Be it known that I, (ELEMENT OLEVELAND, :floitizen of tl1e United States, residing in New York city, in the{oounty o.f New York und Stute of New York, haveinvented certain new nrlcl usefl Improivements ir1 Hat Pins, ofwhioh thefollowing is a specification.
This inventioirrelatesto -coxnbinable hat? plus, am]. a prinoipal objecbofthe invention is to provlde a con 1positeor drlplex hat-prn acln1tecl for usein a singlel3in, 01' as ap a1r o'F separate plus, und also as a snfety -dewrroe.
In the aocompanying clrawing form1ng a part o:f this specification, Figure 1 is a side vlew,--pzwtinlly in section, of a safety hetpinmaclein accorclance withmy present 111- vention und having the twdcoxnponent plus ussemblecl as when in use as a combined or duplex pin. Fig. 2 1s a s1m1lar v1ewqllustrating the manner of assemblmg the two oombinable pins preparatory to inserting them into a hat.
Slmilar characters designate like parts in both of the figures. As shown in the drawing, the duplex hetpin comprises the outer tubular pin, des1gnatecl in a general way by B, ancl having the entering-pomt, 2, als one end, und some suitable heacl, as h, a1; the other end; this view also shows the pin B assemblecl with a central pin C fo1 use as a comblnecl am] salety hat-pin. Fig.2 shows the tubulur pin -l with a seconcl pin, C, locatecl centrally therein, a:fter being insertecl from the leftlmncl in Fig. 1, through the entrance 3; this central pin has a heacl d, und the point 4 extencling beyoncl tl1e p0intencl 2, so thes,e two entering-Encls, 2 nncl 4 together const1- flute one extenclecl entering-point 2-J=, .for tl1e combinecl plus B und C. When the two plus are thus assembled, they constitute one article, one pin, whicl1 is aclaptecl to be usec1 in all respects as an ordinary single hat- Vhen thus 11sed, however, on being insertecl into a hat, -the central pin C may be withclrawn ancl used as an ordinary hat-pin, sepnrately ancl in anotherlocation, sothe then unassemblecl pins are each operative indepenclently of the other.
Fig. 1 also shows a hat; outline, N, With the pin B in position, as if it had been insertecl in the manner alo0ve desoribecl, but with tl1e pin C,-after its withdrawal as above statkad,reinsertecl from the opp0site direction, so the head d forms a safety guarcl HAT-PIN.

the point 4 0ff theoentral-pin b is guarded l W1thin -the bore 6 of thepin B, thus forming u snfety devioe ot. euch pin Ifor thepoint of theother, while the head Zahns a part thereof forxt;ihg a11end-stop for the point- 4 of said 1 serte cl through the hat, as N Fig. 1,- afte1 i1re assembled in zu practlcally asxngle p1n andmay then be 1n- WhlCh -i:l1e central pjn may be withclrawn und re-,insertecl fronrthepoint end of the;
pin B, asshown in Fjgl, so that when th1ls und whenthus reversely combined, have a heaclut euch encl thereof. 1 The tubulan p1n B isshown providecl with an entrance, as 3,
near the head-encl thereof for an insertible central pm, und lms th1s entrance-way branohmg from one s1cle of the tube, f'or theroby l'orn1ing in the tubea reserved por tion serving as a point-receptacle with a closed end 1:01 recewmg the pomt of the central pin when this is insertedfron1 the pointencl 0f the tubulzu pin.
As one oonvenient arrangement for meeting the orclinary requirements, the branchway entrance may, as inclicatecl in Figs.l
in oneside of the tubular pin B and extending 130 wlthin a short distance of the head h.
When this arrangement is used and on ac- -8 und 2, consist 01 a narrow slot, 3, formed count 015 the considerable difference in the external diumeters 0f the two pins, it is evident the slot 3 may be only wide enough to allow the entrance of the small pin C, especially ns this central pin Will usually have a considerable degree of flexibility. In l practice tl1o branch-way entrance may be olotainecl und arranged in varying speoific wnys, while securing the required result in substzu1tially the same manner.
The tube of the pin B,may in practice be nmcle extremely thin, preferably of harddmwn, or temperecl metal; usually a steel tube suitably tempered Will be prefemble. B11t t0 faoilitate thei'r illustration I have shownthe diameters of both pins somewhat 1 central pin,- und having this entrance-way branching from ne side 0f the tube ab a point near but not at the head-end f the taube 0f the tubular pin,and having thebore of the tube constituting a point receptacle profided With a point-stop for receiving and stopping the pointof the central pin when.
' this is inserted from the point-end of the end 0f the tubularpin, and a stop closing the head-end of the point-receptacle.
8. In a duplex hat-Pin, a tubular pin having at the head-end therof a branch-way entrance f01 an insertible central pin, 21 pointreceptxcl consist'ing 0f 'a part of the tube between the head-end 0f the tube and said branch-waj1 entrance f01 receiving the point of the cent-ralpin when this is inserted hom the point-nd of the tubular-pin, a heacl 0n the insertible pin arranged for constituting a stop when this pin is inserted -through said bfanch-way entrance.
4:. In a duplex hatpin a tubular pin hzwing at the head-end thereof a branch-way entmnce f01 an insertible cent1al pin, a
pointreceptacle consisting of a part ofthe v tube between the head-encl 0f the tube and said branch-way entrance f01' receiving the point 0f the central Pin'when this is inserted fmm the point-end of the tubular-pin, a head 0n the tubular pin ancl arranged f01' closing the head-end of the point-receptacle,
and a. head on the insertible pin arranged f01 constitutingfl stop when this pin is inserted through sa1d branch-way entrance.
