To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FnANoIs W. GIBSON and CLARENCE S. MAnnnN, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at West Roxbury, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, and Cambridge, county of M ddlesex, State of Massachusetts, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Display-Covers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates todisplay boxes for goods and particularly to a display box cover which will permit the effective display of advertising matter indicative of the nature of the goods and which wlll at the same time protect the goods against damage or deterioration. The retail cigar trade offers a field in whichthe need of such a device has been long felt, and in the further discussion of our invention we will describe and illustrate our display cover as part1cularly designed for this purpose, although it is of course understood that the rack is capable of use in any other capacity where it would serve the purposes intended. In the display of cigars it is essential that they shall be protected against the drying effect of the air and against contamination by dust, germs and similar deleterious matter. But it is equally as essential that the clgars shall be readily accessible when making a sale and that .their oftentimes artistic labels and bands shall be exposed in plain view to in dicate the particular brand. In fact, this latter requirement is now law, and therefore the need of an adequate display rack is all the more imperative. This combination of attractive label and band moreover, presents a pleasing appearance to the eye and its value as a selling medium is well recognized by dealers. The usual method of display employed at the present time is to place the open boxes of cigars inside and on the tops of showcases with their covers thrown back to expose the banded cigars and at the same time to display the label on the inner face of the box cover at the most This method, where the cigars are displayed on top of the show cases, is an extremely unsanitary one and is open to the further objection that the cigars Specification of Letters Patent.

are exposed to the drying effect of the air and soon depreciate in quality.

To the end therefore of producing a display box and cover which will overcome these objections and which will be capable of production at a low figure, we have devised our present invention in which we fit a transparent cover over the hinged cover of a cigar box in position to rest on the box edges and protect the cigars and at the same time to display the label on the inner face of said cover. Thetransparent cover is so disposed with respect to the hinged cover as to hold the hinged cover erect while utilizing the cover hinge in its own lifting movement.

The construction and use of our display box cover will be more fully discussed in the specification which follows, and in the drawings which form a part of that specification we have shown an illustrated embodiment which has been found well adapted for the purposes intended and the requirements of the trade.

Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are employed to indicate corresponding parts and in these drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View of a display boxand cover in accordance with our invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a partial bottom view of the open frame which fits over thebox cover and carries a transparent plate to protect the contents of the box, Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the locking strips for the transparent plate. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are end, plan and front views, respectively of a slightly modified construction, and Figs. 8 and 9 are detail sections on the lines 88 and 99, respectively of F ig. 6.

The display box and cover thus illustrated comprises a container 1 having a hinged cover 2. This container, as herein shown and discussed is the ordinary cigar box, and in use the cover is thrown back to expose the contents and to display the label on its inner face To protect the cigars against depreciation and at the same time to expose their bands and the label on the box cover, we fit a covering frame 3 over the box cover in position to lie across the delivery opening of the box. This frame is preferably made of sheet metal in the shape and proportions of the cigar box, to rest flat on the walls thereof-and project slightly over the edges to provide grasping portions for the hand in raising it when making a sale. The frame is, therefore, of open rectangular shape and provides a display opening at preferably coextensive with the box to permit the cigars to be seen without raising. the frame.

To exclude air and germs from the cigars the display opening is covered by a transparent plate 5 held to the frame by three locking strips 6. These lockingstrips are of the shape shown in Fig. 4; and are detachably held at their outerendsto the frame by the clamping flanges 7 thereof, which flanges areturned in along all four margins of the frame and pressed down upon the locking strips onthree sides. These flanges 7 thus provide rolled edges which will not cut the fingers whenraising the cover. The plate 5, is therefore detach-ably held to the frame 3 on three sides thereof, preferably the front edge and both ends,v there being no looking strip for the upper or rear edge of the plate.

In lieu of a locking strip for the rear edge of the plate we provide locking lips 8 adapted to engage over said edge near each end. These lips are formed as pro- "ectin ton nesand are turned in from the metal ofthe rear edge of said frame and then bentdown over the rear edge of the.

Said lips have for their function to prevent displacement of the plate, except when it is desired to withdraw it, in which event it is removed by first turning back the lips out of its path of travel and then displacing it byv a sliding movement transversely of the box. The plate in this movement .is guided by the inner or free ends of the locking strips- These ends are formed as edge receiving clamps by turning the metal thereof upwardly at 9 in a plane at right angles to the body portion thereof and inwardly at 10 in a plane at right angles to the, portion 9 parallel to. but in a higher plane than said body portion. The sockets thus provided form guides in which the plate is slid by a transverse-movement until its rear edge passes the locking lips, whereupon said lips are turned down to clamp the plate in position.

