To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED C. BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalispell, in the county of Flathead and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conveyors, (being a division of my copending application, filed January 24, 1914:, Serial No. 81 L309) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in conveyers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with agricultural machines, the present application being a division of my copending application, filed' Jan. 24, 1914, Serial No. 811,209; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the conveying of tubers or the like.
The invention consists in the details of 5 construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational View somewhat diagrammatic in form of a conveyer constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective, illustrating in detail certain features of my invention as herein included; and Fig. 3 is a View similar to 15 Fig. 2 but illustrating in detail additional features.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, I set forth a conveyer somewhat of the character as is employed in connection with the elevating mechanism set forth in my copending application, Serial No. 814,209, filed Jan. 24, 1914, for improvements in agricultural machines, and of which the present application is a division. I make this .selection as this form the better discloses the particular embodiment of my conveyer.
. As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 11 denote sprocket wheels of any ordinary or preferred construction, around which are adapted to be directed the flexible members 2, although only one of such memhers is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that they are positioned in substantial parallelism, as is conventional in devices of this general character. As herein set forth, each of the flexible members 2 comprises a lurality of lungedly connected linked mem ers and 101. The corresponding links 55 of each of the members 2 are adapted to be tied or connected by the rods 56, such rods being in such close proximity one to the other as to efi'ec tually prevent the tubers or other articles carried by the conveyer from falling therebetween, but affording suitable spaces whereby dirt or other matter separated from the tubers or plants during their transit may readily and conveniently fall. While each of these rods 56 may be secured to its coating links in any manner which will operate with facility, I prefer to employ the arrangement set forth in the accompanying drawings, wherein the innermost side bar 3 of each of such links is provided with the laterally directed flat extension 57 terminating in an angular lip 58, such lip being disposed at substantially right angles and provided with a suitable opening or aperture 59 through which an extremity of a rod 56 is adapted to be projected, the sides of such extension 57 being provided with the lips 66 disposed in the same general direction as the lip 58 and adapted to overlie the adjacent end of such rod 56 and serving as an additional means whereby the same may be maintained in substantially fixed assemblage. I also find it of particular advantage to have the intermediate portion 61 of the rod 56 offset relative to the extremities thereof as I have found in practice that 'by this arrangement the best results are to be obtained. I also find it of particular advantage to have the rods of adjacent extensions 57 alternately directed, as is also true of the intermediate portions 61, whereby it will be readily perceived that pockets are produced, which are the better adapted to receive the tubers or other articles to be carried by the conveyor, as is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains.
When the conveyer is adapted to be employed for carrying the lifted tubers from the digging point up to the rake mechanism (not shown), as is particularly set forth in my copending application, hereinbefore referred to, l find it best to have the rods 56 constructed in a manner as is particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, but in constructin the conveyer for the elevator (not shown? as set forth. in such co-pending application, 1 find it of advantage to interpose at predetermined intervals the corres onding links 101, hereinbefore referred to, the inner bar of each of such links being provided with the inwardly directed laterally disposed flat extension 102 affording a convenient means whereby engagement may be had with an extremity of a bucket bar 103, herein shown as substantially tshape in cross section and operating in a manner which is believed to be clearly obvious.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a conveyer con structed in accordance with my invention is oft an extremely simpleand comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well niiasii adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the effectiveness with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without ma terial departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation oi. the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
