5 CATCH-Basin.
Application filed J'une 17, 1912. Serial No. 703,998'.
derstands the requirements for such separa-y tion.
It is well understood that catch basins should be water tight, or substantially so,`
and it is therefore essential that the several sections should be so formed that when assembled they can be rendered water tight without `loss of time and at comparatively little expense.
My invention has in view the provision of watertight joints for the sections, regard being had for simplicity, durability and ,convenience in manipulation. v v
In the draw1ngsF1gure l is a vertical sectional view of my improved catch basin.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary exterior view -of the` trap ksupporting section and a `superposed section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, drawn on line .a2-03 of Fig. l. Fig. l is a plan view of the catch basin cover. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same, drawn on line y-g/ of Fig. 4. Y
Like parts arel identified by the same reference charactersthroughout the several views.
The lower section A of my improved catch basin cistern comprises a cup shaped member, provided at its upper margin with an interior shoulder a' and an exterior outwardly projecting flange a. A cylindrical section C is mounted with its lower margin resting upon the margin a within the flange a', the upper margin of this section being provided with a shoulder a2 and an outwardly extending flange a3, similar respectively to the shoulder a and flange a on the section A. This section C receives another cylindrical section C', which kat its upper end is provided with a shouldera4 andan outwardly projecting flange a5. The annular flanges a, a3 and a5 project outwardly and away from the side wall of the section Specification of Iictters Patent.

above, and form an annular pocket b, V- shape 1n cross sect1on,for the reception of cement, whereby the joints between the sections are lmade 'liquid'tight Thel \/'shape form of the pockets facilitates tamping the cementI in. position 4to velfectively seal the joint.y 4 v y An elbowed member D is provided, near one end, with an external flange ci, and this end of thejmember-D is adapted to fit an aperture in the side wall ofk the memberv C. L
The other leg of themember D extends downwardly within the member C (or member A). .The member Disalso yprovided Vwith ears d', and` thewall of themember C is providedvwith corresponding notches d2.,
f through which the ears df may pass when in registry with such notches, said ears d being, however, adapted to engage the outer surface of the member C when themember D is partially rotated afterthe ears cl have -.passed through said notches (Z2.- ,Thefnotches cl2, are so located that whenthe ears d are in registry therewith, the downwardly eX- tending leg of the memberD will not oc` cupy a vertical position. Therefore, after the ears lhave been passed through the notches from the interior of the catch basin cistern to the exterior thereof, themember D will` be locked in position, vwhen the down'- wardly extending leg isl swung to a vertical position.. Said member D, therefore, tends to swing by gravity to a 'locking position after the flange leg thereof has been passed ythrough the aperture in member C. It will of course be understood that thev sewer or drain pipe will be connected to the projecti ing end of the member D in any suitable manner.
A catch basin cap F is mounted upon the uppersection of the catch basin cistern. It is preferably provided with a 'downwardly projecting flange F adapted to rest upon! the shoulder a* and it is also provided with an outwardly projecting liange F2, adapted to rest upon the upper margin of the flange a5. The cap 7 is provided with the usual aperture, which may be closed by a lid G, said lid being secured in position by lips g, which pass under the margin of the openingin the cap and by a latch g, pivotally connected to the lid. The pivot pin I, which connects the latch g to the lid, is provided with a triangularhead J, at its upper end, said head being `received in a socket K in the lid substantially as shown in Fig. o. The cap F has its under surface beveled at the point Where the latch g enn gages it, whereby, as the latch moves along this beveled surface, the lid is bound firmly in position. lt Will of course be understood that when the latch is swung out of engagement with the surface H, the lid will be released for removal. The triangular head J will, however, prevent the removal of the lid by means of an ordinary Wrench, a special tool being required for adjusting the latch.
l claim l. catch basin having an aperture in one of the side Walls, and having notches in the margins oi? said aperture, in combination with an elboived trap member having one leg adapted to project through said aperture7 in position for connection Witha sewer drain pipe, and provided with a llange J adapted to engage the interior surfaces of the marginal Walls of said aperture and to cover said notches, said member being also provided with outwardly projecting ears adjacent to said flange, adapted to pass through said notches and to engage by rotation upon the exterior Wall of the cistern, when the inner leg of the elbow is in a substantially vertical downwardly extending position.
2. A catch basin having an aperture in one of the side Walls, and having notches in the margins of said aperture, in combination with an elbowed trap member having one leg adapted to tit said aperture and provided with a lange adapted to engage the interior surfaces ci the marginal Walls of said aperture and to cover said notches, said member being also provided with outwardly projecting ears adjacent to said flange, adapted 'to pass through said notches and to engage by rotation upon the exterior Wall of the cis tern, said notches being so located that the lips Will pass through them when the other leg of the elbowed member is in a downwardly inclined position and engage the exterior Wall. when such other leg oli said member is in a substantially vertical downwardly extending position Within the cistern, Whereby said elbowed member may drop by gravity to a locking position, substantially as de scribed.
ln testimony whereof l allix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
