IH I NORRIS PETERS C0., FHTL LlTh WSHINGTUN- D. C,
" "Umain sra-rias ROBERT ivi. STUART, 'or L aliarse.
To (MZ w71 om 'it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT M. STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, *have invented a new and'useful Whistle, of which the i015 lowing is a specification; p n, o This invention relates to a whistle intend-` ed for use particularly by policemen and traflic oicers, and the main object of the invention is to provide a whistle which is adapted to be blown either by applying to the mouth of the user or by means of a bulb or other device. n f l Other objects of the invention will appeal hereinafter.
The 4accompanying. `drawings illustrate embodiments of my invention, and referring thereto:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the whistl applied to a bulb, showing in dotted lines the position to which the whistle is turned for blowing by the mouth. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe whistle and its mounting. Fig. 3 is a section on line V:i3-oe3, inxFig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of another Aform of blowing device for the whistle, the whistle being shown thereon in elevation.y
Referring to Figs. 1 to 8, the whistle indicated at 1 may be of any usual or suitable form, being provided with an inlet or mouth piece2 and an outlet opening 3, and with suitable means for producing sound by the passage of air iromthe inlet or mouthpiece to the outlet opening. Said whistle is mounted by pivots Ll in a frame consisting of side plates 5 extending :from a tubular body 6, said tubular body having-at one end suitablemeans such as a screw threaded portion 7 forL engagementv with a blowing device hereinafter described.v Said tubular body 6 is further provided with means for making an air tight joint with the mouth piece of the whistle when the latter is turned to a certain position shown in Fig. 3, saidmeans consisting, for example, of a rubber plugS inserted in the tubular member 6 and having a bore or passage 9 which registerswith the inlet or mouth piece 2 of the whistle. A spring 10 secured at one end of one ofthe side plates 5 is formed at its other end with a pin 11 extending through a perforation` 12 in said side plate and adapted to engage in either one of two depressions or recesses PA TA @FFI-CE;

Pafnted Non 10,` '1914i application varea November 25,v ma .sei-iai No. 802,922.,4 j o A llinionle sidefoi' the whistlel so as to retain saidwhistle either in thefposition shown in Fig. El with its inlet ormouth piece 2 registering with, ,the passage 9, or in `position shown in dottedline in Fig. 1, in ywhich the. whistleis' extended at right angles to the supporting.fra-me, so as to present its inlet orunouth piece 1n convenient position for blowing by the mouth of the user. The whistle 1 may lbe provided with the usual ring 15, which in this case serves as convenient means for turning the whistle on its pivo'ted support as well as for carrying the vdevice as a whole. 1 l
Any suitable means may be provided for forcing air through the passage 9 to blow' .f tight j oint therewith.
In using this form of the invention the oliicer may use the whistle manually, by turning the whistleto the position shown in Figs. 2 andB and pressing the bulb 16 ywhenever he desiresto operate the whistle,
the bulb 16 serving in that case as a handle as well as an operating device for the whistle, or, if 'he sofdesires, he may at any time use the whistle in the ordinary manner by swinging the whistle as shown in dotted lines lin Fig. 1 and blowing in theinlet or mouth piece 2,"` which is then exposed in convenient position for such operation.
Instead of the rubber bulb any other suit* able blowinor means maybe used, for example, a cylinder such as indicated at 20 in Fig. 4, said cylinder being slidably mounted on a piston 21 carried by a post 22 resting on a stirrup` 23, and said cylinder being provided with an operating grip or handle 24 which Lis bored as shown at 25, to establish communication between the interior of the cylinder and the inlet portion 7 of the tubular member 6 of the whistle. In using hold the whistle in position withoutusing his hands therefor, so that both hands Aare left `free for other purposes, for'example,;fin
directing` traffic. Vhen he desires tooper-` late the whistle he grasps the handle 24 and pushes it downcausing a blast of air to be.
and frame having a passage communicatingV with said blowing device, and a whistle pivotally mounted in said frame and provided with a mouth piece which is adapted in one position of the whistle to register with said passage and movable to another position in which the mouth Apiece is eX- posed. Y s
2. The combinationv of a blowing device and frame having a passage communicating with said blowing device, and a whistle pivotally mounted in said frame and provided with a mouth piece which is adapted Y in one position of the whistle to register with said passage and movable to another Vposition in which the mouth piece is exposed, i and means on said frame and whistle for retaining the whistle in either of said positions.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 17th day of November, 1913.
ROBERT M. STUART.
