DETACHABLE LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed Nev. 1v, iai-i.
Application 'filed October 12, 1911. Serial No. 654,269.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN V. DOWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful `Improvements in Detachable Lamp- Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp burners and more particularly to extinguishers therefor.
The object of the invention is the provision of a simple, convenient and eiiicient attachment for the burner whereby the light may be readily extinguished without blowing down the chimney.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple and eilicient light extinguisher for lamp burners which may be removably attached to the wick tube and which, when operated, will be automatically returned to inoperativeV position so that the lamp may be lighted upon the application of the flame to the wick without operating the extinguisher.
A further object of the invention will appear as the following specific description 1s read in connectionwith the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burner showing the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the attachment shown applied to the wick tube with the remainder of the burner removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the burner.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an ordinary lamp burner of any suitable construction to which the extinguisher is attached. The burner consists of the usual perforated diaphragm 2 through which the wick tube 3 passes and extending downwardly from the diaphragm is a rim or wheel 4 having a horizontal liange 5 upon which the chimney (not shown) is adapted to rest, this flange also secured thereto and projecting vertically therefrom the usual chimney spring 6.
The attachment comprises a spring clip 7 adapted to removably clamp upon the wick tube 3. This clip has hinged thereto a concave cover or cap 8 which has projecting therefrom an arm 9 upon which is pivotally mounted an operating rod 10. This operating rod passes through a slot in the perforated diaphragm and has an upwardly and outwardly curved end which makes the rod convenient to manipulate. lVhen the rod is forced inwardly, the cap or cover 8 is raised and placed over the wick tube which effectively puts out the blaze and immediately upon release of the rod, its weight returns the cap or cover to normal condition with the wick exposed through the opening in the wick cap of the burner. This action is due only to the fact that the rod is free to move in the slot formed in the perforated diaphragm and when operated the upper end of the rod does not extend above the vertical axis of the tube and is therefore free to drop at all times. Immediately after being released the rod will drop and throw the cap to inoperative or normal position.
The lever 10 is provided with a curved surface 11 which underlies the curved surface 12 of the dome 13 of the burner. The surface 12 being thus disposed in the path of adjustment of the lever serves to engage against the surface 11 and thereby effect a lateral advance movement of the cap 8 when upward pressure is applied to the manipulating end of the lever. The lever includes an integral member having its lower end curved upwardly as at 12 to present a hand grip and its upper end is provided witha forwardly projecting straight portion 13', the latter mentioned portion of the lever having pivotal connection with the vertical portion of the L-shaped bracket 9. The said lever is further provided with a downwardly and outwardly inclined body portion 13 having a frictional engaging surface 14 formed on the bottom longitudinal edge thereof at a point adjacent its point of pivotal connection with the L-sliaped bracket 9, whereby upon the closing of the cap 8, the said surface 14: of the body portion of the lever will frictionally bind with the medial portion of the rear longitudinal surface of the cap and prevent the accidental opening thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
In a device of the class described including a cap, an L-shaped bracket carried by said cap and a manipulating lever connected with the vertical portion of said bracket for opening and closing the cap, said lever including an integral member having its lower end curved upwardly to present a gripping surface, and its upper end `formed With a forwardly projecting In' testimony whereof I affix' niy signastra-ight connecting portion, said lever beture in' presence of tWo Witnesses. ing provided with a forwardly and downardly inclined body portion, the bottoni longitudinal surface of said portion adja- VVitnesses': cent the upper end thereof adapted to friehis tionally bind against the rear medial por- RoTf'B- X READE: tion of said cap when the latter is in closed mark position, thereby positively preventing any JAMES W DOWN- 10 accidental opening of the cap.
JOHN V. DOWN.
