To all whom it may con cern Be it known that I, MARTIN Knot, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Jefferson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Paper Holder and Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to a paper holder and cutter, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of this character.

The invention contemplates the provision of a holder capable of accommodating a roll of wrapping paper, or the like, in combination with a unique cutting. means cooperable with the roll of paper.

Another object of the present invention is to provide novel means for deflecting the free end of the paper away from the roll, in order that it may be readily grasped by the clerk or operator, the cutting blade or bar cooperating with the deflecting means to en able the paper drawn therebeyond, to be readily severed.

\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the. description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood.

The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of the holder and cutting device. Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof taken on the line 2-42 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the holder and cutting device. Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmental view of the shaft and cones thereon, parts being shown in section.

The holder for the roll of wrapping paper It, comprises a frame including the uprights or standards 1 connected at their upper ends by a beam or cross bar 2, the standards 1 being provided with open slots 3 in which a shaft 4 is seated. The frame may be of any suitable construction, and the shaft 4:

being seated within the slots 3 may rotate readily, and maybe removed from the frame for the purpose of applying the roll R thereto.

To hold and center the roll R upon the shaft 4, a pair of cones 5 and 6 are mounted upon the shaft 4 adjacent the standards 1, or the end portions of the shaft. The cone is preferably keyed or otherwise rigidly secured upon the shaft 4 and has its periphr cry provided with longitudinal corrugations, while the cone 6 is threadedly engaged upon the shaft in order that it may be unscrewed and removed from the shaft when the shaft is detached from the frame. In this manner, when the shaft is lifted out of the slots 3, the cone (3 may be detached from the shaft, to enable the shaft to be inserted through the roll of paper R, in which event the cone 6 may be replaced. Then, when the cone 6 is threaded inwardlyupon the shaft 4-, the roll R will be centered upon the shaft, inasmuch as the ends of the cones 5 and 6 will enter the endsof the roll R to ,hold the roll against longitudinal movement, and to center the same, whereby the roll will be concentric with the shaft.

As a means for readily actuating the roll It, a hand wheel 7 is secured to one end of the shaft 4, preferably that end adjacent the stationary corrugated cone 5, and to prevent the roll R from rotating in a reverse or retrograde direction, a ratchet wheel 8 is secured upon the shaft 4, intermediate the hand wheel 7 and the adjacent standard 1,while a pawl or dog 9 is pivoted to the said standard 1 and cooperates with the ratchet wheel 8. Thus, the roll R may be rotated properly to unwind or unroll the paper, through the medium of the hand wheel 7 while the pawl or dog 9 cooperatingwith the ratchet wheel 8, will prevent the roll R from being rotated in a reverse or backward direction, as would be objectionable.

An elongated cutter blade or bar 10 is disposed longitudinally across the forward side of the roll R, and has attached thereto upwardly curved arms or hangers 11 which are provided at their upper extremities with hooks 12 engaging loops or hearing portions 13 depending from the beam or cross piece of the frame, to enable the cutter blade 10 to swing to and from the roll, or toward the shaft 4, as the paper is unwound or unrolled. The hooks 12 may be readily engaged to and disengaged from the loops 13, in applyin and removing the cutting device, as will be obvious.

The cutter blade 10 is provided with end plates 14-, beyond the ends of the roll R, and a longitudinally disposed deflecting plate 15 is disposed between the cutter blade 10 and the roll R, the ends of the plate 15 being secured in any suitable manner to the lower edges of the end plates 14 of the blade 10. The inner edge of the deflecting plate 15 is curled back or downwardly to provide a head 16 adapted to rest against the roll of paper R, and the lower or free edge portion of the plate 15 projects slightly beyond and cooperates with the lower cutting or active edge of the blade 10, as clearly seen in Fig. 2. A reinforcing rod 16 is preferably inclosed in the bead 16.

The upper ends of the end members or plates is of the cutter blade 10, are cut away or recessed, as at 17 and a roller 18 has its terminal trunnions 19 seated loosely within the cut away recessed portions 17 The edges of the cut away portions or recesses 17 are inclined, in order that the roller 18 will gravitate against the roll of paper above the deflecting plate.

In use, after the roll of paper has been properly applied to the holder. and the free or outer end of the paper started over the deflecting plate 15 under the roller 18 and cutter 10, the free end of the paper may be readily projected so as to be grasped by the clerk or operator, by turning the hand wheel I slightly, which in unrolling the paper, will cause the free end of the paper to be forced outwardly from under the cutter 10. The clerk or operator may then readily grasp the free end of the paper and draw the same outwardlv to the extent desired. The paper may then be severed in the usual manner, by properly manipulating the free portion of the paper to sever the paper along the active edge of the cutter 10. It is to be noted that the roller 18, which may yield to and from the roll, holds the paper snugly in place, whereby the free end of the paper will be projected when the roll R is turned properly. It is also to be observed that the deflecting plate 15 deflects or directs the free end of the paper outwardly away from the roll B, when the paper is unwound in order that the free end of the paper may be readily grasped by the clerk. This eliminates the difficulty usually incident to grasping the free end of a roll of paper when the free end rests snugly against the roll, as is occasioned by the use of an ordinary or common paper holder and cutter. It is also evident that the deflecting plate 15 and cutter 10 being suspended by the arms or hangers 11, will swing against the side of the roll R, and will swing toward the shaft 1, as the paper is unwound and used. The deflecting plate 15 resting against the roll R, will prevent the roll from spinning, inasmuch as the frictional engagement of the deflecting plate 15 with the roll will hold the roll stationary, but will enable the roll to be readily turned through the medium of the hand wheel 7 or its equivalent.

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings, the salient features and advantages of the present device will be obvious to those versed in the art, without further comment being necessary. It is of course understood that the device may be constructed in various sizes or proportions, and that other alterations may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a device of the character described, a deflecting plate adapted to rest against a roll of paper, a cutter cooperable with the said plate to receive the free end of the paper, one of the said parts having end members to which the other part is attached, the end members having recesses, and a roller disposed between the end members and cooper-able with the deflecting plate, the roller having terminal trunnions loosely engaging the said recesses to permit the roller to move to and from the roll of paper.
