ELBERT NICHOLSON, 0F STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
FIREPLACE-I-IOOD.
Applcationled December l0, 1913.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELBERT NICHOLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplace- Hoods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fireplace hoods.
My invention relates particularly to the damper features of the hood.
The main object of this invention is, to provide an improved fireplace dome and damper which may be easily set and adjusted so that the damper actuating hand piece may be brought to any desired positions either in the front wall or side wall of the fireplace or mantel.
Further objects relating to details and economies of structure and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention part of this specification, in which Figure I is a detailvertical section from front to rear through a fireplace structure embodying features of my invention. Fig. II is a longitudinal section through the hood proper on a line corresponding to line 2-2 lof Fig. I. Fig. III is a detail plan view of my improved fireplace hood, the bracket 24 and worm being omitted. Fig. IV is an end elevation looking from the right of Fig. III. Fig. V is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 5 5 of Fig. III. Fig. VI is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 6 6 of Fig. III. Fig. VII is an enlarged detail section showing the wall socket 34 and the finger piece 25 associated therewith. Fig. VIII is an enlarged detail end elevation of the adjustable bracket 2e from the right hand of Fig. II. Fig. IX is a detail sectional view of the structure with the spur gear adjusting pinion in place taken on a line corresponding to line 1-1 of Fig. II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawing, l represents a fireplace of common construction having a flue 2. Across the front of the fireplace is an angle bar supporting ledge 3. The end walls 4 and 5 of the hood are provided with the base iianges 6 adapted to rest on suitable ledges or shoulders formed by the lining brick of the fire-place as in the structure shown or as otherwise may be provided. 'Ihe front wall 7 of the dome rests upon the supporting ledge 3. The rear ends of the side walls are connected by the angle bar 8 whichis bolted to suitable angle iianges 9 on the inner sides of the end walls. The front wall 7 is bolted to suitable flanges l() on the end walls. The reinforcing bars 11 and 12, preferably of angle iron, are bolted to the frontwall 7 to reinforce the same.
|The damper 13 is provided with journals 14 and 15 disposed in suitable bearings 16 and 17 of the end walls 4 and respectively.
A gear 18 is arranged on the journal 1T and secured to the damper so that the damper is rotated thereby. Lugs 19 onthe gear 18 engage the end of the damper. The gear 18 is provided with a vstop pin 20 which coacts with a flange-like stop 21 on the adjacent end wall, thestops being disposed to engage when the damper is opened. IVhen it is desired to control the damper from the front of the fireplace the gear is actuated through the worm 22 which is provided with a square spindle or actuating rod `23. This spindle 23 isjournaled in the bracket 24;
which is adj ustably mounted on the end wall 5 to permit the spindle being swung to the ydesired position to bring the finger piece 25 of the spindle into the position desired and also `to permit the spindle being disposed so that it will pass between facing bricks or tiles instead of necessitating the breaking of such bricks or tiles.
To provide for the convenient adjustment of the bracket 24 the end wall 4 is slotted at 26, 27 and 28, the slots being segmental. fI`he supporting bolts 29 of the bracket are arranged in these slots. The upper edge of the end walls is curved at 30, while the bracket is provided with a rib 31 having lug portions 32 bearing or engaging the curved portion of the wall, thusassisting the bolts in supporting the bracket. The bracket is provided with a hole in which the bolts 29 may be arranged as necessary to secure the desired adjustment. il! ith the parts thus arranged the actuating spindle may, as stated, be positioned desired, and arranged between the facing tile or brick. rlhe teeth of the are :terably tapered so that thc Worm may be swung to some entent sidewise ci the pinion Without inter- 'tering with its eiiective and easy operation. The Wall socket 3&1: is provided with a concave seat Se for the iace 36 oit the inger piece This permits the swinging of the spindle and at the same time the finished appearance oi the linger piece is retained.
illhen it is desired to control he damper from the side l substitute a small pinion 37, see Fig. liti for the Worm. The square spindle is then inserted through bearing hole 33, see Figs. lV, Vlll and 1X. A hole is made in the side Wall oi the lire place to receive it, the same as before, and the adjustment oi the bracket enables the proper location.
l have illustrated and described my im- {'25"' proveniente in detail in the 'form in which l have embodied the same 'for the market. l have not attempted to illustrate or describe the certain modilications and variations in structural details, Which l contem- ,'30`- plate, as l believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody my improvements as conditions may require. l desire, however, to be understood as claiming my improvements specifically in the form illustrated as Well as broadly Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l40T1 1.
