Each connector 4 comprisesa section of metal 4 which is cut on parallel lines extending inwardly from its opposite longitudinal edges to form a plate-{l on which the hinge bar 3 restsand a plurality of projecting members (preferably three) indicated'at 4e, 4c fon"one*side thereof and a similarnumber of projecting members,
indicated at 4*, 4 l on thev opposite side of saidplateQ 'As shown, the member et is bent upwardly at substantially right-angles to the plate 4 and in fitting engagement with the adjacent face of the back 3 while the members 4 F are bent over or around the edge 3 of the hinge bar 3 and into engagement with the upper face thereof. As will be understood from the drawings, the members 4 cooperate with the member i to rigidly secure the connector to the adjacent hinge bar 3 The members 4 4 are preferably of such length that their free ends will engage with that portion of the bent over section 3"that lies against the back 3 and hold said bent over section in close contact with the said back. Each of the members 4 e, and 4. are bent or rolled into circular or loop form to provide bearings for the hinge pins 482- As will be clearly seen from the drawings, the bearing loop P. of one connector 4 fits between and alines with the bearing loops 4?, a of the adjoining connector et-to receive a pintle 4P, which extends through said alined loops and. pivotally connects'said connectors together.
The hinge pins 4 of the frontmost connectors 4 are arranged to rest in the bearing blocks 2 which form the frontbearings for the front holder or as many holders as may be operated therewith at any one time. The front holder being supported in the casing by the blocks 2, said holders when in the upright position will rest against the rear wall 1. A cushion 1 may be interposed between the rear wall 1 and the rear holder 3 to overcome stresses incident to the rearward swinging of the holders.
All the connectors 4:, except the one for the rear holder 3, are ofsimilar construction. The hinge pins between the holder 3 permit them to be detached one from another whereby their number can be increased or decreased atwill. Since no bearing loop a is necessary for the connector 4 of the-rear holder 3, the plate thereof is bent over or around the adjacent hinge bar 3*, as shown at 4a in Fig. 2.
, 5 indicates a guide member for guiding the rearmost holder 3 in its up and. down movements, as the holders forward thereof are operated. This member is supported bythe rear wall 1 In the operative position of said guide (see dotted lines in Fig.
1) it may be inclined upwardly and forwardly in order that the upper edgerof said rear holder, and those holders which may be in the upright position, may be moved forwardly and rearwardly during their up and,
down movements. At or near its free end, the guide is preferably provided with a catch or stop 5 with which the rear holder 3. engages when elevated to its highest position. Through the engagement, of the rear holder with the catch 5, said holder will be locked against operation to the horizontal position.
Theguide 5 is preferably pivoted to the rear wall'at 5 whereby it will swing downwardly and rest on the free edges of the holders 3 when the latter are all returned to normal position. In this latter position of the guide 5, its catch 5 will lie in the path of the front holder and thus lock it and all of the holders against operation. However, to release the front holder 3 from the catch5 the guide is pressed upwardly slightly. If now the front holder is swung forwardly and downwardly, such operation ,will elevate the rear holder 3 which in turn will swing the guide upwardly against a stop 5.
The connections 4 between the holders 3 are of a character which tendsto strengthen the hinge bars and backs. The connections also provide long bearings for the pivots, the effect of which is to keep the holders in perfect alinement, thus insuring .ease of operation and durability. Again, the con nections are of simple construction and consist of few parts, the connector plates being arranged for connection with the holders without the use of nails, rivets or screws.
To those skilled in the art of making filing appliance of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention wil suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
What I claim is 1'. In a filing appliance, the combination of a support, a series of holders mounted on said support and each comprising aback having a horizontal hinge bar arranged at right angles thereto along its lower edge, and connections between the holders comprising a series of connectors and pins for pivotally connecting the holders together, each connector comprising a plate on which the adjacent hinge bar rests, a member bent over into engagement with the upper face of the hinge bar and securing the latter to the plate, and bearing loops on the opposite sides of said plate arranged to aline with the bearing loops of the plates of adjoining connectors.
2. A holder for a filing appliance comprising a back formed from sheet metal and bent fiat upon itself against its face to form a doubled section and both layers of said doubled section being bent at right angles to the back to form a hinge bar.
3. The combination of a holder for afiling appliance comprising a back formed from sheet metal and bent fiat upon itself against its face to form a doubled section and both layers of said .doubled section being bent at right angles to the back to form a hinge bar, an angled plate on which the hinge bar of the holder rests, having one member in fitting engagement with the back and another member clamped around and upon the hinge bar, and bearing loops carried by said plate and adapted to aline with loops of the plate of an adjoining holder.
4. In a filing appliance, the combination of a support, a series of holders pivot-ally mounted on said support and arranged to be assembled face to face, each holder comprising a sheet metal back, the said back being folded over on itself to form a doubled section and said doubled section being bent at right angles to the back to form a horizontal hinge bar, and connections between the hinge bars permitting the holders to swing relative to each other.
5. A connector for connecting the holders of a filing appliance together comprising a plate having two members projecting from either longitudinal edge thereof, one member on each side being-bent laterally for engagement with a holder to secure the plate thereto'and the remaining member on each side being formed into a bearingloop and arranged to aline with a bearing loop of an adjoining connector to receive a pintle.
6. A connector for connecting the holders of a filing appliance together, comprising a plate having a plurality of members projecting from its opposite longitudinal edges, each alternate member along either edge being arranged to engage the adjacent holder for securing the platethereto and the remaining members being rolled or formed into bearing loops and arranged to 'aline with the bearing loops of an adjoining connector to receive a pintle.
7. In a filingappliance, the combination ing loops on the opposite sides of said plate 3 arranged to aline with the bearing loops of the plates of adjoining connectors.
8. In a filing appliance, the combination of a support, a series of holders'mounted on said support and each comprising a sheet metal back, the said back being bent at right angles adjacentits lower edge to forma hinge bar, and pivotal connections between the holders including connectors, one for each of said holders, the said connectors comjectin from its opposite longitudinal sides, themiddle member on one side of the plate being bent upwardly into engagement with the back and the opposite end members on the other side of the plate being bent over and upon the hinge bar and cooperating with the said middlemember to secure the plate thereto, and theremainingprojeoting members being formed into bearing loops and alining with the bea j o-ining connectors.
9. In a filing appliance, the combination ring loops of adprising a plate having three members pro of a support, a seriesof holders mounted on said support and each comprising a sheet metal back, the said back being folded over on itself to form a doubled section and said doubled section being bent at right angles to the back on a line parallel to the folded nections between the holders including connectors, one for each of said holders, the said connectors comprising a plate having three edge to form a hinge, bar, and pivotal cone I members projecting from its'oppositelongitudinal sides, the middle member on one side of the plate being bent upwardly into engagement with the back and the opposite ends members on the other side of the plate being bent over and upon the hinge bar and cooperating with the said middle member to secure the plate thereto, and the remain- I ing projecting members being formed into hearing loops and alining with the bearing loops of adjoining connectors.