The plate and frame are fitted upon the cover of the cigar box by a slot 11 formed in the rear wall thereof. This slot is formed by striking up the metal fromv opposite edges to provide a centralflange 12 along the rear edge and side flanges 13 along the front edge. Against this flange 12 the'upper face of the box cover finds bearing, the lower face of said cover bearing against the flanges 13. Said flanges thus constitute bearings and supports for the box cover,

a and have for their function the holding of the cover in a position slightly inclined from the vertical to most eflectively display the label, borne upon the inner face thereof. The slot and flanges permit the transparent cover to utilize the hinges of the box cover in its'own lifting movement, thereby avoiding the use of a second set of hinges.

The method of assembling our improved display device is as follows: The frame 3 is struck out from the blank in a shape suitable for the cigar box to which it is to be adapted. The display opening 4 and the longitudinal slot 11 having been struck out therefrom, the flanges 12 and 13 are turned up. The locking strips 6, which have already been shaped in the fashion described, are next laid upon the frame near the bottom and end walls thereof, and the marginal flanges 7 are then turned down to clamp the outer edges of said strips. This/clamps the looking strips to the frame. The transparent plate 5 is next inserted into the guides provided by the free ends of'said strips by a movement transversely of. the box. The locking lips 8 are now turned in and pressed down upon therear edge, of said plate to holdit in position to cover the display opening. The frame thus assembled. is then placed in covering position by inserting the slot 11. over the box cover which has been thrown back and sliding said frame therealong until it abuts against the rear wall of the cigar box. In this position. the upper side of thebox cover finds bearing against the central flange l2 and the lower side against the end flanges 13. This maintains the cover in .a substantially vertical position and insures theproper display of the label thereof. At the, same time the frame 3 is resting upon the walls of the box with its transparent plate covering the display opening. This insures proper display of the cigars without subjecting them to outside exposure, the frame being lifted and by reason ofits bearing upon the box cover swinging said cover backwardly and downwardly, when it is desired to remove a cigar.

In Figs. 5 to 9 inclusive, we have shown a slightly modified construction of frame. In this embodiment the frame is slit angularly at two corners and bent downwardly to form front and end flanges 14: which. provide advertising spaces of greater area than in the preferred embodiment. The frame near its rear edge has a longitudinal slot 15 similar to the slot 11 except that instead of three bearing flanges, we have provided one bearing flangel6 substantially co-extensive with the slot. Against this flange the box cover finds bearing. Additional bearings may be provided for the cover by turning up a.

tongue 17 from the rear edge of the frame near each end of the slot as shown in Fig. 6. This construction of frame just described calls for a slightly different arrangement of locking strip 19, for the transparent plate 20. Instead of turning back the margins of the frame to provide clamping flanges adapted to be pressed down on the strips, as in the preferred embodiment, said margins are turned downwardly and inwardly, as shown in Fig. 9 and then downwardly and outwardly to provide the advertising areas 14. Into the recess thus formed by said downward and inward turns the main portion of the locking strip is inserted, the free end thereof being bent as shown to receive and clamp the glass late. The rear edge of the frame has no 100 ing strip, the metal at each end of the slot being turned downwardly and inwardly to provide locking lips 18 (see Fig. 8) which receive and clamp the glass. The upper face of the frame may bear any suitable advertisement, as for example the brand and price of the cigars ori display, while the plate, being transparent, permits the cigars to be seen without exposing them to the air. The frame is made detachable so that it may be removed from the box when the contents thereof have been sold and transferred to a fresh box.

Various other modifications in the construction and form of our invention may obviously be made if within the limits of the appended claims.

What we therefore, claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A display cover for acontainer having a hinged lid said display cover comprising a frame having a transparently covered display opening and a slot formed in its rear edge to receive said hinged lid and bearing flanges struck up from the edges of said slot to support said container lid in substantially erect osition.

2; A disp ay cover for a container having a hinged lid, said display cover comprising a frame having a transparently covered dis-- play opening and a slot formed near one edge to receive said hinged lid, and a bearing formed adjacent the slot to support said hinged lid in substantially erect position.
