; v .UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. LOUIS COSTA, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PINEAPPLE-EYE REMOVER.
Application filed February 3,1914.
To all whom it, may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS COSTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pineapple- Eye Removers, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in pineapple eye removers,.the object of the invention being to provide a device which can be readily operated to grip and pull the eye out of a pineapple.
A further object is to provide an improved arrangement ofjaws, one of which is longer than the other and sharp so that it may be projected into the pineapple under the eye, partly dislodging the eye and loosening the same so that when the eye is pinched between the jaws, it can be withdrawn without difficulty.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated which can be readily grasped in the hand and operated by a movement of the fingers to facilitate the gripping and the removal of the pineapple eyes.
lVith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating-my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section through the jaws, showing the latter together, and Fig. 4 is a view in transverse section on the line H of Fig. 3.
My improved device comprises two members 1 and 2, which are pivotally connected by a rivet 3, and are provided at their shorter ends with relatively flat jaws 4 and 5 respectively.
The jaw 4 I shall term the upper jaw because in manipulating the device this jaw is ordinarily in the uppermost position. Jaw 4: is connected by a coiled spring 6 with the member 1, so that the spring normally holds the jaws apart. J aw 5 is longer than jaw 4L, and is provided at its extreme end with a relatively sharp lip 7 which is adapted to out under the eye of the pineapple.
The opposed surfaces of the jaws 4: and 5 are formed with transverse grooves 8 pref- Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented Nov. 2 1, 1914.
Serial No. 816,170.
erably having one beveled wall and one straight wall at right angles to the-surface of the jaw, sothat when the jaws are moved together, they will grip the eye and prevent the same from drawing out between the aws.
. Jaw 5 on its lower face is provided with a lug 9 which limits the movement of the jaw in the pineapple, preventing the latter from being moved into the pineapple a distance greater than desirable for gripping the eye. I
Member 1 on its longer end is provided with a laterally propecting relatively flat tongue 10 which fits snugly in the palm of the hand, and member 2 has a lug 11 which engages tongue 10 and limits the pivotal movement of the members toward each other, preventing any possibility of breaking the pivot 3 or breaking the members by a too strong grip.
A lug 12 is formed on member 2 near its longer end and against this lug the little finger of the hand is positioned so as to prevent the hand from slipping off the device while exerting a pull on the pineapple eye.
The operation is as follows: The members 1 and 2 are gripped by the hand, the tongue 10 being positioned against the cushion in the palm of the hand with the thumb and fore-finger against opposite sides of the tool at its pivot point. Jaw 5 is then forced into position under the eye of the pineapple and the members 1 and 2 move toward each other, so that the jaws 4 and 5 will grip the eye. When a firm grip is had, the operator exerts a longitudinal pull on the device and pulls the eye neatly from the pineapple. It will be observed that the jaws 4 and 5 are extended transversely so that they are of a width in excess of the combined width of the members 1 and 2, affording an extended surface to firmly grip the eye, the gripping action being facilitated by the grooves 8 as above explained.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty. to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described, comprising two members pivotally connected near one end, said members at their shorter ends extending transversely and forming gripping jaws, both of said jaws relatively flat and one of said jaws extended beyond the other, substantially as described.
2. A. device of the character described, comprising two members pivotally connected near one end, said members at their shorter ends extending transversely and forming gripping jaws, one of said jaws extended beyond the other, and said longer jaw on its outer surface having a lug projecting at right angles thereto, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described, comprising two members pivotally connected near one end, said members at their shorter ends extended transversely forming gripping jaws, wider than the combined width of the handle end of said members and having grooves in their opposed surfaces, one of said jaws extended beyond the other and having a pointed end, substantially as described.
4. A device of the character described, comprising two members pivotally connected near one end, said members at their shorter ends extended transversely forming gripping jaws, wider than the combined width of the handle end of said members and having grooves. in their opposed surfaces, one of said jaws extended beyond the other and having a pointed end, and said longer jaw on its outer surface having a lug projecting at right angles to the jaw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
