LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
v Patented Nov; 3, 1914.
Application filed April 15, 1912. Serial No. 690,691.
To all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, BOYD T. BEARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. i 1
This invention relates to a combination lock which may be operated in the usual manner and may also be thrown by a person having a master key so that in applying the-locks to lockers or difi'erentapartments in a'building, the individuals using them are the only ones to whom the separate combinations are known while the owner or caretaker of the building is enabled to operate any of them without regard to the special setting of the lock.
The especial feature of the invention is the disposition of the lock so that the changing of the combination by the ordinary user does not prevent the person having the master key from throwing the look if desired. l
, The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set. forth and more barticularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, the view illustrates a longitudinal section of a lock with a posi tively operated bolt. I
The lockcon'iprises a rectangular casing 11 in which a latch bar 12 is positively moved in either direction through the proper operation of any standard type of combination mechanism, as indicated at 13. The latch bar has an extension 20 and connected to said extension is a spring actuated arm l l inthe path of a stop arm 15 which prevents the withdrawal of the latch bar, unless the combination is properly set. The stop arm 15 is normally held in place on a pivot pin 16 by a spring 17, and the stop is so disposed that when, a key is inserted in the casing and rotated into Copies of this patent may be obtained for engagement with a stud 19 on the latch bar extension for shifting the latter, the key bit raises therstop arm 15 out of the path of motion of the spring actuated arm l t and permits the withdrawal of the latch by the key regardless of the condition of the combination. a I
As a. result of this arrangement a lock is obtained which may be "set to be opened in the usual manner by a person holding the combination or at the same time it may be thrown by a person having a master key. This makes the device particularly useful for lockersor apartments of public buildings whereby the owner or caretaker has access to the lockers or apartments without the necessity of knowing the combinations of the various locks. r
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not wish toli'mit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
.Vhat I claim is I In a lock, the combination with a casing containing a combination mechanism and a latch bar adapted to be moved thereby, of an extension carried by said bar, a stud carried by said extension, amember carried by said extension. and adapted to be operated by said combination mechanismwhen said mechanism is properly set, and a spring pressed stop arm arranged in said casing in the path of said member and adapted to be elevated out of the path of said member by a key insertedin saidcasing to engage the stud of said extension to shift the latch bar independently of mechanism.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
