SPRING WIRE CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE FULLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Spring \Vire Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire spring clips, and has for its object to provide a spring clip or clamp formed of a single piece of wire having a body portion constructed of a helical coil, which provides the spring tension for the clip, the portion of the wire at the ends of the coils being bent to extend il'ierefrom and provide a pair of handles, and a pair of cooperating jaws on opposite sides of the coil, and the ends of the wire returning and entering opposite ends of the coil, whereby the coil serves as a housing for the ends of the wire, and the ends of the wire serve as a fulcrum on which both jaws and handles are pivoted.
In the construction of my improved clip the wire may be bent to first form the jaws and then the handles, or may be bent to form the handles first and then the jaws.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1-- is a plan view of my improved clip showing one form of jaw and one form of handle. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2--2 01 Fig. 3 with the upper handle and jaw removed. Fig. 3- is a side elevation of my improved clip. Fig. 4 is a View illustrating thedii'ferent bends of the wire by which the clip is formed showing the jaw members disconnected from the coil and sprung open laterally in opposite directions.
Referring to the drawings, the middle portion of the wire is formed into a hollow helical closed coil 10 the wire 11 on one end 9 of the coil is shown as starting from the upper side of the same and extending outward to the rear and around substantially in a U-shape, to form a handle as at 12, and back forming an arm 13 on the opposite side. This arm portion is provided with a loop 14-, see Fig. 3, which lies against the end 15 of the coil and the same then extends forjaw member extends back and its extremity 15 is turned at a sharp angle inward whereby it may be caused to enter the end 9 of the coil and the opposite handle loop presently described.
The wire 19, which forms the lower handle, starts from the lower side 15 of the coil and extends backward and in a loop to correspond to the other handle, the side 20 being also provided with a loop 21 which is caused to register with the end 9 of the coil, the wire then extends forward and is bent in the form of a jaw 22 to correspond in shape and register with the opposite jaw 16, the side 23 extends back and its extremity 2-41: is bent inward to enter through the loop 14; into the hollow center of the coil 10, as illustrated in Figs. 1, E2 and 3.
It will be noted by this construction that the whole clip is formed of a single piece of wire coiled at its center, the wire at the ends 1 of the coil being bent back into a loop form and around to form handles, the opposite sides of the handles being provided with coils 21 and I l which register with and lie against the opposite ends 9 and 15 of the main body coil 10, then the wire continues on and is bent around to form jaws, the extremity of the wire at the opposite sides of the jaws being turned so as to enter the opposite ends of the coil through the eyes 21 and 11, thereby performing a double function. First these ends serve as a fulcrum pin or pintle on which both the jaws and handles are pivoted to operate, second, the ends of the wires are hidden within the coil which protects them from engaging adjacent articles and also gives to the device a neat and attractive appearance as no projecting ends are visible. Then again, the central or body coil performs a double function, its primary object being to give the necessary spring tension to the action of the jaws, and second, it provides a housing for the ends of the wire.
The device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction and neat and effective in its operation. I have shown but one style of jaw and handle, but I do not wish to be restricted to this particular shape of jaw or handle as the wire which forms either may be bent into any desired shape to accommodate different purposes for which the clip may be adapted, the essential feature of the invention being that the whole is made of a single piece of wire and that the ends of the wire after forming the jaws and handles are inserted into opposite ends of the coil, whether the handles are formed before the aws, or the aws before the handles.
