UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE,
LEONE S. SI-IARPS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDIVIN REYNOLDS, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
COMBINED AWNING AND WINDOW-SHADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,240, dated March 11, 1902.
Application filed July 8, 1901. Serial No 67,535. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown thatI, LEONE S. SHARPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Awning and 'Window-Shade; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My inventionrelates to improvements in combined awnings and shades for windows. It has for its object to provide for its convertibility either into an awning or windowshade, to lessen cost of manufacture, to simplify construction, and to promote convenience and facility in using the same.
It consists of the combination and arrange- 2o ment of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by theclaims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is a horizonal section taken above and Viewing the awning or shade-roll, dac. Fig. 3 is a detailed View thereof. Fig. 4 is a detailed cross-section taken onthe line as 00 of Fig. 1.
Latitudeis allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be 3 5 protected.
In carrying out my invention I provide a frame 1, comprising two lateral bars 1, adapted to be pivoted to a window-frame at a suit able point, as shown, and a separate connecting or cross bar l with its tongued or tenoned ends engaging beveled slotted ends of short arms or projections 1, fixed at their outer ends to the inner sides of said lateral bars. Said connecting or cross bar 1 is held to said 5 arms or projections 1 by means of nuts 1, adapted to be screwed upon the beveled ends of said arms, as shown. Between the extreme outer ends of said lateral bars is suitably journaled the shade or awning roll 2, its hollow metal portion being equipped with the shade or awning rolling spring, such as commonly used for that purpose. The other portion of said roll is preferably wood for convenience in fitting the roll to the width of the window-frame. Secured to said roll at one end is a ratchet d, engaged by a pawl or detent 5, slidingly connected to one of said lateral bars to serve as a lock for the shade or awning roll by suitably manipulating or moving said pawl or detent to cause its engaging end to intercept the teeth of said ratchet. To said roll 2 is attached one edge of the shade or awning 6, while to the opposite or upper edge of said shade or awning about centrally thereof is connected at line or cord 7, passed over a pulley 8, suitably hung or suspended above the top edge of the windowframe. Said cord or line is carried down and suitably made fast to a cleat 9, secured to the side of the window-frame or to other conven- 7o ientpoint. Also connected to the cross-loarl of the shade-roll-carrying frame is a second cord or line 10, which may be secured at its opposite end to a suitable fastening device 11, applied to the window-sill, as shown. In using the invention as an awning it is adjusted into the position as indicated in Fig. 1, a free circulation of air being permitted at the same time through the window and into the rooms of the house. In using it as a window-shade the cord or line 7 is slaokened, allowing the automatic rolling up of the awning and the frame 1 to swing downward within the plane of the window-frame, it being suitably held thereto by engagement with fastenings 12, secured to the sides of the window-frame, near its bottom. Said fastenings consist each of a spring plate or arm having one end fixed to the windowframe and its opposite or free end formed with a lateral shoulder or offset laterally beveled or tapered outward to permit the side pieces of the frame 1 as the last-named swings or is moved inward to snap into engagement therewith behind the shoulder thereof, and thus secure said frame in position as against outward movement. Of course the downward movement of said frame carries with it the shade or awning roll. Consequently the awning can then by drawing roo downward upon the cord or line 7 be readily converted into a window-shade, the lower part of the window being shaded and the upper part being exposed for the admission of light and to permit unobstructed ventilation when the window is lowered from the top. By means of the line or rope 10 the awningframe when the device is used as a windowshade can be drawn to just the point or position desired in event it does not initially swing sufficiently inward.
When the device is not in use, or when used as a window-shade, the outer ends of the lateral bars of the shade-roll-carrying frame are designed to rest upon the ,window-sill within the plane of the window-frame.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the character described comprising a pivoted frame carrying a spring-ac- .tuated roll, a shade or awning applied to said roll, a line or cord connected to said shade or awning at its upper end, and to the window frame, being intermediately passed over a roll, means for moving the outer or upper end of said pivoted frame away from the window-frame simultaneously with the unrolling of said curtain or awning, and means for the retention of said roll against reverse movement when the shade or awning is unrolled, substantially as set forth.
2. A device of the character described comprising a pivoted frame carrying a spring-actuated roll, a shade or awning applied to said roll, a line or cord connected to said shade or awning, at its upper end, and to the windowframe, being intermediately passed over a roll, an additional line or cord connected to said frame and adapted to move the outer or upper end of said pivoted frame away from said window-frame simultaneously with the unrolling of said shade, and means for the retention of said roll against reverse movement when the shade or awning is unrolled, substantially as set forth.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pivoted frame carrying a spring-actuated roll, a shade or awning applied to said roll, a line or cord connected to said shade or awning, at its upper end, and to the windowframe, an additional cord or line connected roll, a line or cord connected to said shade at its upper or outer end and to the windowframe, being intermediately passed over a roll, a line connected to said cross-bar and adapted to move said frame away from the wlndow-frame simultaneously with the unrolling of said shade or awning, and means for the retention of said roll against reverse movement when the shade or awning is unrolled, substantially as set forth.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a'pivoted frame carrying a spring-actuated roll, a shade or awning applied to said roll, means for the retention of said shade at its upper or outer end when unrolled, means adapted to move said frame away from the window-frame simultaneously with the unrolling of said shade orawning, and a fastening secured to said window-frame for engagement with, and the retention of, said pivoted frame in its lowered position, within said window-frame, substantially as set forth.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a pivoted frame carrying a spring-actuated roll, a shade or awning applied to said roll, means for the retention of said shade at its upper or outer end when unrolled, means adapted to move said frame away from the window-frame simultaneously with the unrolling of said shade and awning, and a springsnap fastening secured to said window-frame and having a lateral beveled surface adapted to engage said pivoted frame, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' LEONE S. SHARPS.
