Specification of Letters Patent.
NEST.
Patented Nov. 2 1, 1914.
Application filed June 23, 110. Serial No. 568,493.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MYRTA HAGIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayland, county of Henry, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hens Nests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hens nests and has for its object the production of a construction of this character which will be of durable, economical, and highly sanitary design, and one which will be of highest efliciency in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a hens nest characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hens nest embodying the preferred form of my invention, Fi g. 2 is a horizontal section of an end portion of the construction taken on line ax of Fig. 3, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line line yy of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing 1 indicates the body of the device which is of an elongated rectangular form comprising top and bottom walls 2 and 3 respectively, a back wall 4, and end walls 5, said walls forming a hollow construction of the shape mentioned which is open at its front side. Said walls are formed of a single piece of sheet metal which is bent into the form shown, the end walls 5 being formed integral with the bottom 3, said end walls forming portions being bent at right angles to said bottom, the top and rear edges thereof being provided with inwardly projecting flanges 6 which rest against the inner surfaces of the ad acent end portions of the top and back walls 2 and 4, and to which said flanges are rigidly secured by means of rivets 7. Thus a simple construction of great rigidity and durability is effected.
The front edge of the bottom 3 is provided with a coextensive narrow upwardly extending integral flange 8 which is adapted when the device is in use, to constitute a front wall for the bottom portions of the nests which are formed in the body in the manner described in the following, to prevent accidental discharge or escapement of the hay or straw or other contents of the nests when the latter are in open condition. The extremities of said flange 8 are provided with inwardly projecting integral ears 9 which rest upon the inner surfaces of the adjacent portions of the end walls 5 and to which they are rigidly secured byv rivets 10. Thus said flange is rigidly held in the position stated.
Provided within the body is a plurality of spaced vertically and transversely extending partitions 11, the same being rigidly held in position therein by rivets 12 which pass through the top and bottom walls 2 and 3 of the body 1 and extend through the flanges 13 formed at the upper and lower extremities of said partitions, said flanges resting against the inner surfaces of said walls. Said partitions 11 divide the interior of the body 1 into a plurality of similar rectangular compartments or nests 14 which are open only at their front ends. Rigidly secured by means of rivets 15 to the front edges of the partitions 11 and body end walls 5 are channel guides 16 in which are slidably mounted the vertical edge portions of closures 17 for the compartments 14. The upper ends of the closures 17 are provided with outwardly projecting flanges 18 adapted to constitute hand pieces to facilitate opening or closing movement of the closures and also to serve as stops to limit downward movement thereof, when serving in the latter capacity, the same being adapted to coact with the upper extremities of the guides 16. Ventilation openings 19 are provided in each of said closures.
The body 1 is mounted upon supporting brackets 20 by means of which the former may be secured to any suitable support and at any convenient height. The horizontal bars 21 of the brackets 20 project beyond the front end of the body 1 for the support of a bar 22 which is adapted to serve as a roost.
The construction set forth is simple and durable, by virtue of this simplicity thorough and expeditious purging thereof is permitted, whereby the same may be readily maintained in a sanitary condition. The device is compact and may be readily supported in a suitable location, and is adapted, in addltlon to serving as a nest, to also serve as a roost.
While I have shown What I deem to be.
the preferable form of my device I do not Wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts de scribed Without departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention What I claim asneW and desire to seeureby Letters Patent is:
A nest comprising a rectangular body having a top, bottom, back and ends, and provided on the interior with spaced vertically disposed partitions to provide aplurality of compartments open at the front;
in combinationv With a plurality of guides, each formed of a single piece of metal of substantially rectangular shape adapted along one longitudinal edge to be secured to each side of said partitions With the opposite. edge extending beyond the lines of the front of said body, the said outwardly extending portion of each guide being bent upon itself to form a vertically disposed channel, and doors adapted at each side to slidably engage within said channels, substantially as described;
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of twosubscribing Witnesses.
