Description

A geuit-esl W @www meeste-w- CHRISTIAN SCHMITZ, opP PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' Letters'Patent No. 875,030, dated December l5, 1868,.
IMPROVED MDE OF SHAVIN G- AND POLISHING- SKINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters-Patent and jrnaklng part of the same.
.To all Awhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SCHMITZ, of the. city to which my invention appertains, to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to ,the accompanying drawings, which are made part vof 4this specication, and in which- Figure I is a side view, and
Figure II, an end View of a machine illustrating my invention. Y
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in the two figures.
Prior to this, invention, the work of shaving skins (after they have been dressed in alum) has been done by hand with a knife, an operation demanding skill,
involving a great deal of time, and frequently entail-A ing loss of material by the cutting of the skin, or the unequal shaving thereof.
My mode of treatment obviatcs the above disadvantages.
My invention consists in the employment of arotating wheel, having a vitreous or grindiug-composi-- tion applied to its periphery.
This wheel is mounted in a'suitable frame, and the skin is h eld in contact with the periphery While the wheel is in motion.
' In the drawingsl A may represent a suitable frame, and B, a wheel, mounted upon a shaft, .0,- having its bearings somewhat below the top, a, ofthe i'rameiA.
1 The .wheel B protrudes through a slot 'in the top, a, as represented.
. operation.
I prefer to make the central portion of the Wheel B of metal, and the external or peripheral part of Wood, as the latter does not injuriously heat the skins in 'Leather or India rubber may be employed as a covering for the periphery of the Wheel B, but a Wooden surface is preferable; y
I apply, .to the periphery of the wheel B, a composition of emery, ground glass, and sandstone, which may be made to adhere by glue or other suitable cement.
, The wheel B isrotated at the desired velocity by a belt applied to the fast pulley D, said belt being shifted to the loose pulley 'E when the motion' ofthe wheel B is to be suspended.
As the wheel Brotates, the skinis held in contact with it above the top or table a. The grinding-surface of the' wheel operates to' shave and polish the skin, and produces a much better -inish than that which is attained by the old process., A little care' will invariably preventinjury .to the leather, and experienceteaches me that my method of treatment effects a saving of about fifty per cent.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is- The mode of shaving and polishing skins, by subjecting them to the vaction of a rotatingwheel; having a grinding-composition applied to itsv periphery, substantially as described. l
To Vthe above, I have signedmy name, this 10th day of July, 1868. i u
CHRISTIAN SCHMITZ. Witnesses:
