Description
UNITED STATESPATEN'I' OFFICE.
GEORGE CARPENTER TAFI, OF WORCESTER, MASS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND AUGUSTUS BALL DAVIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAND OR EMERY PAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 1] 1,700, dated February 7 1871.
I, GEORGE CARPENTER TAFT, of Worcester, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have inventedan Improved Sand or Emery Paper or Emery-Cloth, of whicl1 tl1e following is a specification:
Nature and Object of the Invention.
My invention consists of sand or emery paper, or emery-cloth, rendered adhesive at the back, as described hereinafter, for ready attachment to a strip of wood or other object, the sand or emery paper thus prepared constituting an article of commerce which will enable artisans to practice economy in the use of these indispensable materials.
General Description.
'ished. In both cases the paper or cloth is rapidly worn away or torn, and the surface removed, owing to the looseness of the wrapping. I afford a remedy for this rapid destruction of the sand or emery paper by coating the back with gum, glue, mucilage, or other equivalent cement, in the same manner as postage and other stamps are treated, the sheets thus coated being sold as articles of commerce, so that a strip cut from a sheet is in a condition for immediate attachment to wood or other material, simply Wetting the gummed back of the strip and applying it to the wood under a slight pressure being all that is necessary to effect the required adhesion.
Sand or emery paper or cloth will last much longer when cemented to a strip of wood or other like object, than when it is wrapped loosely to the same. My invention, therefore, afi'ords the readiest means of effecting the desired attachment, and of exercising economy in the use of the material.
Claim.
Anew article of m anufacture and commerce, consisting of sand or emery paper or emerycloth, rendered adhesive at the back, as set forth. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence oi two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. C. 'lAFT.
