the operating handle shown in elevation; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken through a marginal portion of the retaining block herein disclosed; and Fig. 4 is an elevational view showing a polisher constructed in accordance with my invention in applied position upon a window As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a body portion substantially elliptical in form and having proJecting from its marginal portions the iangcs 2, such flanges at the opposite ends of the body being united and projected to afford the extensions 3, such pointed extensions being reversely directed and having one of their faces formed in substantial continuity with the adjacent face of one of the flanges. By having the opposite edges of the body 1 disposed on a cui've and having the extensions 3, it will be observed that a much better action may be had upon the surface to be polished and that effective engagement may be had in the corners of a window-pane, mirror or the like in order to effect a polishing` of substantially the entire surface.
The outer face of the body 1 has affixed thereto, preferably by a suitable adhesive, a compressible pad 4. The body 1 and iianges 2 are adapted to be incased by a body 5 of chamois leather 0r the like, the marginal portions of such body 5 overlying the upper edges of the flanges-2, so that such marginal portions of the flexible body may be clampingly engaged by the retaining block 6 of a configuration corres onding t0 the configuration of. the chamber produced by the flanges 2. I find it of advantage to have the lower marginal portions 8 of the retaining block 6 inclined or beveled inwardly so that a much better clamping action may be had upon the marginal portions of the flexible body 5.
Projecting upwardly from the body 1 within the chamber 7 thereof is a lug9 of a height less than the height of the flanges 2 and being provided at its axial center with the threaded recess 10 adapted to be engaged by the retaining member 11, herein set forth as a headed screw disposed through a suitable opening 12 in the block 7 and adapted to aline with the recess of the lug and operating in a manner which is believed to be self-evident.
In order that the device may be operated with convenience and facility, I provide the outer face of the block 6 `with the hand grasp let of any predetermined configura! is of an extrcmelv simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the elfectiven'css with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for `this reason l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several lparts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A device` of the character described including a body substantially elliptical in form and having reversely directed pointed extensions at its opposite extremities and provided with marginal flanges extending entirely along the longitudinal margins thereof and united at their adjacent ends, and with an upstanding lug positioned between said flanges, sa1d lug being of a .height less than the height of the flanges, a compressible load secured to the under surface of the body, a polishing cloth overlying the pad and overlying the flanges, a clamping block insertable between the flanges, the lower marginal portions of the block bein beveled inwardly, a screw loosely directe through the clamping block and in threaded engagement with the lug and a hand grasp projecting from the outer surface of the clamping block.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliiX my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
n MYRON GUDWIN. i 1Witnesses:
PETER DRAPEAU, RANSAUL B. CRooK.
