FIRE-ESCAPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ,DON A. MCCOY, citizen of the United States, residing at Miller, in the county of Hand" and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in fire escapes. v I
The primary object of the inventionis to provide a fire escape which will be supported at all times on the outside of the build ing and convenient to the windows, the arrangement being such that when not in use the apparatus may be disposed at one side of the windows where itwill not in any way obstruct the window. a v A further object ofthe invention is to provide a structure in which the fire escape may be brought into operative position from any floor of the building.
In the drawings: Figure ing the device arrangedon a building, the pole or bar being indicated in dotted lines as folded against the building. Fig. 2 a sectional view of the mechanism for supporting the pole against movement after the same has been brought to its operative position. Fig. 3 a front elevation of said mechanism.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The invention consists essentially in a pole which is swingingly mounted in suitable supports on the outside wall of a building and adjacent the windows thereof, so that, while it may be normally disposed flat against the wall, it may be readily reached by an occupant of the room and swung outwardly into spaced relation to the wall, thus permitting the occupants of the room to make their escape from the room by sliding down the pole.
In the drawings, 10 designates the pole which may be made of. any suitable material. The pole at its upper end is provided with an arm 11 and at its lower end with an arm 12. A bracket building adjacent the ground line, the bracket receiving an extension 1-1 of the arm 12. This bracket forms a support for the pole which permits the pole to be freely swung, being limited, of course, in its movement by contact with the wall of the build- Speeification of Letters Patent. Application filed September as, 1913. Serial 1%. 791,350.

ing. A similar bracket 15 is arrangedad acent the roof'of the :building, receiving an QXlZBIlSlOIl 16 of the arm 11. Itwillbe noted by this construction that thepole maybe swung on its pivotal supports to dispose the same'adjacent the wall and that a person upon any floor of the, building may con- .veniently reach out of the window and swing the poleon its pivot, whereby the descent to the ground may be made.
A yokel17 is secured'to the bracket 15, the terminals. of the yoke being secured to the building in any suitable manner.
central strutxor brace 18 which is secured to theiwall of the building below the bracket. The arm 11-of the pole rides over the upper The extensions of the edge 19 of the yoke. arms 11 and 12 are ofsuch length that the pole may participate in a slight vertical movement, the center of the yoke and the arm 11 seated in a notch 20-formed in theupper edge 19 of the yoke. A retaining plate is mounted immediately above the yoke 17 and disposed to bear against the arm 11 to maintain it in contact with the yoke, whereby when the arm is seated within the depression, swinging of the same is prevented until the arm is raised.
The plate 21 is provided with a flange 22 by means of which the plate is secured to the wall of the building, and while the plate has been illustrated as the means for supporting the pole against movement, other the wall adjacent f:
The yoke is provided with a thus the pole may be swung to resilient means may be used or the yoke may be provided with a central latch member to receive the arm 11. It will be noted that in practice the occupants of the building may conveniently grasp the pole and swing the same until it is seated in the notch 20 of the yoke, whereby further movement of the pole is prevented. Particular attention is called to the fact that when in use there is no dan er of the pole being raised and thereby The many advantages of a construction" of this character will be clearly apparent as it will be noted that when the device is lower arm 12 and overcoming not in use the same is positioned adjacent the wall of the building where it does not obstruct the windows, the structure being suchas to present a neat appearance. It will also be seen that the device may be easily and economically manufactured and positioned upon buildings without marring the walls or in any way altering the build ing construction.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A fire escape for buildings including a pair of vertically spaced. supporting members, a pole having laterally ofiset terminals Journaled therein, one of said supports including a yoke member having a notch adapted to receive the offset portion of the pole, and yieldable means for holding the ofi'set portion in the notch when the pole is swung outwardly, from the building. I
2. A fire escape for buildings including a pair of vertically spaced supporting memers, a pole having laterally offset terminals journaled therein, one of said supports including a yoke member having a notch adapted to receive the offset portion of the pole, and yieldable means for holding the offset portion in the notch when the pole is swung outwardly, whereby it is spaced from whereby it is spaced the building, said pole being adapted to be swung inwardly toward the building when the oifset portion has been disengaged from the notch, said yieldable means tending to hold the oflset portion against return movement when it is disposed at intermediate points between the notch and the building. 1 3; A fire escape for buildings including a pair of supporting members, a pole having laterally offset extensions the terminals of which are journaled in the supports, one of said supports including a yoke member having a notch adapted to receive an extension of the pole, and a resilient plate normally bearing against the adjacent extension of the pole and acting to hold the extension in the notch of the yoke, whereby the pole may be held against swinging movement when spaced from the building, said plate also tending to hold the extension against return movement toward the notch of the yoke when the pole has been swung to lie at a point intermediate the notch of the yoke and the building.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
