Description

W. J. LEWIS.
Wagon Hound Coupling Box and Plate. No.v111-,75 5. Patentd Feb. .14, 1871.
fnmvzior:
tltni'tdi field Letters Patent No. 111,755, dated February 14, 1871.
lMPROVEMENTlN WAGON-HOUND COUPLING-BOXES AND PLATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J LEWIS, of Pittsbnrg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Penn-' sylrania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vagon-Hound Coupling-Box and Plate; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereofireferencebeing bad to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank from which my improved wagon-hound coupling-box and plate are made; t
Figure 2 is a lower-face perspective view of the box complete; and
Figure 3, by a plan view of the ends of the bounds, a section of the reach or conplin pole, and ofthe box and plate, illustrates the manner of its use.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
My improvement relatesto the manufacture of the article above named of an improved form and of a cheaper and simpler construction.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use .my improvement I- will proceed to describe its construction and manner of use.
The blanks a are cut or sheared to the desired size from rolled sheet or plate-iron, or they may be rolledin continuous lengths in bars or plates of the desired width, and the successive blanks a cut off, the thick ness of the blanks being uniform throughout,'or the edges-being thinned down or beveled on one or both sides, as shown.
These blanks are then slit along the lines a; x, and the parts a between each two pair of slits are bent or swaged down to the position shown in fig. 2, so as to form sides to the coupling hox, distance between these sides being equal, or about equal, to the breadth of the coupling-pole to be used therein. The depth of the sides a may be varied at pleasure.
' A hole, 0, is punched for the coupling-bolt, and a hole, 0', in each car a", by which to bolt the box and plate to the hounds.
, This device is then used as illustrated in fig. 3, where- 11 represents the coupling-pole, and
(l the bounds.
The pole b passes through between the sides a, (fig. 2,) and the bolt e holds it inplace.
By the bolts a passing through the bolt-holes in the cars a the box and plate are fastened to the hounds d. The ears may be made long enough or large enough for two or 'more bolts to each, if so desired.
The ends of the bounds cl rest against the" outer facesof the sides a', which sides may be as deep as the pole b is thick, and a plain plate be bolted on below; or the sides a maybe only half 'as deep as the pole b is thick, and alike box and plate, inverted, be bolted on below in the same way.
The device described is light, simple in construction, easily made, secures the bounds firmly together, and afi'ords an easy means of adjusting the pole b.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A coupling-box and plate, made from rolled plate or sheet-iron, having sides a and cars a", substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I, the said WILLIAM J. LEWIS, have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM-J. LEWIS.
