ADJUSTABLE roam: FOB aouT NG-Miionmnsf To all whom it may concern. a j a Be it known that I, AnoLrH WVILLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lklinneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Adjust able Forms for Routing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of; the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the cart to which it appertains to make anduse the same. u
My invention hasifor its object to provide a universally adjustable form or frame for holding work while it is subject to a routing tool; and to such ends,"generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in thegclaims.
Hitherto, it has been the custom to build up a form for each articleto berouted out, because the form must correspond to the size of the piece of work to be routed and must correspond tothe shape of'the panel or groove to be routed out.
My invention provides a form which,
within certain limits, isuniv'ersally adjustable to the various sizes and shapesrof the different articles orpleces of work that are to be routed out. I 1 i j a The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several 1 Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan .view with some parts broken away, showing the improved form; Fig, 2iis a section taken approximately on the line 12 00 on Fig. 1 and showing also a routing tool in operative position on the form; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 02 m on Fig.1. I I
The form is made 'upchiefly of two longitudinally extended laterally spaced mem bers, each of which comprises a base rail 1, and two laterally spaced metal strips 2 and 8. The said strips 2 and 3 are rigidly secured to interposed spacing blocks 4, but they are adjustable in respect to the base rails 1. As shown, this adjustment is accomplished by slotted brackets 5 secured to the strips 2 and adjustably secured to said base rails 1 by nut-equipped bolts or screws 6. The inner strips 2, as will hereinafter appear, serve as guide rails, and their ends project and are adjustably connected by Specificationof Letters Patent.
threaded rods 7 nuts S. j
Secured on, the rails 2 are bearing lugs 9, through whichnvork screw threaded stems and coiiperating clamping 10 of vertically adjustable form, supporting p r Patented News, 1914. A ncation filed m 20, 19 14; a m. 851,932. Y
The numeral lalindicates'a board or other piece of work which is formed with a routed outpanel 14 i j The numeral 15 indicates the bell-shaped bodyof an electric routing machine of well 1 known construction, and which is provided with a routing tool 16 having a loose guide 14; may be varied by adjustments of the brackets 5, in respect to the clamping bolts 6.
The combined, spacing and guiding blocks 1.3 are simply'blocks of wood which are out according to the width of the panel that is to be routed out of the piece of work.
f When the form is ap plied to thework, the base rails l are adjusted against'the sides ofthe said work and the entire form is supported onithe rest blocks 11- which rest di rectly on the upper face of'the work. The
of the routing machine. 1
The vertically, adjustable ,rest' blocks 11 will rest upon the outer edge of the upper face of the work, and the depth of the cut ofthe routing tool may be varied by vertical adjustments of the said blocks 11. It will thus be seenthat this form is adj ustable, not only to the size of the exterior of a piece of work, but also, as to the depth of the out and the outline of the panel to be routed out. Also, it is evident that this formtmay be very quickly adjusted to various sizes and shapes of work.-
The wooden blocks 13 are adjustable but vwork, itself, will besupportdon the bed securely held to the guide rails 2, preferably collar or roller 17 that is adapted to run in j engagement with the rails 2 and innerends ofthe blocks 13. r a As isevident, the width of the form may j beadjusted by movements of the nuts 8 on the spacing rods/7, while the length of the fwork; holding portion of theyform may be 1 varied by adjustments of the spacing blocks 13 between the rails 2.- The projection of 4 ,the guide rails 2 over the edges of the work thereof, while the guide rails. 2 and spacing blocks 13 are moved overthe upper surface by long wood screws 18, which are passed through longitudinally spaced perforations l9 and screwed into the said blocks. The said perforations 19 are extended through the rails 2 and 3 and through the intermediate spacing blocks 4, and are located at different points longitudinally of the rails, so that the spacing blocks 13 may be secured in any desired adjustment. When the screws 18 are applied to the said rails and blocks, the rails are spaced apart by the blocks, so that, in some instances, the screw rods 7 might be dispensed with.
As is evident, the width of the piece of work that will be held in the form is limited only by the length of the tie bolts 7, and it will, of course, be understood that tie bolts of any desired length may be employed.
By the use of this adjustable form, a great saving of time, labor and material required, is accomplished.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A form of the kind described comprising longitudinal guides, means for adjustably spacing said guides, and spacing and guiding blocks clamped between said longitudinal guides.
2. In an adjustable form of the kind described, the combination with laterally spaced base rails, of guide rails adjustably secured on top of and projecting laterally from the inner edges of said base rails, and
I combined spacing and guiding blocks interposed between said guide rails.
3. A form of the kind described comprising longitudinal guides, means for adjustably spacing said guides, spacing and guiding blocks clamped between said longitudinal guides, and rest blocks engageable with the work and adjustable to raise and lower said guide rails in respect to the work.
LIn an adjustable form of the kind described, the combination with laterally spaced base rails, of guide rails adjustably secured on top of and projecting laterally from the inner edges of said base rails, combined spacing and guiding blocks interposed between said guide rails, bearing lugs on said guide rails, and rest blocks having threaded stems adjustably engageable with said lugs.
5. In an adjustable form of the kind de- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
scribed, the combination with laterally spaced base rails, of guide rails adjustably secured on top of and projecting laterally from the inner edges of said base rails, combined spacing and guiding blocks interposed between said guide rails, and threaded spacing bolts connecting the ends of said guide rails for lateral adjustments.
6. Ina form of the kind described, the combination with base rails, of guide rails provided with slotted brackets, bolts applied to said brackets and base rails adjust ably securing said guide and base rails for lateral adjustments, said guide rails having bearing lugs, rest blocks having end stems engageable with said lugs, nut-equipped threaded bolts adjustably connecting the ends of said guide rails in lateral adjustments, and combined spacing and guiding blocks clamped between said guide rails 7. In an adjustable form of the kind described, the combination with laterally spaced base rails, of guide rails adjustably secured on said base rails, spacing blocks interposed between said guide rails, and means directly and positively connecting said guiderails and spacing blocks.
8. In an adjustable form of the kind described, the combination with laterally spaced base rails, of guide rails adjustably secured on said base rails, spacing blocks interposed between said guide rails, and screws passed through perforations in said guide railsand screwed into said spacing blocks.
9. In an adjustable form of the kind described, the combination with laterally spaced'hase rails, of guide rails adjustably secured on said base rails, spacing blocks interposed between said guide rails, screws passed through perforations'in said guide rails and'serewedinto said spacing blocks. and rest blocks adjustably secured to said rails and'adjustable to support said guide rails indifierent elevations above the work.
'In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
