Description

P. H. BABGOGK. SAFETY DEVICE FOR WATER GAGES.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.22, 1913.
Patented Nov. 17. 1914.
INVENTOR To all whom it PATENT onrron.
FRANK HENRY BABCOCK, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
' SAFETY DEVICE FOR WATER-GAGES.
Application filed January 2 may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HENRY BAB- COCK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new andiuseful Improvements in Safety Devices for Water- Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a safety device for water gages, and the primary object of m invention is the provision of positive and reliable means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth for housing a water gage whereby it can be safely used, without any danger of persons 1n the vicinity of the gage being injured by water and pieces of glass when the gage bursts.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a water gage with a novel jacket or housing that is of such shape as to retard water and broken pieces of glass when the gage bursts, the water and glass being deflected in a direction that prevents persons from being injured.
A further object of this invention is to furnish a water gage with a novel sectional jacket that has transparent plates in proximity to the gage whereby it can be easily observed. a
A still further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that will be here-. inafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the safety device as applied to a gage, Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the device, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device, Fig. 1 is an elevation of the inner side 0 a detachable section of the device, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the device.
Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the drawing wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a water pipe provided with a gage holder 2 for a water gage 3 that has suitable connections for the purposes for which it is employed.
1 denotes an oblong jacket that has top and bottom plates 5 and 6 provided with bosses 7 to receive the gage 3 and one of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914:.
2, 1913. Serial No. 743,504.
these bosses rests upon the holder 2 for supporting the jacket. The bottom plate 6 has a drain nipple 8 upon which can be placed a drain pipe 9. The bottom and top plates 5 and 6 are pear-shaped or triangular in plan and the bosses 7 are located at the acute angles of said plates while the drain opening is approximately central of the bottom plate 6.
The jacket 4: has the front side thereof provided with an oblong opening 10 and detachably mounted in said opening, be tween the top and bottom plates 5 and 6 is an angle plate 11 which is substantially V-shaped in cross section. The angle plate 11 has side flanges 12 provided with notches 13 and the sides of the jacket 1 are provided with lugs 14: having pockets 15. The angle plate 11 can be placed with the lugs 14 fitting in the notches 13. By then lowering the angle plate the upper walls 16 of the notches 13 can be seated in the pockets 15 whereby the angle plate will be detachably-held in engagement with the jacket. The angle plate 11 is provided with seats 17 for inner beveled transparent plates 18, the seats 17 cooperating with the walls of the opening 10 in holding the inner transparent plates. The angle plate 11 has oblongopenings 19 and holders 20 for outer transparent plates 21. The transparent plates 18 and 9.1 are disposed at an angle relatively to the gage 3 and on account of expansion and contraction the inner transparent plates 18 are held in position by resilient clips 22 that are secured in the angle of the plate 11 by screws 23 or other fastening means. The plates 18 and 21 permit of the gage 3 being easily observed and the large space within the jacket readily accommodates water and broken glass until it can escape through the pipe 9 \Vith the walls of the angle plate 11 disposed at an angle relatively to the gage 3 broken glass is deflected into the jacket and with the transparent plates of suitable thickness said plates are not injured by broken glass, and water is confined within the jacket without any danger of a person being scalded or injured.
It is thought that the utility of the safety device will be ap arent without further description and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention. it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such against the jacket 7 further provided at its front with variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A safety device for water gages comprising a jacket provided with a drain and further provided at its front with an open ing, a supporting plate extending into said opening and detachably connected to said jacket, said plate associated with said jacket to provide an inner seat, a transparent plate mounted in said inner seat, said supporting plate provided with an outer seat, and an outer transparent plate mounted in said outer seat and arranged parallel to and spaced from said inner transparent plate.
2. A safety device for water gages comprising a jacket provided with a drain and an opening, a supporting plate extending into said opening and detachably connected to said jacket, said plate associated with said jacket to provide an inner seat, a transparent plate mounted in said inner seat, said supporting plate provided with an outer seat, an outer transparent plate mounted in said outer seat and arranged parallel to and spaced from said inner transparent plate, and resilient means carried by said jacket and engaging said inner transparent plate for constantly maintaining it against its seat.
3. A safety device for water gages comprising a jacket provided with a drain and having the forward portion thereof V- shaped in plan and through which is adapted to extend the gage glass, said forward portion of said jacket having an oblong opening, a supporting plate detachably connected to said forward portion and having a part thereof extending into said opening and associated with the walls of the opening Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents to provide a pair of inner seats, inner transparent plates mounted in said inner seats, said supporting plate provided with means to provide a pair of outer seats, and outer transparent plates mounted in said outer seats and arranged parallel to and spaced from said inner transparent plates, the seat part of said supporting plate and the said inner transparent plates fOIHllIlO' closures for said opening.
4. A safety device for water gages com prising a jacket provided with a drain and having the forward portion thereof V- shaned' in plan and through which is adapted to extend the gage glass, said forward portion of said jacket having an oblong opening, a supporting plate deta'cha-bly connected to said forward portion and having a part thereof extending into said opening and associated with the walls of the opening to provide a pair of inner seats, inner transparent plates mounted in said inner seats, said supporting plate provided with means to rovide a pair of outer seats, outer transparent plates mounted in said outer seats and arranged parallel to and spaced from said inner transparent plates the seat part of said supporting plate and the said inner transparent plates forming closures for said opening, and means connected to said part of said supporting plate and engaging the inner transparent plates for maintaining them against their seats.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
