LELAND WILLIS, OF GRENLOCH, NEW JERSEY,
ASSTGNOR TO BATEMAN MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF GRENLOCH, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
MOUNTING FOR CULTIVATOR-BLADES.
Application filed. April 10, 1911.
To aZZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LELAND WILLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Grenloch, New Jersey, have invented cer- 5 tain Improvements in Mountings for Cultivator-Blades, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices employed for mounting cultivator blades, hoes, or shovels upon the frame of the machine so as to permit of vertical and lateral adjust ment of the same, the object of my invention being to simplify and cheapen the devices employed for this purpose. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanving drawing, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of a cultivator blade mounting constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line aa, Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating a modification of the invention.
In the drawing, 1 represents a cultivator blade or, it may be a hoe or shovel, depending upon the type of machine to which my invention is applied. This blade is mounted upon a hanger 2 depending from the fixed 1 0 frame of the machine to which it is pivoted by means of a pin or bolt 4, being retained in position by means of a wooden or other brake pin 5 engaging the frame and hanger in the usual manner and serving to permit .1: the hanger and the blade carried thereby to yield when it is subjected to abnormal pressure.
Between the blade and the front of the hanger 2 is interposed a block 6 whose rear face is curved and fits the correspondingly curved front face of the hanger so as to permit of the swinging of the blade laterally to one side or the other, as may be desired. \Jlhe blade 1 is secured in place by means 45 of a bolt 3 which passes through central openings in the blade 1 and block 6, through the slotted lower portion of the hanger 2 and through a washer 7 bearing upon the rear face of said slotted lower portion of the hanger, the rear end of the bolt being threaded for the reception of the nut 9 which bears against the outer face of the washer 7, the latter being curved and the washer having an elongated slot which permits of a diagonal disposition of the bolt 3,

the slotted lower portion of the hanger and serves to prevent lateral movement of the washer in respect thereto. The slotted lower portion of the hanger 2 also permits of vertical adjustment of the blade to permit different depths of penetration of the same.
My invention provides for the mounting of a blade with the use of a minimum number of parts, and by causing the bolt 3 to engage directly with the blade 1 avoid the necessity for providing the back of the same with an attacking yoke and thereby not only reduce the expense of the mounting but also overcome the inconvenience arising from its use, the liability of breakage of this yoke compelling the farmer to keep on hand an extra supply of blades in order to replace blades and keep the machine in proper operative condition.
A mounting such as that constituting the subject of my invention has no parts which are susceptible to breakage under ordinary conditions of use of the machine.
Instead of providing the washer 7 with a curved outer face and a straight inner face these conditions may be reversed, as shown in Fig. 3, the outer face of the washer being flat and the inner face curved for bearing upon the beveled rear faces of the side members of the slotted lower portion of the hanger 2, in which case the slotting of the washer will not be necessary. The construc tion shown in Figs. 1 and 2-, is, however, preferred.
I claim:
1. The combination of the depending hanger having a slotted lower portion. the blade, a block disconnected from the blade but interposed between the latter and the slotted lower portion of the hanger and having a curved rear face bearing upon the correspondingly curved front face of said hanger, a bolt adapted to an opening in the blade and block and passing through the slotted portion of the hanger, a nut on said bolt, and a washer interposed between said nut and the rear face of the hanger, said washer also having a curved face.
2. The combination of the depending hanger having a slotted lower portion, the blade, a block disconnected from the blade but interposed between the latter and the washer having a curved outer face and a 1 slotted lower portion of the hanger and havtransverse slot for the reception of the bolt. ing a curved rear face bearing upon the cor- In testimony whereof, I have signed my respondingly curved front face of said name to this specification in the presence of hunger, a bolt adapted to an opening in the two subscribing witnesses.
blade and block and passing through the LELAND WILLIS. slotted portion of the hanger, a nut on said Witnesses:
bolt, and a washer interposed between said HARRY SNYDER,
nut and the rear face of the hanger, said E. E. WILsoN.
