C D N O r G N m A w m m U r o n P n 5 R E r E P u R R O N E H r provide a machine means and the means for SETH MERRION STOXVELL, OF SAN ARDO, CALIFORNIA.
SPOKE-AUGER.
Application filed January 20, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH M. STOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Ardo, in the county of Monterey and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spoke-Angers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices known as spoke augers which are used for cutting the felly-engaging dowels on the ends of the spokes.
The invention has for its object to produce a device of this class which shall be simple in construction and efiicient in operation and which may be readily clamped and held securely on the spoke that is to be operated upon.
A further object of the invention is to of the class described having simple and improved centering means, whereby the cutting tool may be adjusted with respect to the spoke so as to form the dowel uniformly either in axial alinement with the spoke or eccentrically with respect thereto, if preferred.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the cutter carrying feeding the same to the work.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view, showing the improved machine applied to a spoke in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a side new of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a rear elevation, the spoke being shown in section. F ig. 5 is a sectional detail view taken longitudinally through the feed clamp. Fig. 6 is a trans verse sectional view taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1'7, 1914. Serial No. 813,261.
are denoted by like characters of reference.
he frame of the improved device includes front and rear plates 11 and 12, the latter of which is positioned substantially at right angles to the front plate, said rear plate being provided with upturned lugs 13 having vertical slots 14 for the passage of bolts or connecting members 15 which extend through the front plate 11 at opposite sides of the latter, said bolts being provided with spacing sleeves l6 and with tightening nuts 17, thereby serving to rigidly connect the front and rear plates or members of the frame. It will be seen that by loosening the nuts, the rear plate may be raised or lowered with respect to the front frame by proper adjustment of the bolts with respect to the slots 14. Connected with the rear plate 12 by means of bolts 13 is a clamp member 19 between which and the plate 12 the spoke that is to be operated upon may be received, the frame of the device being held securely on the spoke by the clamp means described.
Secured on the front side of the front plate 11 are guides 20 connected together by a cross bar or flange member 21, said guides serving to support a slide 22 which is adjustable by means of a set screw 23 operating through the flange 21 and equipped with a jam nut .24, whereby it may be securely fastened against displacement by vibration or otherwise. The guide 20 carries an exteriorly threaded tubular sleeve 25 affording a bearing for a tubular shaft 26 which is slidable longitudinally through said sleeve and which extends through an aperture 27 in the plate 11, said tubular shaft carrying at its rear end a cutter 28 of conventional construction which is no part of the present invention. The tubular shaft 26 has at its front end a journal 29 on which an operating crank 30 is securely mounted.
31 is a resilient yoke, the bridge piece of which has an aperture 32, whereby it is mounted on the journal 29, the limbs of the yoke 31 being provided with terminal jaws 33, the inner faces of which are threaded for engagement with the externally threaded sleeve 25. The yoke is surrounded by an elongated hoop or clamp 34 having a set screw 35 bearing against one of the limbs of the yoke, thereby enabling the jaws 33 to be held in engagement with the threaded sleeve or to be released from such engagement when desired.
In the operation of this device, the frame is clamped on the spoke which is to be operated upon, as clearly seen in some of the figures of the drawings. By releasing the jaws 33 from engagement with the threaded sleeve, the tubular shaft maybe retracted from said sleeve, this being done previous to clamping the frame on the spoke. The tubular shaft is now moved rearward until the cutter 28 abuts on the end of the spoke, after which the set screw 35 is tightened so as to place the jaws 38in engagement with the threaded sleeve. v lhe slide 22 may now be adjusted by the set screw 23 which has swivel connection with said slide so as to properly center the tool with respect to'the spoke. The tool may now be rotated by means of the crank 30 and fed in the direction of the work by rotating the yoke 31 about the journal 29, said yoke being manipulated by one hand of the operator who turns the crank with the other hand. Adjustment to spokes of various cross sectional dimensions may be made by adjusting the rear plate 12 with respect to the bolts or connecting members 15.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is 1 1. In a device of the class described, a supporting frame comprising a front plate, arear plate disposed at right angles thereto and having upwardly extending slotted lugs, connecting bolts extending through said lugs and through the front plate, and spacing sleeves on said bolts, a clamp plate associated with the rear plate, and rotary cutting means associated with the front I pl ate.
1 and having upwardly extending slotted lugs,
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting frame comprising a front plate, a rear plate disposed at right angles thereto connecting bolts extending through said lugs and through the front plate, and spacing sleeves on said bolts, aclamp plate associated with the rear plate, a slide adjustably connected with the front plate, and rotary cutting means carried by said slide.
3. In a device of the class described, a supporting frame including means for clamping the frame in position for operation, said frame including also a front plate having an aperture, a slide adjustably mounted on the front plate, an externally threaded sleeve carried by the slide and extending through the aperture of the front plate, a tubular tool carrying shaft mounted for rotation in the sleeve and having at its front end a journal and a crank attached thereto, and means for feeding the tool carrying shaft lengthwise of the sleeve including a resilient yoke mounted on the journal and having jaws provided with threaded faces engaging the threaded sleeve, and clamp means engaging the yoke to maintain the jaws. in engaging position with respect 7 to the threaded sleeve.
4:. In a device of the class described, a frame having an apertured front-plate and a rear plate positioned at right angles thereto, a clamp member associated with the rear plate, guides on the front plate, said guides being connected by a flange member, a slide movably supported by the guides, a set screw threaded through the flange and having swivel engagement with the slide, a tubular tool carrying shaft extending through the sleeve, and means for rotating the tool carrying. shaft and feeding it lengthwise of the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 7 in presence of two witnesses. SETH MERBION STOVVELL.
