To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LENA MCDONALD, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Chadbourn, in the county of Columbus and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Naste-Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appcrtains to a waste receptacle for railway passenger coaches, waiting rooms, and for other pur poses, and aims to provide a novel and im:

proved receptacle of that nature, which is particularly adapted for the reception of sanitary drinking paper cups after they have beenused. r i

At the present day, it is quite common, for

passenger coaches, equipped with coolers and sanitary paper drinking cups, to have no. or inadequate means for receiving the cups after they lnve been used, and as a consequence, the floor below the cooler, generally becomes litter 'l with used cups,

which is not only unsightly, and renders the floor wet and slippery, but is also unsanita ry, inasmuch as when the cups become dry, due to the heated air within the car, the d1sease germs will float in the heated air, thus 'avoidingthe prevent on of spread ofcontagious diseases, which the sanitary cups are primarily provided l or.

It is therefore the object of the present 1nvention to provide awaste receptacle, which is peculiarly adapted for receiving used sanitary drinking cups whereby they may be housed on confined within the receptacle, to avoid the objections above noted, and whereby the receptacle may be readily emptied iii-om time to time.

prevent the egress of the disease germs from i a the receptacle when. the cups or matter within the receptacle become dry or heated.

It is also within the spirit of the present invention to provide a device of the character specified, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as being simple, convenient, p 'actical andei'licient in its use.

This slide 5 is provided with an opening 6 adjoinim its inner or rear end, the forward end of the opening 6 being inclined, as at 7, to form a chute. The slide 5 is also equipped with a knob or handle 8 at its forward or outer end for conveniencing the manipulation of the slide, and the slide is furtherprovided with slots or grooves 9 in its side edges with which pins or stops 10 engage, said pins or stops being carried by the ends of the flanges or lips 4c, to limit the movement of the slide out of and into the receptacle. The slide is normally retracted by means of a spring 11 connecting the inner or rear end of the slide and the back wall of the receptacle, although this spring is not en: tirely essential. The front wall of the receptacle is further provided with a cleanout opening 12 and a door 13 for the cleanout opening is hinged to the lower edge of the said opening, directly adjoining the bottom 14: of the receptacle. The door13 is provided with'the sector-shaped wings 15 movable along the interior of the sides of the receptacle, and having arcuate slots 16 which are engaged by pins or stops 17 carriedby the sides of the receptacle, to limit the outward movement of the door 13, as seen in F ig. 2.

The door 13 is preferably provided with an inner latch 18 having an outer knob or handle 19, whereby the latch may be engaged upon the interior of the front wall of the receptacle, when the door 13 is closed, to lock the door 13 in closed position, under ordinary conditions.

The bottom 14 of the receptacle is preferably raised and slopes from its edges to the center portion, a drain pipe 20 being connected to the central portion of the bottom 14 and extending downwardly through the bottom or floor of the passenger coach, waiting room or the like, for permitting the receptacle to be drained, should the cups deposited therein contain water.

In use, the door 13 ordinarily closes the clean-out opening 12, and the slide 5 is normally retracted or closed, preferably through the medium of the retractile spring 11. Thus, as soon as the slide is released, the

' spring will return the slide to initial or closed position, without it being necessary for the slide to be manually pushed inward. To deposit the cups within the receptacle, it is merely necessary for the user to pull or draw the slide 5 outward, and to insert the cup through the opening 6 upon the inclined or chute portion 7 thereof, in which event the cup will drop from the exterior through the slot and into the receptacle. In any event, the cup will drop into the receptacle when the slide is opened. or when the slide is closed. It is to be noted that when the slide is pulled inwardly by the spring 11, the opening 6 will be brought completely within the receptacle, and that the means for limiting the outward movement of the slide will prevent the lower portion of the inclined end 7 of the opensequently, the egress of disease germs will be prevented.

The receptacle may be emptied from time to time, by swinging the door 13 open, as seen in Fig. 3, which enables the porter or attendant to readily slide the cups from the bottom of the receptacle over the door 13, and into a suitable waste receptacle. The door 13 may then be closed, to again put the receptacle in condition for use.

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, the several advantages and capabilities of the present invention will be obvious without further comment, it being apparent that the objects aimed at have been carried, out satisfactorily, and that the present construction is susceptible of changes or alterations in its details, within the scope of the appended claim,

without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A waste receptacle having one wall provided with a depositopening, a slide slidable inwardly and outwardly through the said deposit opening, the slide having an opening adjoining itsinner end, the outer end of the slide opening being inclined, means for yieldingly pulling the slide inwardly to bring the opening thereof within the receptacle, and means for limiting the outward movement of the slide to prevent the lower portion of the said inclined end of the slide opening from being moved completely out of the deposit opening.
