WAVING- TON'GS.
Specification of Letters Patent. P tented No 10, 1914.
Application filed August 28, 1913. Serial'No. 787,140.
To all whom. may concern Belt known that I, LUISE FREY, a citizen of the German Empire, and residing at Munich, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements m'l/Vavmg-Tongs,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to waving-tongs for the hair. I
Appliances of a hyperboloidal form for curling the hair are already known, but
such appliances have been used only as curling pins, the hair being simply wound around them; The so-called Marcel waves cannot however be produced with these appliances.
A primary object of my invention is to provide an appliance for forming in the hair waves of a large variety of forms. To
this end, I divide a hyperboloidal tool, pref-' erably of metal, through its axis into two halves, and I pivotally connect them, preferably by attaching them to two-legs of an ordinary curling-ironi'n such manner that when the tongs are closed the two plane inner faces of the halves can clamp the hair between them. IVhen the tongs are rotated about. the axis of the conoidal tool that'por tion of the hair which is not held clamped is wound around the outer surface of the tool.
This rotatable tool can be heated in any desired manner, and enables the strikingly effective so-called Marcel waves to be produced rapidly and with certainty without One illustrative embodiment of my invention is represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, where1n:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tongs and Fig. 2 a section of the operative tool taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawing, the tongs resemble the well-known simple curling tongs in respect to the formation of the arms 1, 2, thejoint 3, and the handles 4, 5. The mode of fastening the halves of the tool 6, 7 which I employ for waving is also similar to that in these known tongs, 2'. e. the said tool is riveted or otherwise attached to the upper ends of, the arms of the tongs. As may be Copies of this patent may be obtained for seen from Fig. land from the section shown in Fig. 2,'the-two halves 6, 7 form, when closed, a rotatable tool which in this embodiment is shown as an elongated hyperboloid.
A preferable feature of the form employed is that the tool diminishes somewhat in di-',
ameter between the two transverse sections of maximum diameter near its ends. The
inside faces of both halves are rectilinear v planes except for the slight rounding at'the edges. I Y
My tongs can beheated in the usual man ner over a spirit lampor in any other desired manner.
The mode of operation ofthe tongs can" be described in a few words. The two inside faces 8, 9 of the halves 6, 7 respectively serve only for gripping and securely holcling the hair. on the other hand, the hair after being gripped by the tongs, is waved by being wrapped or wound around the rounded outer surfaces of the two halves. My device does not damage the hair in anyway. Owing to the unlimited variety of forms which can be given to the halves 6, 7," any desired form of waves can be produced. According to the dimensions of the halves 6', 7, the waves can without difficulty be either large or small, and each wave can exhibit variations in its height and breadth when a special form is given to the halves 6,
7. Hence with my tongs natural waves and wavy curls of various forms can be obtained, andcan befmade to produce a general effect which best suits the appearance of the person concerned. i
I claim c Navingtongs comprising a hyperboloidal tool bisected through its longitudinal axis to form clamping jaws, the two halves being pivotally connected and the inner faces of said aws being flat with roundededges. 1
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence oftwo witnesses.
