To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of'Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling- Maohines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in drilling machines of tion will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically definedv by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved drilling machine, with portions broken away, and showing it adapted for horizontal drilling by full lines and for Vertical drilling by dot-.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, Adesignates the truck or carriage which is designed to support the working parts and having wheels A and a pole or tongue A as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, it being designed to be moved easily about from place to place as may be desired. This carriage is provided upon its upper face with the substantially centrally-disposed longitudinal slots at extending from end to end and in which the feet of the upright support are fitted to work,- and with the transverse slots a intersecting withthe longitudinal slots a to permit of the removal of the upright from the carriage when desired, as will be readily understood from reference to Figs. 1 and 2. This carriage bed is further provided upon its upper face. with the radial grooves or channels a which are undercut or of a substantially inverted T- shape asshown in Fig. 1, and with the transverse slots a which are also undercut and which communicate with the longitudinal slots a as seen in Fig. 2.

They are socured at their lower ends to across plate B and'suitably braced as by the braces b as shown in Fig. 1, and to the under face of this plate are secured the yokes B in which are journaled the rollers b which are designed to travel upon the upper face of the bed, and
these yokes extend below the rollers and are formed into the lateral extensions, flanges or feet 12 as seen best in dotted lines in Fig. 1 where the bars are shown in their horizontal position,these feet being designed to travel in the channels or grooves a, and a 'which are undercut to receive them.
The drill-carriage is mounted upon the bars B for adjustment and suitably mounted in one portion thereof is the shaft 0 provided with a handle 0 and carrying a pinion D meshing with the rack b as seen best in Fi 4and upon this same shaft are the ratchets D as is shown best in said Fig. 4 with which engage the pawls or dogs 61 which are mounted in a casing as shown and provided with the thumb pieces d as seen in Figs. 1 and 4. The side pieces of the carriage G embrace the bars 13 and are connected by the plate a in which the ratchet'dogs are mounted.
E is a plate or bar having at opposite sides the vertical portions e which are formed with the curved slots e as seen best in Fig. 3 and through which pass the bolts E which secure thesame to the side portions of the drill-carriage and by which the plate or bar may beadtoo justed to give the desired angle orinclination to the drill. To this plate or bar is secured the plate F having the depending side barsf the lower ends of which are pivotally mounted on pivots f held in the side portions 0 of the carriage, as seen best in Fig. 1. Supported by this plate F is the yoke Gin which is mounted the inclined shaft G, which carries the bevel pinion G and which shaft is provided with a swivel connection g with the shaft g from which power is conveyed from any suitable source, which may be if desired, a motor of any form mounted upon the carriage A. In suitable bearings in this yoke is journaled the horizontal shaft H which carries a bevel pinion H which meshes with the bevel pinion G as seen best in Fig. 4, and this shaft is extended through between the bars 13, its other end being supported in a bearing h in the plate or arm it supported on the drillcarriage and the end of this shaft carries a drill-holder or chuck of any well known form. The drill is fed forward by means of the handle H on the end of the shaft H, which is screw threaded as seen at h in Fig. 3, its hearing it being screw threaded to receive it.
The machine may be held to its work in any suitable manner. In Fig. 3 I have shown the bar B, as provided with a plurality of holes ifor the detachable engagement of a removable bolt I which secures thereto a brace bar I having an adjustable portion 1" with an opening to receive a rod I which is held at its ends in any suitable manner to the boiler J or other article being operated upon, and the machine may be adjusted along this rod if desired.
With the parts constructed and arranged substantially as above set forth the operation will be readily understood.
The truck A may be moved to the position desired and then the bars B with their accessories adjusted as occasion may require. The drill is adjusted to the desired height and angle and is revolved through the medium of the bevel gears,-the drill being fed forward by the handle and screw shaft.
When it is desired to use the machine for vertical work, I provide a rod J 2 which may be held between the bars 13 by a removable bolt J and an upright K which is detachably secured to the bed of the carriage by suitable means as bolts j j to one side of the longitudinal center of the machine as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and its upper end is provided with a horizontal portion K which extends over the longitudinal center of the machine as shown in Fig. 1 and indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and upon this horizontal portion is mounted to swivel a bifurcated support L.
When the bars are to be turned from the vertical into the horizontal position in which they are shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 the rod J 2 is secured in position by its bolt as shown in Fig. 1 and the upright K secured in position with the said rod resting in its bifurcated swivel. The bars and their carried parts are then moved so that their feet will move out of the lateral channels a and then the bars are swung into the horizontal position with the rod J and swivel as a fulcrum and after being brought to their horizontal position they are swung round in substantially a lengthwise position with relation to the truck A and the removable support M having been placed in position at the rear end of the carriage as shown in Fig. 1 and indicated in Fig. 2, a hook clamp N. is engaged with a lug or projection n on the said support M as seen in Fig.1 and the nut tightened so as to hold the bars to the support. The work may be clamped to the bed of the carriage by bolts or other means engaging in the undercut radial channels provided therein for that purpose.
When the machine is again to be used for horizontal or radial drilling the upright K and rod J are removed, the hook clamp disengaged from the support M and the bars 13 placed back in their vertical position.
The support M may be removed or left in its position as may be desired.
Modifications in details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is-- 1. A portable drill having its drill-carriage mounted for adjustment upon the truck th ereof and carried by a support mounted for pivotal movement from a vertical to a horizontal position or vice versa, and a support on the truck for said carriage in its adj usted position substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a portable carriage having longitudinal and transverse slots, of a drill-support having a yoke with lateralextensions for engaging said slots, as set forth.
3. The combination with a carriage having longitudinal and transverse intersecting channels, of a drill-support having a yoke with lateral extensions to engage said channels, and rollers, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a portable carriage having longitudinal and transverse intersecting channels, of substantially parallel bars mounted for adjustment in said channels and for removal therefrom, and a drill operating and carrying shaft mounted in said bars, as set forth.
5. The combination with the carriage having longitudinal and transverse channels, of the bars having yokes with lateral extensions and rollers, and adjustably and removably mounted in said channels, as set forth.
6. The combination with a drill support having a yoke with lateral extensions, of a portable drill-carriage bed having longitudinal and transverse channels and radial slots, as set forth.
7. The combination with a drill support having a yoke with lateral extensions, of a portable drill-carriage bed having radial undercut and longitudinal and transverse intersecting channels and radial slots, substantially as specified.
8. The combination with a portable carriage, and parallel bars adj ustably mounted thereon, of the drill-operating devices, the ad- 3' ustable support therefor, and the detachable support with a bifurcated swivel upon which the same is designed to be swung from a horizontal to a vertical position and vice versa, as set forth.
9. The combination with the carriage bed, of the parallel bars carrying the drill and drill-carriage adjusting devices, and-the detachable support with swivel, substantially as specified.
10. The combination with the carriage bed, and the bars carrying the drill and drill-carriage adjusting "devices, of the detachable support and swivel, the detachable rod held between the said bars and means for holding said rod detaehably in place, as set forth.
